This is a weave pattern I'm working on for a hybrid striped bass (wiper). The left is my first attempt. A few changes to the pattern and lots of care with thread tension resulted in the second attempt on the right. These are my third and fourth weaves attempted.

Hi Russ, Thanks again for all the info. I am indeed in Indiana but unfortunately I will have to do this on the cheap. This is going to be our first honeymoon after being married for 20 years. The nice thing is that she is promoting fishing! I don't necessarily have my heart set on bones, it seems to me that wading flats is something I can do. Albeit my chances of success are pretty slim.

Thanks Tom, your information helps a lot. I've been thinking that the 9wt would be best but I really don't know what I'm getting into fishing-wise. Oh yeah, the AAs listed are 70 and 73.

Bill, the fly shop route is out as there aren't any near by that can help. That and I don't have the rod put back together yet. Tom, I never determined the ern for this specific rod, but on the CCS data site there are two people that listed erns of 9.74 and 10.63 for the same rod. Thanks again, Peter

Thanks for the info Russ. I'll be staying in Key West but I've heard that the best shore access to the flats is in the Middle Keys. So I'll be doing some driving to get to the fish. Any info on good places to go will also be greatly appreciated. Peter

Hi everyone, Its been a long time since I've visited the board and I'm glad to see things are still going strong. I know I'm asking a question that has been beat to death but it is really more of a question about the kind of fishing I'm planning. So here goes... I am in the process of rebuilding a Fiver Rivers FT 9' 8wt fly rod that I broke years ago to take to the Florida Keys to hunt fo

I was working on a weave and was getting really frustruated. So I ended up calling Doc on the phone and had a great conversation with him. A great guy and very generous. His suggestions worked and I got the weaves done and the rod delivered! (I scored some big points with the Father-In-Law with that one :) ) Thanks Doc! Peter

I used black and garnet with classic twist black and white for trim and I did use CP. Peter

While we seem to be on the subject of permagloss I have a quick question. I want to cover some permagloss with LS supreme. Do I need to scuff the permagloss or wil the epoxy coat without too much trouble? The permagloss has been curing for about 24 hours. Thanks, Peter

Doc, as usual very nice work. While I love the look of the blue background, I agree with the others who say there needs to be more contrast between the bill and background. Peter

How about an interview with Doc in RodMaker? That should make for a great read! He has been very helpful to me via this forum and I'm jealous of all of you who have had a chance to meet him. Peter

Shawn, I too was worried about the 908 being too fast as I am anything but an expert caster. Don't worry. I am able to cast nice tight loops at a good distance without trouble. I'm sure that if I were a better caster I would get more out of the rod. Go for the FT. You won't be disappointed. Peter

Shawn, I'd consider an 8wt. over the 10. My 9' 8wt is a very powerful rod that i think will handle everything you mentioned, though I can't speak for any differences between the 9' and 10'. For the fish you are going after, I think the 10wt. is overkill. You can't go wrong with the FT, fabulous performance at a great price! Happy building, Peter

Thanks Doc, I was going to start a thread like this but you beat me to it! My kids gave me a couple of great gifts, A copy of Tom's Rod-Building Guide and a subscription to RodMaker! Happy fathers day to all you fathers out there. I hope that you can get out and catch some fish on all the great rods you've been making! Peter

Just to make you guys jealous, I've been fishing. Unfortunatley today the catchin' wasn't too good. Great to be out though. Now if I can just get back to rod building :) lots of work to do! Peter

I was looking at the wood grips at mudhole and am wondering how one goes about mounting them. I assume you use some sort of arbor. Let me know what you guys do. Thanks, Peter

Do any of you guys who have used a guide as a tip have pictures that you could post? I'm curious to see what this actually looks like. In my head, it seems that this would be unacceptably ugly. Thanks, Peter

Mike, I have a 908 that is a real cannon. I used it this spring on hybrid striped bass and it has amazing fighting power. If I were going to build a rod for bass around here I would go lighter than the 908. I use a 6 wt XT-51 for casting bass bugs (and for wipers after I broke my 908) and a 3 wt whenever I can get away with using smaller flies (bass are a riot on a 3wt). If you are fishing

What I have done is to quickly wrap some thread on the ferrule without any finish. This takes little time and I feel that this should be strong enough to hold while test casting. I also use masking tape to hold the guides on. Peter

Tom, does that mean that a Dan Craft 908-4 with an ERN of 10.63 casts best with a 10 wt line? I guess I'll just have to order those articles :).

Josh, I have a 6 wt XT-51 that I really like a lot. Can't tell you about the shooting heads as I've never used them. I would consider looking into a Dan Craft FT blank. The price should fall between the IM7 and XT 51. I love my FT908-4. Peter

Thanks guys. It's nice to hear people praise the stuff instead of bashing it into the dirt. I haven't built many rods but have always used CP. I like the look and have never had a problem.

I just gave my Velocity 2 a workout on a bunch of 8-9 pound wipers. It has been a great reel. Second season using it and never had a problem. I'd buy another in a second! Peter

This evening I was making my way down to the lake to get into some hot and heavy hybrid striped bass action when I took a misstep on the rocks, fell and broke the tip off my just finished FT 908 :( I have had a chance to fish the rod some and really love it. I guess the rebuild will just make me a better builder. This is the first rod I've broken, guess it had to happen sometime. Just wanted
