20lb - 40lb class rod seems heavy from a kayak, if you get a fish big enough to test the meddle of the rod its going to pull you and the kayak anyway defeating the purpose hahaha. you have to cast that from a odd position most likley with two hands if the rod is going to be that heavy. Remember the butt may hit the kayak or lap so adjust the rear grip length acordingly. Get yourself one of tho

i use 10lb fluor on #6 guides sometimes and you can feel it go through every guide on each cast, dont know if its worth whatever you get out of it to feel the knot of 20# go through the guides everytime you cast. I think 7s would be the smallest.

Well since I cant see what Im buying, and have to trust a strange to me retailer, which may or may not be honest or really looking well at the stock, or doesnt feel like knocking the price down to the next lesser grade or two because his supplier sent him something less than he got in his last shipment. Asking here seems to have netted more trust worty info than I could have hope for that for sur

A little confused but it sounds like you need "spring back presure" on each individual thread ( i think thats what you mean by bobbins). do you have that? It helps control it and not let anything slip. You can use a small fishing weight and hang it in mid air off the back of your table with the right amount of tension not to let the weight hit the floor. So its like a man hanging from a

Those guides are light for that. You need to use the beefiest guides they make if you want to have a insert ring type of guides. The ST look like they may work. Those Virtus guides Sean mentioned are strong too, carefull theres are two different types a light and heavy series. Designated by VH and VL at the end of the model number.

like posts above say, stop the dryer and wick, rub , brush, scoop, whatever the extra away. modern rod finishes level very well even after you stop the dryer and start it up again for good while. you said you have alcohol dipped something to wipe it away, only do that when you want to totally remove the finish. its not good idea to mix that in with finish that is going to stay on the rod it will

off topic but trying different line types will do more for distance that any guide will ever do. If I had guess I would say there might be a 50% increase from the worst to the best especially with very light lures.

For some reason when i hit "quote" all i get is a empty reply window... This is in reply to Tom Kirkman. "What is a true flor grade? Can you direct me to the standard or requirements for classifying a cork ring as "flor?" No I can not point you to anything, since every seller has there own gradings and it all means nothing. I am just asking the old school ro

This sponsor here sells the maderia color chart. I think its a must for anyone who is serious about rod building, if you ask nice they have been known to ship things for the cost of the stamp, so you dont have to pay more for the shipping than the chart. []

Trying to save myself a bit of time hunting, ushually buy cork in really big wholesale orders. This time since im not building much these days I need enough cork to build two sets of split grips, maybe 14 inches worth. I want decent cork, something that needs little to no filler to look halfway good, like a true flor grade. Hoping someone has ordered something recently and knows whats what with c

for long life, as in not cracking and non-yellowing, my money is on TM and aftco. I have guys fishing 200+ days on some rods and they are holding up for years. Opposed to almost everything else i have tried yellowing and failure in under a year with no where near that kind of exposure. I would get both the light and heavy versions of whatever you choose to see what works best for you. I think

They really need to make the tip tops, for the titan series before releasing more guides. Its been a year now. Kinda funny to use a fuji tiptop when all the other guides on the rods are Am-tak. I can not sell a rod with SS tip when im claiming titan guides.

A lil sand\grit gets in the braid and it causes the line to become very abrasive to these types of guides, of course every scenario if this is going to happen is different with so many more factors depending on the fishing your doing.
