Peter,
You are better off using a power drill. Keeps your wrapper clean and prevent overloading the motor.

I have a Crafty's Cutter on backorder from Mudhole and they e-mailed me that they will be going out the first week of Jan. In the past, I have used a Dremer tool to carve out the hood of the reel seat. Works good, but takes time and patience.

If the issue is money, which it typically is, get the best possible blank. The guides and other components can always be changed out, but the blank is always the same.

It depends. If you use size A for the underwrap and D for the overwrap, you should not have an issue. However, I have used size A for both and I tend to get small gaps in the overwrap because the thread seems to fall in between the valleys of the underwrap. In this case, I apply a very thin coat of lite build epoxy to bridge the valleys and provide a flat surface for the overwrap. Hope this h

Drew,
I totally agree. I use a spreadsheet prepared by another rod builder. I also do a static test and 9 times out of 10, I keep the spacing provided by the spreadsheet.
Thanks for sharing,

I have a 21 foot pole with no reel or guides. I use it to push myself along the flats on my boat. ;)

Great people to work with. Very responsive and always willing to help out, even when I need a dimension on a guide, blank or reel seat.

Do a test section on a scrap blank and apply CP on half. Apply the epoxy and see which one you like the most. I did this test and decided to go with the CP. As Bill stated, is is a briter color.

Jeremy,
One of the main reasons to flip the stripper guide is to minimize the line slapping the frame of the guide as it comes off of the reel. Personally do not like it and I do not see the add benefit to flipping the guide. However, these are custom rods and each builder likes their own style. I am sure that different builders have different reasons, but this is the one I have heard the m

Empty cigar boxes are great. They also look nice and fun to empty.

I have never seen it done like that. I would insert and epoxy an internal piece of blank or a rod that connects the two pieces together under the reel seat. This way you are not relying on the just the reel seat for support.

Lorenzo, the secret is multiple thin coats. No need to sand down the bumps. Keep the coats thin and you will see a huge improvements in leveling and bubbles.
Hope this helps,

I saw a picture of a grip done with a pistol grip. The rod builder drilled through it and used it as the top section of a split grip. This gives you the feel of the pistol grip without the balance issue. I believe the picture was on this forum.

Try running three threads on top. The Red and two sacrifical threads. This will space out the red a bit further and reduce the intensity.
Hope this helps,

Fred,
Mount empty spools of PB thread onto a scrap blank and mount it on the power wrapper. Then re-spool the empty PB spool with the thread from the larger Madeira spools. Then you can use the thread carrier from the PB wrapper.
Hope this helps,

52. Re: Rod set
I have a few old rods leaning against the wall in my shop that have been there for years. After reading this post, I went to check them and none of them are bent. If they do set, it must take longer than 2-3 years.

54. Question on FET
Hi,
I have a question on the FET that someone might be able to clarify. When I purchase components from a supplier, I pay for the FET at that moment because I do not have the exemption. When I build a rod for a customer, I need to charge and pay the FET again on the same parts because the rod is a new item that did not previously exist. This part I understand. However, if a client wants to p

It seems that you are mixing the Flexcoat 5 minute epoxy. Read the label on the bottles to make sure.

56. Re: Weight?
Are you comparing apples to apples? Compare the two rods with the reels installed. A rod can feel heavier than it actually is if it is not balanced properly. The added stress on the wrist can seem like the rod is heavier because you constantly need to apply force to compensate. A balanced rod will seem lighter, even if it is actually slightly heavier, than an unbalanced rod.
Hope this help

Tristan,
On smaller guides, I rarely prep the guide’s foot. Some are just the right thickness and the thread runs up the foot easily. However, on larger guides, where the thickness of the foot is noticeable; you need to prep it before wrapping the guide onto the blank. I use a Dremel Tool with a grinding stone and it does the job quickly and neatly. Grind down the tip of the foot to crea

Christopher,
I remember seeing this article somewhere. You take the top third of a small plastic bottle of water and stretch a piece of rubber over the opening of the cap. You open a small hole in the center of the rubber. With the rod hanging, tip down; you place the tip into the small hole in the rubber. As you move the bottle up, it creates a small funnel and this is where the liquid is
