Seen a post where some rod builders apply finish at speeds up to 200 rpms. I am currently using a 36 rpm motor and its too slow. But the only motors I have found are Flexcoat and the cost for the 120 rpm is $531 and the 200 rpm is over $600. For you rod builders that use the faster motor, where did you get your motor? I need a source. There has got to be a better price out there.

32. Guide Help
I am building a 9' plugging rod for jetty use. I will be targeting jacks, spanish, reds, and the occasional king. I have a magged ABU 7500 CT and I currently have minima XT4G guides on the rod. A XT4G(20), XT4G(12), and XF4XG (8)s as running guides. It is a fast action, med-heavy rod. During stress testing I ended up with 10 guides and a top and still had places where the line barely touched

The jaws stay tight and I have the motor running in the direction that would tighten the chuck. It seems like as the rubber wheels on the rod stands turn they have a screw like effect and it pulls the rod out of the chuck. If the wheel on the rod stands are up it doesn't happen.

I replaced the chuck that came with it with the aluminum chuck.

Whenever I use the dryer portion of my wrapper and engage the wheel on the rod stand it screws my rod out of the chuck. If I don't engage the wheels its OK. Right now I currently use a couple of heavy duty rubber bands to secure the handle to the chuck works but a pain in the%$^@. I sometimes need to engage the wheels on the rod stand for rods not perfectly straight. And I always level and al

I have on several occasions felt a tug and kind of expected to find a guide missing. That's why I'm looking for a larger guide, but haven't seen anything that matches well. I don't want it to be that obvious that I have two different types of guides on the rod.

I recently built a 13' pompano spinning rod using Fuji's KW guides and the KT single footed guides (size 10) for my running guides. I took it to Corpus Christie on a fishing trip and it easily cast a 100+ yards. But I often heard my shock leader (50 lb test) knot hitting my running guides. I used several different leader knots and it got better but I think I need to put larger running guides o

You think like me. That is exactly how I ended up turning that solid piece of burl cork I glued on last. No butt plugs and no tape under my cork. Turned out great.

39. Turning Cork
Probably a stupid question but I am going to ask anyways. I read about rod builders gluing up their handles on the blank and then turning the blank to shape the cork. Well to day I did that and it turned out great. Now I want to glue a piece of dark burl cork on the end of the handle (this will act as my butt) and turn that down to match the rest of the cork. My stupid question is - how do I s

The Flexcoat High Build Resin that I have been using is turning a cloudy white and getting thick. I searched the forum but nothing came up. I have not left the top off or accidentally got hardner mixed in it so what could be wrong. Does this stuff have a shelf life?

Ed, I have a spool of Gudebrod Black (NCP) size C. A little bit has been used not much. If interested email me an address I'll send it to you. You can send me any color in Gudebrod size D (NCP) in trade.

I have read Mr. Kirkman's article plenty of times and in paragraph four it states by now I should have an good idea where the choker guide goes. I don't have any idea - so what I am missing?

For spinning rods there is the NGC and/or the 27x method. Is there something out there for a bait casting rod? I am building a 10' bait casting rod and I am going to use an ABU 7500CT with 20lb test fireline. I understand the static load method of guide placement but I don't know where I should place my butt guide or the rest of the reduction train or the size of the reduction train.

48. Wrapping Guides
I know that wrap lengths vary from guide to guide and that each guide wrap is directly proportionate to the size of the guide and this proportion is maintained by making the wrap in front of the guide the same on all guides.
Is there a rule of thumb in determining the length of the wrap in front of the guide? How does the professional rod builder determine the length of the wrap in front of

Need to wrap a ferrule (tip-over-butt) that has a guide very close to the female end. I read number 14 of the FAQs. That would work out well. I also read what Dale Clemens wrote that a 1/4 wrap would suffice but not look good. So most wrap the entire ferrule to length of the male penetration plus 1/4 inch or to the point where the diameter reduces to the normal taper of the blank.

The bait is called fish bites. One fish bite strip may only be a couple of grams. There is no additional weight to speak of. Thanks all, I'll figure it out.

I am getting things together to build a couple of surf spinning rods to target pompano. I'm going light a possible and I need these two rods to be casting machines. The rods are Rainshadow SUR1505F 12'6" 2-6oz. The spinning reels are Stradic 6000FG. Both are spooled with 14lb test mono with a 30lb mono shock leader joined with an Albright knot. I'll be slinging 5ozs of lead.

I am looking for an alternative to color protector. The ones I've been using all seem to dull the color. I did a few a test wraps and used some Mod Podge gloss on some nylon thread and it looked good. Haven't put finish on yet. Has anyone ever used Mod Podge before? If so what was the result?
