Another view of my first rod grip. This is my first build and I tried a birch bark grip. Also has some burl cork. The winding check is black ash. Took me a while to get it done but I learned so much. Thanks again to everyone for the support.

First insert I have made. This is my first build and as the project expanded I wound up purchasing a wood lathe. It took a bit of time but I was able to get a decent end result.

Quick follow-up... I opted to CP the whole section of decorative wrap including the open spaces of exposed blank... i was careful to wick away globs, blobs, puddles etc
The blanks is high gloss and i can see light brush marks from the CP.. will those go away under the epoxy when finish is applied or am i in troubled waters if i can see them before finish...
thanks and sorry for ne

Quick question... just finished my first decorative wrap... it an open wrap (elongated chevrons) using Madeira thread... i plan on a few coats of CP (chromaseal) but have a question... when coating a large open wrap do folks recommend only coating the threads or do you cover the whole section of the wrap including the exposed blank with the CP...
what are best practices here if a

quick question
just mixed a batch of rod dancer ultimate epoxy (15 min) for a reel seat application... had some left on mixing surface and after it setup it seemed particularly flexible when dried after 3+ hours in 75 degree room.
i do not build many rods so was hoping to hear back if it will ultimately cure to a harder state or does remain flexible when cured.
thanks as always

Hi All
Its been a while since posting here but i am taking on my first build of a casting rod and looking to see if the experts can point me in the right direction.
I am building my first casting rod for the surf - plugging rod / metal for bass. Blank is 9' Seeker CSW908 rated 15 - 25 lb line.
Can anyone recommend grip length - at least as a starting point. I have been having some co

Going to take a stab at my first surf rod. 10 Foot Seeker ULUA. Spinning. Is regular nylon in size "A" okay to use or should i be looking to some size B or C thread? thanks as always
Also - do folks generally suggest underwraps on surf rods or can i go without them? thanks

Looking to see if anyone has a recommendation for a 9 or 10 foot surf blank (spinning) for fishing the beaches / jetty for stripers. I fly fish most of the time so really appreciate ideas for spin surf blank. Looking for something on the lighter side. Will be fishing with 12 to 14 pound mono. looking to throw fin-s type plastics 3/4 ounce, 1 ounce metal, and smaller plugs and pencil

I just wanted to send my sincere thanks to everyone for all your help with my first rod project. I came to the forum a few months back as someone who had just purchased a fly rod kit that came with all the parts - blank, chrome snake guides, preformed grip, epoxy in little ketchup-type foil packets - everything to put a rod together.
But as I read, researched and asked questions the advice th

I am putting the finishing touches on my first rod (many thanks to the information learned here) and have a last question - is it necessary to cover the manufacturer logo/rod details that are screened on the blank with thread finish? In this case i am using a Sage blank that has the screen printed Sage logo and rod particulars on it. Are they good to go or should that be protected?
Thanks

So i just finished wrapping my first fly rod. Used 3/0 silk - rod is a 5 wt. also used single foot amtak ring lock guides. when i coated the wraps took extra care to fill the channels along the guide foot with permagloss with each coat - used needle and light burnishing to make sure was worked into the channels, no gaps or bubbles that i could see. However, it seems now that as the rod rotat

Trying to finish my first attempt at a birch handle with some wood accents. I plan to overbore the handle and use a foam arbor to get a good fit on the blank (5 wt sage tcx). My question is how thick does the birch and/or wood need to be? was intending to bore to 9/16th and insert the arbor but at it thinnest points the birch bark wall would just under 1/4" thick (maybe closer to 3/16&qu

i am working on a 4 piece fly rod and am wondering should i be inserting a "plug" into the top of each section...it seems to any of my factory fly rods seem to have a little flexible plug in the top of each section so that they aren't "open ended".
thoughts on whether this needs to be done or not are welcome and appreciated ... also, if i should be doing this, what materia

20. imitation ivory

Has anyone had experience using the tagua nut in a grip for an imitation ivory look? I have found several sites that confirm that slices from this nut turn well on a lathe and are very durable. Considering using a few "slices" in a grip as accents. thanks as always

Hello
Using some AMTK Titan single foot guides on a graphite fly rod. Considering this rod for my first try with silk thread. Has anyone used 3/0 silk thread with a Forhan locking wrap and if so, how'd it go? I am planning to use locking wrap and wanted to see if anyone had feedback on the same using 3/0 silk thread.
Thanks

Really appreciate the feedback. That sounds like an interesting idea to wrap the guide to look like its a standard tube. Since it sounds like a feasible option to use the single foot for the tip I may just run with it. again, thanks.

Building my first fly rod and plan on using American Tackle Titan ring lock single foot fly guides. There is not a matching tip top to this guide set and I have looked at a couple options but none seem ideal. Was considering using a Recoil double wire (just for a more custom look) but it doesn't really match the look so good.
Is it possible to use a single foot guide as the ti
