I use Elmers Probond. It has always worked for me and have no reason to switch. It comes off easy, unless you forget to wax a new threaded rod. What compounded this dumb move is that it sat for a week and the Probond was really set. Screwing it off with the nut did not work. The whole thing bunched up and split. I just ran a die across the threads of that rod, then waxed it. It won't happe

I made a fore grip on a threaded rod. Glued the corks together, then it sat for a week. This morning I formed it just how I wanted and it looked great. Tried to thread it off and it would not move. Tried several things including a strap wrench but ended up cutting it off. This was a new rod and I forgot to wax it first. I know I should get tapered mandrels but I have not. Don't forget to w

I read this thread earlier, then I, reamed and glued corks for a handle I am making. Got to thinking about it and why I use run-of-mill corks. Once agin I am out of the main stream. I like the looks of a handle with all the nooks and cranies of regular corks. I think it gives the rod character. It may even make it easier to hold on to. Or maybe it is because I am too cheap to buy high quali

Being a underwrap person, and having fought this battle many times. I will stay out of it this time, except to say that the extra time it takes on heavy rods is worth it. John Butterfield

Nobody has mentioned that most PacBay guides do not need grinding. I have switched to PacBay in most cases for this reason. It saves a lot of time. John Butterfield

Why do you use flex-coat light? IMO, flex-coat high build works better in all cases. I use a sealer coat of 50/50 flex-coat high build and MEK. Just paint it on, almost like CP, only takes a few minutes. Then after 24 hours, one coat of flex-coat high build goes on beautifully. I will probably get beat up again for mentioning MEK, but it makes my finishes much easier. John Butterfield

I just tried a new (for me) color combination. On a black blank, I used teal under wraps and royal blue outer wraps. Although I used two coats of CP, the teal is more gray than teal. The final result looks pretty good but not what I expected. Comments? John Butterfield

I also use a propane torch. I don't worry about bubbles. When the epoxy job is finished, I flame the whole thing with a propane torch. You must keep it moving all the time and don't get too close. All bubbles go away and the finish smooths a bit. A good idea to practice first until you get the hang of it. I learned this from the best full time rod maker I have ever met. He makes the rods f
