I really like the St. Croix SC III. I've built a couple of rod just like you've described and they tunrmed out nicely.
You might want to check with Hook And Hackle. They have a sale going on now I believe.

I bought an old 9 foot bamboo South Bend 3 piece rod last year. I cut off the reel seat and grip and left about 12 inches of the butt section. I removed the guides, stripped off the varnish, mounted a new seat, grip and all new guidesm and refinished . It made a nice 7 foot 4/5 weight.

Last night I left a rod drying overnight. This morning the thread wraps are still a bit tacky. I think my workroom got a little too cold during the night. Will the Flex Coat eventually cure properly once it's wamed up for a while, or will I need to put on an additional coat? thanks

That's interesting. We've got some kind of palm in our back yard that put out a ton of seeds that look like these. It's only done it once in the 25 years that we've lived here. I wish I'd cut one in half to see what the inside looked like.

You know Art, I was sort of considering removing the old varnish. It looks pretty crummy. There are a couple of places where it looks like it was touched before it dried. What's good to take it off? Will I need to worry about the glue holding the bamboo strips together being affected?

Thanks Bill. I was just wondering. I'm rewapping all the guides on a fifties ventage South Bend. The rod i'm working on has no value as a collectable so I'm toying with the idea of just using nylon thread and Flexcoat.

I'm rewrapping the guides on an old South Bend fly rod. The reel seat looks like it may be Bakelite or some kind of plastic. Does anyone know what this may be?
Also, the grip looks nasty. Like it was painted brown or there's a real thick coating of grime on it. Can cork age like tthis or was something painted onto it? Thanks

How should I go about locating the correct placement of the srtipping guide on a two-handed flyrod? And also, how many guides should I plan on using on a 15 ft rod? thanks
