I expect I'll be making bowls and shawl pins eventually, too, Terry. I just got a call back. It's a 12" span: With no indication in the listing, it looks bigger than that. I'll keep searching.

I'm looking at the birch bark article in rodmaker volume 9 issue 2. I expect to use random bark rings, cork rings and other thin materials built up to a length I can turn down and shape into a grip. I expect that center boring will be limited to small lengths of wood to use as end caps.

Looking at a used lathe on Craigslist that has about a 20 inch span I think. Hope to go see it/pick it up this evening. Thanks for the input. Craig

I'm not ready to say never on a surf rod but it's unlikely. I will be making a centre-pinning rod soon. 90% of my projects will be single hand fly rods and light spinning rods. I can always take my current lathe (with rollers) out of the finish shop and do work on the occasional long grip. Looking for an excuse to buy a precision wood lathe that I can make non rod related items but will s

Looking to move my dust generating work out of my wrapping and finishing area. Would prefer a new lathe with a live center instead of rollers for this. I'd like to do other small woodworking on this machine. How far between centers would you want in a lathe for your rod grip turning needs? Craig

Thanks, Roger. Great links. Four or five hands sounds about right. How many tries to get the hole centered in the pvc cap? Should I use anything over the butt to keep the spinning neoprene safe from hardware and/or cork safe from the neoprene? Is it possible to get enough tension to get a tight wrap or is this a finish tool only? Craig

Jake at Lamiglas gave three of us from my r&d department a tour of the factory. The piece that intrigued me the most was the lathes they use for wrapping and finish. It appeared that they had a soft collet and stretchy fitting that went over the butt of the rod. The fitting, once on the rod butt pushed in place inside the collet. That was interesting but more so for mass production than f

They did offer me a discount on any new rod but they do not have any 4 piece fly rods. As I said to Josh when he got me this replacement section from his collection of odds and ends, this rod has taught me more about casting than I learned in my previous 30+ years of fly fishing. It's ultra fast and I can't let go of the hope that I'll get to fish with it again one day soon. Since this ha

Does permagloss run too thin to expect a smooth 0.3mm build even with multiple coats? I'll likely look for another blank to cut a section out of and start afresh on replacing the section I broke before cutting into the upper section.

Yes, it is a whole new section that came painted, I stripped and trimmed, was pleased that the finish matched, the rod length had not changed and that the section was within 1/4" of the other sections in length so I proceeded with plugging the tip, installing stripper guides and ferrule wrap, only to discover this misfitting ferrule after the finish had cured. I want this for fishing, not

The original section penetrates 1/2" deeper than the new section and is 0.3mm larger in diameter at it's tip. If, at 1/2" cut off of the female ferrule, I'm still looking at 0.3mm too small of a diameter, I am not eager to start trimming the female ferrule. I will be visiting Woodland on Monday, will get this in front of Kendra and team to see what they suggest.

Thanks, Tom. I'll start with 1/8 inch and see if the fit improves.

I've looked at mot of the previous posts that I found here regarding this problem. The first, most permanent fix that was suggested is trimming the female ferrule. The female ferrule has a stressed look around the opening. Almost like the blank is split under the wrap, which is unusually long, possibly covering up the split. With just about 2" of overlap and a possible split in the femal

I broke my favorite fly rod, a Lamiglas xmg 905, last summer. Last August Lamiglas returned the broken rod to me and said they did not have the blank section to repair it. I took a trip up to Woodland a couple weeks ago and Josh dug through odds and ends for 20 minutes and came up with a section that just needed trimming and stripping to match the rod. You walked me through the stripping, turned

That sounds like a great project. A challenge I see is keeping the part of the rod you're working on over the treadle. If you built a longer treadle you'd still have to start the rotation by hand which would be hard to do from three+ feet away. I like the idea of a human powered wrapper. A treadle that drives a flywheel hooked up to a stepless gear box via a clutch mechanism might be wort

More options. Thanks, Randy, Phil, Roger and David. The section I got today from Lamiglas was painted, my rod is raw matte graphite. Citri-strip and a credit card still the best solution for safely getting paint off? How long should I let the stripper sit before I start scraping? To even up the finish, assuming that's needed, after it's scraped off, a light "polish" with 400 grit

Thanks for the options. If I use rod bond, how do I measure the amount, get it into the hole knowing how much is in the male end and keep it off the outside of the blank when curing? Craig

I went up to the Lamiglas factory and Josh dug through a bunch of blank sections and found one that matches my broken section for my xmg 905 4 piece travel fly rod. The section needs a plug on the small end. I did a few searches and didn't come up with anything that helped. What do you use to close up the small end of a section that's not the tip? how do you get it to stay put? Thanks

A year ago I built my first rod in preparation for a trip to Baja. I stressed about the finish and the fact that my bright green and gold wraps turned almost black, unevenness, etc. Almost stripped it and started over. I'm so glad I didn't. If I had I would not have had it done in time for those 12 roosterfish (albeit, small), skipjack tuna, and jacks that I caught from the beach. More importantl

All three rods are done. On the first I used a considerable amount of cement. The second two, an almost imperceptible coat on the guide feet leaving the guides repositionable after wrapping on the second two rods. I did not need to adjust them so I'm not sure if the guide would have been as easily adjustable as it would have been had I used another mounting method. The first rod, with very se

Lamiglas is a great company. I expect that they will at least send me the part, if not offer a repair. If not, with all of your advice, I think I'll be able to manage this. Craig

From the odds and ends I picked up from a retiring rod builder I have dozens of loose rings so I expect I can find a matching ring for this reel seat. Another rod builder suggested an ice-cold wet towel on the threads while I heat the cap to keep the heat localized. If Lamiglas won't offer to replace it, I will give heat and padded pliers a shot. Thank you for the input. Craig

I have a Lamiglas, factory built fly rod. The uplocking ring is damaged and needs to be replaced. Is there a safe way to remove the butt cap? Thanks for your input. Craig
