Sulky Metallics are lightyears ahead of Gudebrod and all others. They lay flatter and are not as suseptible to gapping or shredding as the rest of the pack. I find their colors much more appealing as well. Great product. But avoid the tensioners that put pressure on the thread. A simple post with some washers, a spring and wing nut will make a handy tension device. Mike Barkley's use of a large s

You might get a range of suggestions as the importance of effective spine (or spline) is a subject open to interpretation. I have taken the advice of many skilled builders and simply build on the straitest plane. It has proven to yield excellent results for me. I would hope that you find you have done the same even if by accident. Nevertheless, it is good to realize that spine is not a "thin

You might try gluing up cork sheets larger than the width needed and then turn it down. That ought to be a lot less expensive than buying a cork block. Dave

Italo, Thank you for this wonderful web site. Even though I don't speak Italian it is easy to understand what is going on. The videos are very well done. The 2007 Show looks like it was an amazing event. The snowstorm caused my flight to be cancelled so I missed seeing you at the Expo in February. Hopefully I'll see you at the next one. Ciao, David

My late Father owned and operated coffee shops in Manhattan for over fifty years. All four of his sons served some time working with him at some point of our growing up. The last restaurant he owned was across the street from the World Trade Center and was open 24 hours. I made the salads; Chicken, Tuna and Egg Salad in quantities that stagger the imagination. The first thing you learn is tha

The term "custom rod" is obviously wide open to interpretation. I would never intend to limit anyone's right to apply whatever criteria they choose to meet their standards for what a "custom rod" is for them. There is, however, good reason to appreciate the many degrees of effort, expertise, attention to detail, workmanship and the input of the client that may, or may not, be

Shawn, I strongly recommend building spin cast rods in a spiral configuration. Most spin cast reels are heavy and they require effort to keep them upright. The force applied by a fighting fish will provide increased leverage over a standard configuration.. and this will not only reduce the effort needed to keep the reel upright but provide greater power over the fish. The Bumper Wrap is simple a

After painting a fiberglass blank I tested a small area with Permagloss and it immediately dissolved the paint. So I applied a spray coat of Krylon Crystal Clear to create a solid barrier. The following day I applied a new coat of Permagloss and it went on smoothly without any damage to the paint job. Did two 20# - 40# boat rods this way. The added weight of the Krylon coat does not present

If hand mixing is too dificult and the epoxy is too thick for the ball bearing to blend simply plunge a popsicle stick or a flat coffee stirrer vertically into the epoxy and hold it steady as the cup turns. Another option is strips cut from those phony credit cards that come in the mail. Use the flat side to scrape the walls and fold the mixture together. Make sure the epoxy is blending thoroughl

Here's the link to the Tournament results: Today, Saturday, is the finish... and Italo's Team "YCSS-IMD" is tied for 3rd Place. Only one Marlin back from the leader with a 345 point gap. His team is definitely in contention; just needs a super finish to take the crown. Go Italo!!! Dave

Hey Ellis, I met Alice and Ray Brock and Arlo Guthrie when they were the Houseparents for a Youth Hostel on Martha's Vineyard back when Arlo was 16.Later when the Alice's Restaurant movie was being made in Stockbridge and Lenox, MA I was an extra and can be seen a couple of scenes. Your reference to that song brings back a bunch of memories. Dave Gilberg

The general rule of thumb for surf spinning rods is to fit the reel where it can be comfortably gripped when the rod butt is nestled in the pit of the arm when held out to the side. For conventional surf reels a bit of extra distance works better as the hand does not need to reach ahead of the reel foot as with spinning reels. I'd be interested to see if this logic is supported in the upcomin

I'm left handed. In addition I am somewhat ambidextrous; eg. I hit a baseball from the right handed stance. In general I find reeling with my left hand to be the most comfortable position. It's just a more natural action than with my right hand and I can turn the handle much faster. For fly fishing I like casting with my right hand and winding with my left. Same with surf casting. This makes a le

This reminds me of the great car builder Ettore Bugatti. His cantankerous behavior seemed to infect his outstanding automobiles. There is a story about how a Saudi Sheik wanted to have a Bugatti Royale built for him.. the grandest motor car of the time. Ettore insisted that the Sheik pay him a visit before he would consider the commission. The day after this visit took place Bugatti refused to do

In the years I have known Andy I have been impressed with both the products he has developed and marketed through Lamar Fishing and the integrity he has made his hallmark. I cannot think of another dealer in any business that I have met who makes himself so available and is so forthcoming with information regarding the products he sells. On top of that Andy and Emily are two of the nicest people

I painted two boat rods (one pink, one blue) with Ace spray enamel. The next day I put on a protective coat of Krylon Crystal Clear. The following day I applied Permagloss and it worked great. The Clear Coat acted as a secure barrier to protect the enamel from the Permagloss.. I had tried it without the Clear Coat and the Permagloss made a mess of the enamel. The added weight of all this had litt
