Glue runner?

Thanks, Terry. I've got one set of guides positioned. I had a tough time cleaning residue off the blank on a couple guides that had too much adhesive on/near them. Q-tip, alcohol and a lot of rubbing took care of it. Having the adhesive bleed through the wraps is my biggest concern. Will use less glue on the next two. Good call on just gluing one foot on the stripper. The rest of the gui

Besides being less/non repositionable, is there a downside to using tip top adhesive (hot glue stick) for guide placement? I am building identical fly rods with/for three young kids (mine) this Thanksgiving weekend. I built the same four piece blank for myself and will be using identical guide placement. My stick of flexcoat guide adhesive went missing and I'm not wanting to go back to mas

After a business trip to Cabo I fished north of Cabo on the Sea of Cortez a year ago, stayed here: Day one (of two) we fished from a boat with 8wts (ours) and 10wts (guide's) for what felt like a day fishing at the hatchery. Nothing sporting about throwing minnows out to attract fish to your fly. No reason to use a fly rod, really. Hated it. Next day a friend and I took our 8 weights to a

I wanted to finish my 13' spey rod in my 12' long shop. Only one rod turner but did not want to wait overnight to do top half and bottom half. Had a rod lathe and some rubber bands and, surprisingly, it worked (all night): Happy fishing. Craig

Mud Hole, good call. They've been great to deal with in the past. Glad to know they'll go the extra mile on something like this. I had a broken tip two piece Lamiglas 5wt with the same finish that I cut down the butt section. I was a bit aggressive with my first cut and had barely 2" of overlap at the first joint which may have been okay but the taper was more gradual than my 4 piece and

I have a very important rod to repair. It's my Lamiglas XMG905 4pc 5wt travel rod. The first section up from the butt was crushed in the middle. Lamiglas scoured their shop and does not have the replacement section to fix it. It's a natural carbon matte finish. Where would you start to get a close match to the length, action, look of what used to be my favorite rod? What are my chances of suc

Thanks, Russ. That's a good deal. Three or four piece would be preferred to pack smaller as we do a lot of camping. Anyone had any experience with blanks from ? Craig

I have three kids, 11, 9 and 9, who each want to build their own fly rod. They have been fly fishing with me since each was five years old, nymphs dragged behind our canoe, mainly, occasional nymphing in creeks and small rivers. Next is teaching them to cast dries. A 6' 6" to 7' 6" 4wt rod is what I want them to learn to cast on. Any favorite blanks that you've built/cast that will

I have not burnished my wraps. I may have missed this step in Tom's book but I don't know where to start on burnishing. What tool do you use and how do you use it?

Great tip, Jim, on getting the threads wet. Will do that tonight. Hoping to avoid the CP. Fred, the blotchyness appears to be more than just the blank showing through. I heated the epoxy with a lighter to get bubbles out and suspect that I may have been overly aggressive with the flame. Could this have caused the epoxy to soak into the threads in some areas more than others?

Darkening a bit is fine. Being splotchy is not. Will be prepared to strip and start over necessary.

I've read through Tom Kirkman's Rod Building Guide (twice). Great foundation for getting started. I'm on my third rod in as many months. The first two, while perfectly fishable, have disappointing wrap finishes. I'm almost done with a beautiful (pre-epoxy) 13' 7wt spey rod and need advice before I botch this one, too. Rod #1 I used a single coat of color preserver, wraps got splotchy once

Thanks for the reminder. I've not been taking my tools as seriously as I will tomorrow. Craig
