Any tips on securing he initial turns of the thread wrap would be appreciated. I've read the instructions and still don't seem to keep the first few turns from coming loose, which is especially frustrating after I've completed the wrap all the way up.

Steve: There are a number of Harnells on @#$%&. There's a 580 (130 lb class) currently up for @#$%&, and you can watch it to see what it fetches. I applied gold metallic underwrap followed by sections of black overwrap on top of the gold. On a few of the black applications, it was very difficult for me to completely cover over the gold with the single course of black - the black thread would occasionally not fit snugly together, resulting in slight gaps where I could see the gold thread underneath. Just getting started in this fascinating hobby. I'm refinishing an old Harnell 9' two piece spinning rod. Had good success in getting the rod repainted at my local body shop with black flexible gloss paint, the kind they use to paint things like plastic bumpers. I've installed all of my guides.
