3. sabaki rod
Hi,
My son recently returned from Florida, and he was telling me about this rod he called a sabaki rod. He said they were catching blue runners for baitwith it. He described the rod as a spinning rod with one guide in the butt section of the rod and then the line went inside the rod and came out at a tip top which was designed so that the line came out of the rod and right through the center of

Hi,
I built a Thomas & Thomas 8wt double hander about 3yrs ago, I used all fuji guides.I am not familiar with the Recoil guides, but I don't think you should have a problem with either one. I don't know if you ever used a double hander, but it is an experience and requires some pratice getting used to, you cannot double or single haul with these rods and different lines or shooting heads are

Hi,
I am building a 9 ft surf rod for fishing the beaches here in the Northeast. I was wondering if a spiral wrap would be good for this application, or just stick to the regular way. If the spiral wrap does apply the butt guide would be on the 0 axis and the next at 45 and the next at 90 and the rest at 180 or is there another way to do this. This is going to be used with a conventional reel an

Hi Mike,
Sorry I am late with this reply. I built a double hander 8wt fly rod for surf fishing, I was into the project and had a stroke and it set me back a bit, but I was able to complete the rod. R.B. Meiser was a great help to me and is a very knowledge guy with double handers. I was able to get a Thomas and Thomas 8wt 3piece blank for cost ( a very rare thing). and commenced to build the r

Hi Tom,
The Madeira thread you want to use is the way to go, however as most everyone agrees you must use cp just to keep from going crazy with your final finish. I contacted Madeira directly and got thier catalog, the polyneon colors are very interesting and your mind can go wild with all the different combinations you can put together. I am also into custom cars and bikes so you can imagine wh

10. Re: bass weave
Hi,
I recently got started in weaving, I was contacted by Jim Kastroff, which proved to be a tremendous help and wealth of information. He does excellent work, lives on the west coast, even though I live on the east coast and will not hesitate to answer your questions. There are alot of patterns for bass available, some are easier to do then others and the main thing is patience........take your

11. Miami Dolphins
Hi,
I am building a 50 trolling rod for someone in Fla and they wnat the colors of the Miami Dolphins football team. I checked the website and it appears that it is teal, orange with some white in it. I use gudebrod, sulky or madiera threads. Can anyone suggest the exact colors and does anyone know of a weave for the dolphin that is on the helmet of the Miami Dolphins. I have about 6 weeks to g

Hi,
this has got to be an old ugly stick, kinda bordering on antique, (just Kidding). I had one like that back in the 80's when they first came out, I had no problem rebuilding it, just that if you are going to go with EVA or Hypalon grips just keep the surface even so there is no bumps or ridges, and it works out fine. By the way, I went on my friends boat to jig mackrel with the rebuilt rod I

HI,
I recently switched to sulky and madeira threads, there are many more colors available then gudebrod, rice or fishhawk. Before I did any real wrapping with them I experimented on a spare blank. It turns out that the 40wt is a good thread because it is a sewing machine thread, however you need to use a couple of coats of 811 or flex coat thread sealer before you expoxy, I got no bleed through

HI,
You might try going to a fly fishing shop and looking at threads that are used to tie salmon flies, those guys have some nice colors that truly light up and cannot be missed.

Hi,
checked out your USMC Theme Rod, very nice work. I did a couple of these for a relative who was a first LT in the corp back in the day, I went nuts with the colors, so much so that I went to a recuiting office to look at the colors of the dress uniform, and I used those colors and stuck with it, mostly dark blue gold and red, your foregrip has some very nice work as well as the but grip, the

I recently obtained some madeira and sulky threads to do some wraping with, do mainly because of the vibrant colors and reading about it on the post. Before I started anything I decided to do a test on a scrap blank. I wrapped a black underwrap and tried a true red and an autumn gold over it and applied cp. I let it dry and found the black bled through. I am new to these threads having always use

HI,
That small cuticle pusher is called an orange stick and you can get them in any drug store and the darning dohickey with the little hook at the end is a corcheting needle available in craft stores, I use one when I do weaves and it picks up threads very well. If any one asks you think about how you can dazzle them with your brillance.

Hi,
I built a custom rod for my son who flew Jet Blue, he put it in a rod case with small master padlocks on it and checked it in at the counter and told them it was a custom rod and was willing to show them. When he got to FLA he found the locks gone and cable ties in its place and the rod was broken. He called me at home and of course I was furious. A few inquires later and it was determined t

19. weaving letters
I am new to weaving and I am in the process of teaching myself. I started with letters and find that "block" letters are not that difficlut. My question is how do you make the rounders letters in lower case such a a,d,o,. I have been doing them on graph paper first and then weaving, but I seem to be stuck on the circle ones in lower case, any help is greatly appreciated

Hi,
You can go to a local camera store and buy a flash diffuser that covers the flash on your camera, if the flash is built in this may not be possible. If you have an optional flash that mounts on the top of the camera called the HOT SHOE, this is possible and may be of some help. I have had some success by not lighting up the subject (which I assume is the rod you built) too much and not holdi
