I served on the USCGC Mackinaw, but didn't build any rods while I was ab

I'm 45 years old. I was 14 when I built my first rod. It was an ice-rod, built on a broken fiberglass car antenna. The guides were take-offs from a broken Zebco spin-caster, the handle was a custom job cut out from a scrap piece of 1x4 pine, and the thread was metallic gold sewing thread. I don't remember what was used for finish, but I know it wasn't flex-coat. It was one of my prized posession

125. Re: fair price
i always figure $10 for the odds and ends, including a rubber winding check and standard hook keeper. I'm quite certain I break even at that price.

126. Re: Centerpin rod
NO WAY I'd recommend leaving the rings off your sliding ring grip. Centerpins are horribly expensive, and can be destroyed beyond repair if dropped on a hard surface. Use the rings, and then you tape it to the handle, no chance it's coming off when you least expect it. In My Opinion anyways. If you haven't located some guide spacing, I can probably give you a starting point.

127. Re: Removing Epoxy
I do strip/re-build work on occasion, and it's not that difficult at all. Simply heat the finish up with a hair dryer and scrape it off with your thumb nails. It takes a little effort, but nothing you can't handle.

128. Re: guide spacing
This is the spacing I like on a 13' 4-piece spey/float conversion. This arrangement will most likely work out quite well on your XST also. This will place a guide right on each female ferrule, which is my preference, but certainly not a necessity.

Mark, Herb's a rock solid guy, I'd take him up on that offer.

I'm a mitten state guy too. I built several technique specific redfish rods for some guys on the east coast last year on Batson XST's in the 8-12 and 10-17 lb. ratings. They've been very well received.

No, they don't. 3cc's of a given hardener weighs "x" grains. 3cc's of a given resin resin weighs"x" grains.

I eliminated the syringes altogether. I weigh the mixture on a small digital scale. I've found 3cc's of hardener and 3cc's of resin weigh the same amount, repeatedly. It's a quick process, there's no sticky mess, and it's drop-dead accurate.

Quite a few float rods are built with a running guide wrapped on instead of a tip-top. I've built several that way, and have yet to see an issue.

My own personal rods get 7's. I'd rather deal with the ice than the tip weight. That being said, 8's are the best choice for winter use.

It's going to be built into a centerpin rod for stream trout. The action is negotiable, mostly whatever I can find that fits into the budget, yet packs down short enough to fit in the saddle bags of a full dresser Harley.

142. 5-piece fly blank
I'm looking for some suggestions. I need a 9' 5-piece fly rod blank in a 5wt. Any ideas?

If you have the space for it, why not pick up awood lathe first and try it? Lots of used ones for sale, and fairly easy to get your money back out of it later if it doesn't work out.

Nothing wrong with having an ugly duckling or two in your rod rack, I'm sure most of us have a few. A few of them "ugly ducklings" taught me how to remove guides and strip off old finish. It's also how you learn to replace grips and seats.

If your looking for a pre-made grip, Mudhole has a 20" tennessee handle available. The 1.00" graphite slip rings are what customers typically request.

Excellent blank. Are you building a spinning, centerpin, or baitcasting rod? Batson has guide spacing charts for all three configurations, nothing set in stone, but they are a good starting point. No matter what brand or style guide you choose, don't go smaller than 7's, same with the tip. As much as I hate the look of them, Pac-Bay Minima's make sense for sub-zero weather.

I work in a room I partitioned off in my pole barn. The temperature and humidity are very hard for me to regulate, and I had the same results with TM lite, never could correct it. For whatever reason, Pro-Kote gives me better results.

9 out of 10 rods I buid gets Alconite's. I just don't think anything compares for the coin. I've used Gunsmoke SIC's a few times and weighed them on my own scale. They are actually a bit lighter than the Alconites, and man do they look sexy on a well built rod.
