You could also go out as far as you want with the wrap and place the first guide on top of the wrap.

Tom, Can't even put into words how astounding the gift is. the procedure is only about 10 min. long and bam new eyes. The ultimate gift is being given back the ability to see and enjoy rod building again. I guess it falls into that catagory of not knowing what you had until you lose it.

Hello to all. I have been gone from rod building for a while due to some sight problems which were significant and caused me to stop building for a while. The worst part was I basicly withdrew from all aspects for a while. I had Cateracs removed from both eyes and new lenses implanted and the outcome was incredible/ 20/20 in both eyes and I can see colors again with great clarity. I look for

Mick, one little thing if you do use acetone: Make sure you use Nitrile gloves, I know slaughtered the spelling of this word but no doubt someone will correct this for me. If you use the regular latex glove you will find the acetone will eat right through them. Just a little point so you don't have to learn it on your own. Per some of the above posts, I agree with Tom, use the least potent chem

I could use some help here and maybe the "machine shop made metal reamer" is the answer if this old guy can figure out where to get them. I use the rat tailed files on some of my grips as as work with a lot of wood but I can't find any for grips much larger than fly rod grips, the files are to small in diameter for anything larger, any suggestions???? Thanks.

Thomas, looks like you are getting enough help per the above posts and you won't do much better then Mr. Wilson, I suggest you take full advantage of his skill. I will offer up my email also if you happen to have any questions. Good luck and you will find it quite enjoyable to begin manufacturing more of your own components.

I would recommend Stevens site to any turner. I have purchased a fair number of reel seat and handle blanks. All come as advertised, and the character of the wood is beautiful. If you turn and don't or haven't ordered from his site your missing out big time.

Thanks for the input. Like I said, I was just checking this out and it surprised me that in 20 yrs of building I had not heard of them. I certainly had/have my suspicions and figured I have this great resource of builders to draw on (I not blowing smoke at you) and figured there had to be some input on this. I long ago learned I can build a quality rod from a top notch company without having t

Do any of you have knowledge of these fly rods/blanks. I just had never heard of them and did a little checking. I talked to the owner, David Ahn. Says he is a Physics Scientist and developed these rods and has been selling them for 14 years. Obviously, he is very high on them and extols their positive aspects. The concept sounds good, but I admit I know nothing about them and have no other in

Hi David, I have refurbished and or rebuilt a lot of fly rods. It has been my experience that cleaning off old epoxy and applying epoxy over sections with old epoxy and areas where it is gone is more problematic then stripping the guides and re-wrapping them. I have found too many inconsistencies with the condition of the thread and the look once it has been coated with epoxy, especially if th

I now have a box a friend built me. But for a long time I used a box that cabinets came in. I asked and was surprised that a big box store would hold one for me. Anyway, I added about two feet to it to accommodate one piece rods. I sliced it along the top front edge, instant top. I cut a couple of round holes in one end and the handle stuck out just enough to insert into the dryer chuck. I

I turn and sell wood handles and reel seats. All are bored and have urethane inserts to reduce weight. I have a good selecttion of stabilized wood and some natural woods in stock. However, I work out of state three weeks at a time and am at work until July 8th. If I can be of help just e-mail me.

I'm with you Casey!! I have used abalone and I am sure the layout by setting it up with masking tape as shown by Mud Hole workss but I must be doing something wrong as I too come up short. I have been putting it on the blank and over wrapping it and tapping it in place and carefully cutting along the overwrap. It is working OK. I also use some snakeskin and don't like to waste that due to the

I have been using it for years, mainly because there are some great colors and a great number of colors. As has been mentioned before Medeira thread has a lubricant to help those who use it for it's original purpose and the lubricant helps the needle pass through the cloth etc. I use CP every time and put at least two coats. If I want a translucent effect I use a rod building thread. For me i

Karry, Thanks so much for the wonderful information. As soon as my shop is finished I will do that thing we often don't have time for-Build myself some rods-. I printed this page out and again thank you for your time and the sharing of this information which will save me from the usual trial and error of moveing to new waters and figuring it out from scratch. Can't say enough about all the inf

I have been absent for a while. We moved from Montana to Sequim Washington so my wife and I could help her folks some. I am getting a shop added to the house we bought and will finally have an area I can set up and post a sign "Cigar Country". Any builders from that area, I would appriciate your input as to the couple of salt water rods I should build for my self. I lived in Alaska f

I will be the first to admit I was nervous when I wrote my post and tryed to be careful as to what I said. I only did this as I learned from those who proceded me and some recently, one who gave a young man a power wrapper. The single thing I most admire about the rod building community is their willingness to give and help others. I have received plenty of help on this site and others. That is

Hey, Tom let's up the stakes for this gentelman. I have seen others help others who are new or moving into a new level of building. Life has been good to me and mine for the most part. The price is now $50 bucks, that should off set the shipping to a large degree, unless your in Montana, then you can take me fishing. Doug

Just a thought for you since this is your first lathe. I have a Turncrafter VS with the bed extention. I used it for 1 1/2 years. I wanted a bigger lathe to use for some bigger projects. All works well and is a good entry level lathe. If you were anywhere near me it's yours for $100 bucks. It's in my shed taking up room. Problem is I'm sure you live nowhere near me. I don't remember what I pa

Thanks Fred. I wrapped by hand for the past 18 or so years and it seemed fine. Like so many things we have to be careful not to become creatures of habit to the point we don't see what is in front of us. I am really enjoying using the power wsrapper and like most things; the more one does it the easier it gets. The foot pedal on this unit works very well and allows good speed control so I thou

Thanks to all. I read all the above and got on the lathe last night after work. I'm at a natural gas camp for three weeks at a time so I only have a couple of hours in me after I finish my 12 hr. shift. I haul my lathe back and forth from home and have everything else in duplicate that I leave here. guess my brain was just tired. As I worked last night I realized I can go up or down the blank
