I was wondering if anyone could help me with a 'history lesson' on an old surf rod. My dad has a 2-piece surf rod that he wants me to re-condition/restore. The rod is 9' long, has a butt diameter of .763" (19.38mm) and the tip = 9. It's a fiberglass blank with a dark candy apple/burgandy color painted over silver primer. It had 5 wire frame guides and a red aluminum reel seat w/ black hoods.

Check out Riley Rods (sponsor link to the left). I've built jigging rods for myself and others on their 4'10" , 5'3" , and 5'8" blanks and was extremely pleased. They have have some 6'0" blanks and are very helpful. I've built on Mudhole and Seeker Hercules blanks as well, all are good choices.

I wrapped the guides on a crankbait rod last night using Fishhawk regular nylon orange. I've used other Fishhawk thread colors with excellent results, but first time using orange. I did a test wrap on a scrap blank with 2 coats of CP and achieved the look I wanted, so I did the same on the crankbait rod. Wraps looked good dry and I thought I had them packed good enough (and lightly burnished), so

Billy B - I've built a number of vertical jigging rods for grouper using a 5'8" blank. I used the simple spiral with bumper guide on all of them and it works well. Don't count the bumper in your guide spacing, but put it half way between your stripper/butt guide and the next 180-degree guide. With the line running under the blank, you may find you don't need as many guides as you originally

What's the best tool for cutting/shaping acrylic on a lathe? Looking at the pieces from Mudhole or Swampland to make reel seats. Will a plain chisel work or does it need to be a parting tool or ....?

Weldwood contact cement for the EVA to EVA. Bond the EVA into "subassemblies" then you can use a two-part rodbuilders glue (Flexcoat, RodDancer, etc) to assemble your cork rings and EVA subassemblies together. When you sand it down, be careful with the rough grit sandpaper (60, 80) because it will gouge out the EVA making it look ragged/jagged. It's ok to an extent until you get down cl

I've used that texalium tubing in 10"-12" sections for slick butts on live bait rods. I took a piece of 1/4" delrin stock (dowel rod would work) about 12" long and cut a slit in one end to hold a small folded piece of 60-grit sandpaper. Cut the slit in delrin or dowel deep enough to get the sandpaper in and wrap a rubber band around the very tip to secure. Chuck it up in a pow
