If you're looking for something just to square up and remove the radius from the corners of your tenons a skew gouge works well.

Cork grips are easy to remove with common tools that all of us have. Since you haven't wrapped the rod yet, why not just get another grip and replace it?

You can pick up a digital postal scale at Wal-Mart for about $10. I've checked mine over and over again with a 500 grain standard and the things' dead nuts accurate.

I'd warm it up a little bit with a hair dryer, wipe off what I could with a coffee filter, and hit it with a fresh coat. What do you have to lose at this point?

i have a pair of 4ft. T5 fluorescent fixtures mounted over my wrapping bench. Provides an excellent amount of light over the entire area without being overly bright.

A friend of mine and fellow rod builder took a trip to the Olympic Penninsula a few weeks ago. Packed all 3 of his rods in a bazooka tube, and checked them in with Delta Airlines. Unpacked his rods at the hotel and discovered Delta had smashed his bazooka tube, and all his rods were crushed right ahead of the for-grip. PVC might not look cool compared to a bazooka tube, but I'll bet his rods wou

I'm doing a strip/rebuild on an old fiberglass Fenwick steelhead rod. The grips, seat, guides and excess epoxy are all off, and it could still use some TLC. I'm thinking about wet sanding it and refinishing it with permagloss. I've used rod varnish in the past, but I really don't want that much build-up if I can avoid it. Am I on the right track? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks, Jay.

I've been asked to build a pair of grips using a few checkerboard trim rings. It's not usually my type of thing, so I really hate to spend the cash on cork cutting jigs and the little saw. Does anyone know of a source for pre-fabbed checkerboard rings? I've seen them in the past, but can't find them now.

I'm sure it's doable. It's not optimal, but a heat lamp or even a simple drop light will provide enough consistent heat to finish one guide. And before you tell me it's too cold to wrap a guide, it's -2* C here, right now, and I've worked in my unheated barn most of the morning.

Buzz, if I was building a new rod for jigging walleyes, what would you recommend? I l fish smaller jigs, 6-8lb. mono, I like around 32", and they're just average eater sized fish.

Why not just coat your grip with tru-oil? Works excellent on natural cork and burl, doesn't feel cold in the winter.

I'm not trying to start a debate, but there's a few highly respected builders out there that absolutely refuse to use recoils but they will use flexlites.
