same species we fish for here in michigan, if you are fishing outside the large guides and tip tops are a plus. i build them both ways. most of these yankees down here sit in there heated coops and drink beer so big or small don,t matter lol. But ice fishing is a social thing. tight lines, john i like my heated coop

Tim, I hear you on this one, very interesting, could be one heck of a good concept to use for jigging with a spinning rod on the detroit river. Holding a reel between your ring finger and your small finger as i do, with your first finger on the blank would be a good strike indicater. If you need any help on the r&d on this one let me know. I need to go and experiment on this for next sprin

Well, for what it is worth this is my opinion on hand wrapping versus power wrapping. I went to a Renzetti 3 years ago. After having wrapped 3 yrs on a hand wrapper and 3 on a power wrapper I will say a hand wrapper is like using a hand saw compared to a power saw,btw i am a carpenter by trade. The power wrapper is like having a third hand to me, once you get on to one of these machines there i

I just built 2, 7 ft. blanks for walleye trolling. One i put the second guide up from the butt to 100 degrees the rest at 180 and called it good. I think it looks good and it fishs well for trolling, never tried to cast it. The second rod i followed the instructions in Rm mag, adding a guide between the butt guide and the second guide, bumper. Only 10'' between these guides so the bumper has 5

Mike, what species of fish does he target? I have built on that blank for walleye jigging. As far as handles go in my opinion the graphite tube is as good as the cork, also a little less work. Jann,s has the 6 inch for about 10 bucks. I usually use 3 to 4 guides plus tip top after i check the blank out. Fishing in a coop or out in the elements? Would have to know that before deciding on the guide

Rich, you are right on the short mandrels, it will work with a little playing around.St. Croix uses the graphite handle on that new legend elite ice rod with the new spring bobber i believe. Jury is still out on the graphite handles, cork is tuff to beat. I spiral wrapped a 26 in. jigging rod last season, that gets the guys on the ice talking.Nice thing about building ice rods you can experiment

Rich. i built 6 rods using the i/8 id cork a couple of years ago. was pretty good at that time . as mentioned earlier stock changes. the problem is getting a mandrel stiff enough to turn them. andy dear made a proto type but he said it was too whippy. i ended up using some old blank tops as mandrels. It is doable though. I have since switched to Janns 6 in. graphite handles, put some fuji plate s

Phil, you can make a drum type dryer, using a barbeque motor or any type motor for that matter. i used a telecoping tent pole, ground a bolt square to fit in it, bolt through the rubber crutch end. cut some circles, glued some 1/2 material on the circles tapped them for thumb screws so i can move them around on the pole. still going strong after 5 years. real cheap to make too. oh. square end of

Hi Steve. a lot of the walleye pro.s favor the St. croix 5 or legend elite, same blank.6'6" med fast. I have a s.c. 111 and a s.c. 5 in that configuration and they both get the job done. Lets pick Mike Barkleys brain on this one as this is his home stomping grounds. John

Bill directions say 7 days to cure. I let mine sit for 10 days at least on this one. rod bond on the purple eva grip wiped it all up with alcohol, denatured not Beam.Paint stayed on with no problems. My advise, Paint, go fishing for at least a week or longer. Just have fun. John
