I have wondered if after running Madeira thread through a thread tensioner, a two disc under a spring type, would leave a silicone residue between the discs. Then when using regular nylon it would contaminate the regular nylon. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have any thoughts on this?

It is a trim ring that came with the reel seat from Pac Bay. I do not think the trim rings were sold by themselves, only with the reel seat. It did have a lip that slipped inside the reel seat so it was aligned with the reel seat and made a nice finished look. If you can find a winding check large enough and the right contour it could be used but it would not have the lip that slipped inside

If you have a 10in. miter cut off saw there are 10in. abrasive cut off wheels that will fit on them. I have used this set up for cutting 1/4in. all thread rod along with other cutting tasks related to rod building. John

A 24 hour mechanical plug in timer is what I have used for many years on dryer motors and drying machines. Cannot beat it for simplicity and ease of operation. There are digital 24 hour timers too but don't know anything about them. I started using a mechanical plug in timer before digital was invented.

The first coat of epoxy thread finish can still be tacky or cured to the touch (hard and not tacky) when you aply the next coat of epoxy. It is a choice the rod builder makes. If it is still tacky the first and second coat will cure out together. Generally we say to recoat within 24 hours. The reason for the, “within 24 hours”, recommendation is two fold. First, additional coats of epoxy

Thank you for the response and very good questions, but I do not want a blank recommendation limited by price or how often it will be used. I want a recommendation on what blank would make the best fly rod for the purpose mentioned. Even if I never get to take a trip like this again I want to have the best equipment possible to help make this trip a memorable one. I have lighter weight saltwa

I am going to be fishing for Barracuda, Tarpon, Permit, bonita, etc. in Baja, Mexico. I have been told that the species mentioned can run up to 25lb - 30lb and a 10wt. Fly rod is recommended. I would like to get some suggestions from the rod builders here on what is the best 10wt. blank to build on. Please give me your recommendations. Thank you, John Anderson

Ditto on what Tom said. Water is what Flex Coat recommends and the better choice would be Distilled water. Regular tap water has many things in it that after a time mixed with Flex Coat color preserver can cause it to become rancid.

Great advice and if you did not, you might want to polish the post that the thread goes around too. These devises can build up crud over time and it is a good idea to clean and polish them. John Anderson

Water will soften Flex Coat color preserver. I would use distilled water to prevent any possible contamination, a clean brush, clean finger nails, and maybe a clean lint free cloth. Distilled water is the best for thinning Flex Coat color preserver too. Wet the thread wrap with water using a brush; it might be best if you put the rod on your drying motor to rotate. Keep the wraps wet until the co

Shaking a bottle of Flex Coat Color Preserver is fine; just wait for the bubbles to dissipate before sticking your brush in it and applying to your thread wraps. If you are applying a very wet coat of color preserver such that there is liquid color preserver flowing around the wrap you will get the best results if you put your rod on your drying motor. This will rotate the rod until the color

Bill, There will be a new product at the show that has the Flex Coat Tip Top Adhesive just about how you want it. Check it out and ask Roger to supply it in bulk for you. Roger is back to riding every day. If there are any rod builders that are also avid bike riders going to the show Roger likes to talk bikes too. John

The Flex Coat Slip Clutch will attach to any motor with a 1/4in. shaft. Call Roger Seiders at 512-858-7742 and ask him for the 200rpm motor. John Anderson Flex Coat

All of the above suggestions are good and will solve the problem you are having. I would also say that this happens to most all rod builders at some time, even at Flex Coat. The official word from Flex Coat is we feel 98% accurate in saying that a tacky finish is caused first, by not thoroughly mixing the two parts, and secondly, not measuring enough of the two parts, (we recommend a minimu

Tom said something that did not come to my mind that is a very good point. Tom wrote: "Good ideas. Still the problem is once you're chucked up to anything, under power you can't stop the motor unless you turn it off, and with a gear reduction motor, you can't spin the rod backwards even when it's stopped." The fact is that with the Flex Coat slip clutch you don't just stop the ro

The slip clutch can be purchased separatly or requested to be put on a 6rpm drying motor set up when placing your order. The slip clutch would be an additional charge to the cost of the 6rpm motor set up. MudHole can request this special order from Flex Coat MudHole is a fine dealer but in fairness to all the fine dealers listed as sponsors to this web site any one of these that sell Flex Coat

May I add that the rod chuck with a slip clutch that is sold by MudHole is also adjustable for tension. You can adjust it from being a real light touch to stop the turning blank to a tension that would require a firmer grip to stop the turning blank. This feature makes it adaptable to many rod-drying situations. John Anderson Flex Coat

"Flex Coat’s New Concept Pre-Shaped Cork Reverse Pilot Bit" This is what we call it at Flex Coat. Mark is right on tarket about which way you build up your tape arbors and exiting slowly to prevent a lot of chipping of the cork grip. Let me suggest another way to prevent any cork chipping. When you have cut your way to the midpoint of the grip turn off the drill. Take the bit ou

A note to all, As a spokesman for Flex Coat Company I will state what Roger and the crew say will be Flex Coat’s statement on a subject but as an individual rod builder of many years I do have my own take on some subjects. So, On a personal note, I have never thinned Flex Coat with an added chemical. I have worked with Flex Coat from the time before there was a Flex Coat Lite, only the ori

Most US rod manufacturers thin their first coat of epoxy with acetone. There are two reasons for thinning , #1 to extended pot life & #2 for speed of application. If you just want a thin coat you can just push down a little harder on your brush. You may want to look at FLEX COAT"S web site -"Measuring and Mixing, how we do it". Also most manufacturers do not thin their second c
