Hi guys,
Here's a little bit of history about my current project.
I am in the process of rebuilding a St. Croix Avid Inshore for catching snook, reds, and tarpon down here in St. Florida. The rod I am rebuilding was originally a 8 foot long Medium Heavy 14-30lb 1/2-2oz but the top foot broke. I had a few other similar broken rods sitting around so I decided to used the top portion of anoth

Tom,
I sent you a private email yesterday and it went unanswered so I have decided to post the same question here on this forum as I see that you frequently visit this site. Well, I recently subscribed to Rodmaker magazine (Order #202120) and I was wondering when should I be expecting my first issue. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Pedro

I decided not to purchase the pre made handles. I will either purchase them with a smaller inside diameter or make my own. Thank you all.

Ok, so provided the cork quality is good. Are there any downfalls from shimming the corks to fit. Thanks

Here's a more specifc question. I found a great deal on 10 high quality portoguese labeled cork handles measuring 12 inches in length for only $3.70 a piece but the only problem is that they have all been reammed to about 5/8" on the butt side portion. Should I shim these to fit the rods or should I just let this awesome deal pass by and pay retail for the correct size. Any downfalls from do

Thank you for your suggestion. In what volume can I find that article. I do not mind reading the article but I honestly do not think it would make sense for me to start making my own. I'll rather purchase them instead of spending the required time, effort, and a lot of money on equipment, plus I do not think I could ever make a foregrip winding check like the one in the pictures, not in a million

Quick question, would a cork handle with an ID opening of 5/8" .625mm work on a blank with a butt OD of .500-550mm or would be too lose of a fit. Thanks

Mike,
Thank you for your quick reply but I am actually looking for winding checks that would fit flush on top of a Fuji KDPS Quick-Lock Reel Seat Locking Nut, plus I really love the look of the CA Fore Grip Winding Check with internal tube but I haven't been able to find a close substitute. If you know of a place where I could find a similar tube or another cool looking winding check then I mi

Hi, I can not seem to find the following items on their new website so I was just wondering if any of you know could point me in the right direction or tell me where else (maybe in the states) I could find the CA Fore Grip Winding Check, KDPS 16 Winding Check, and CA Double Colour Butt Cap as seen on this site . These look very similar or exactly like the ones used by our fellow Brazilian custom

Correct, that's exactly how they do it as St. Croix. Transparent look.

Jeremy,
I would personally go with an Orange looking color that matches or blends into the blank like the one used from the factory and then add a few Silver metallic thread for the trim wraps. I know it is a little bit simplistic but I like it. Also, I do not think you need to go with those heavy duty (heavy weight) guides on this rod, especially on the top portion of the rod where you needed

Hi, I have noticed that many rodbuilders recommend using a size or two larger ceramic guide compared to a wire one like Recoil. I too was under the impression that ceramic guides had a smaller ID than the wire guides so I took the liberty to measure the inside diameter of some of the Fuji and REC guides I had at hand and I was dumbfounded by the results. Apparently, Fuji SiC guides have a larger

Eugene,
Thank you for your advice and complements on the rod. I will give your guide spacing a shot while applying the Static Distribution Placement.
Thanks,

Tom,
Would you use double or single foot and Fuji Titanium Sic or REC for the 16-12 (or 10) guides. Do you see a problem if I go with REC guides for the rest of running guides. Also, what would be the best knot to tie that will run through the smaller running guides you recommended. I appreciate it.
Thanks,
Pedro

Mike,
I went ahead and read the Static Distribution Placement article you recommended and it looks like it is definitely the way to go. I have a couple of questions though, can you give me an idea on where to place the blank for the test, and do I need to use the same guides I'll be using for the final build or could I use any size guides I have available at the time.
Also, you're right abo

Hi, I just purchased a St. Croix Legend Elite SCV blank model 5FF968.4. This is going to be my first custom fly rod build and I have a few questions to ask you guys.
First, I have heard that this is a great blank and very easy to cast with, what do you guys think. Also, I know that the blank is not originally rated for saltwater fishing plus the fact that it is on the large size, do you guys t

Hi, you guys. I was offered an awesome deal on a St. Croix Legend Elite SCV blank model 5FF968.4 so I went ahead and purchased it. Now, that I have an 8wt I'll probably get the rainshadow RX8+ on a 10wt for light tarpon fishing. Thanks

Ken,
I am not really sure I will be fly casting from a kayak. Even though my kayak does have a pair of stabilizers for added security I would hate to fall on the water and lose all of my fishing equipment :-(
Also, I do not own a boat so I would must probably be casting either from shore or maybe on a friend's boat if I get invited.
I am sure I would be happier with the 8wt too but I

Ok, but what about line wt. I can get the RX8+ 4 piece blank on 7, 9 or 10 wt. I know that most people recommend a size 8 for overall performance when fishing inshore but unfortunately I can only get it as a 5 piece blank. What do you guys think. Thanks

Hi, I am in the process of building my first custom fly rod for inshore saltwater fishing and I found these recently discontinued Batson Rainshadow RX7+ and RX8+ blanks at unbeatable prices $100-$140. Well, I have never used a fly rod before but I am willing to learn so I am not sure if I should go with the more moderate action RX7+ or the faster action RX8+ rod blank. I normally use high end ba
