This is the start of the grip for the next rod I'm building for myself. The grip on the left is going to be the foregrip. The grip on the right was made to be the rear grip. Problem is that I'm not sure on the change between orientation of colors. Should I make a rear grip to match the foregrip or stick with this? Neither grip has been glued or sanded. Advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm still using up an old spool of the original 30# Spiderwire. It definitely wasn't any good as fishing line. Bought two spools, buy one get one free, from a local tackle shop that was closing. Spooled a spinning reel with one, but tossed it after a couple weeks use. The other spool has been handy for pull loops and many other assorted projects over the years. Tuf-Line and Power Pro are what I u

The popping blanks have a lighter tip than the ISB blanks. I fish my IP842 twice a week for trout and never have a problem tearing fish off. I use it throwing a lot of soft jerkbaits with no weight, or 1/16oz. jigs and grub tails with no problem. I don't know where you are looking but the published weight rating on the IP842(6-12) is the same as the ISB841(6-12) you mentioned and is much lighter

Yeah, the Cascade Composites blanks are pretty much the old Rainshadow blanks. The finish on the new ones are better. Try the Rainshadow IP843. If you like fishing light then the IP842 may be more your style. I have an IP842 built with a Quantum Kinetic 20 spinner and 10# power pro that is my favorite combo. Going to put 8# power pro on it next time I have to respool. It would would perfect with

I build a lot of the Rainshadow popping blanks for inshore trout and red rods. The mag bass blanks also make good inshore blanks if you want a little more backbone. Nathan

I've always used braided line. I have an old spool of the original Spiderwire junk that I normally use. Cut about 6" and double it back on itself. Tie a few overhand knots to make the loop whatever size you want, normally about 2" for me. Wrap the knots tightly with a piece of masking tape and then coat the tape with superglue. The tape makes a good handle for pulling the loop through t

I would probably call it a medium build. It is thinner than Flex Coat HB, but thicker than Flex Coat LB. It is probably similar to LS Supreme, but it has been several years since I've used LS. My problem with the Pac Bay is finding it in stock. I've tried three of my suppliers and all are backordered till ??. Nathan

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse anyone. Yes, epoxy is needed for marbling. I was referring more to the coloring aspect of reels. I considered tinting some epoxy and using it to color the frame and sideplates, but don't think it would be durable enough. I even considered tinting permagloss. Overall I think the Duracoat would be a much better finish. It is relatively inexpensive to get into doing als

For a more durable finish take a look at Duracoat gun finishes. I haven't tried it yet, but plan to sometime in the very near future. From everything I can tell it should be a very good finish for fishing reels. It is available in an assortment of colors also. I have been wanting a green reel to go on a rod I plan to start in the next few days. Problem is no one makes green offshore reels anymo

Don't worry, your not the only one that has done that. I tried to upload my last picture about five times before realising I needed to select a category. I even tried different browsers thinking it was a browser compatibility issue. Nathan

What about using a uni-butt or a ferruled reel seat. It wouldn't make two equal pieces, but at least the rear grip and reel seat would be a seperate piece. Nathan

I agree with using 3" sewer/drain pipe. If you can find the blue/green kind you will be even better off. It is slightly heavier than the regular white kind, but it is more crush resistant. 2.5" standard PVC is great also if you can find it. Nathan

I use the Forecast TiCh and TiN zirconium ring guides with the TiCh frames on rods all the time and like them. I even have them on most of my own rods. From the studies I have seen the zirconium ring rates between Fuji SiC and Alconite in hardness. The zirconium rings hold up great to use with braided lines and the TiCh coated frames work well in saltwater. The only problem I have had is the gold

Drill a hole for the hook tang to go into. You might need to grind it down some also to fit in a smaller hole. Mix up some rod bond and place it where the hook shank will go. Wrap electrical tape around the hook and blank in a couple spots to hold the hook in place while it dries. When the rod bond gets to the point that it has started to dry, but is still tacky, wrap it with nylon twine or parac

Why not just use a conventional boat rod blank? A blank is a blank is a blank, whether it's sold as a conventional blank or spinning blank. Don't know how long you plan to go but the Ugly-Stik GBU-846 makes a great spinning rod, if you can find one. Graphite USA makes some blanks that would work great as well. Nathan

Steel shot for a sling shot works well for putting in paints and Permagloss also and are much cheaper than ball bearings. Nathan

Normally it is the other way around. The first number is the ring size and the second is the tube size. Nathan

I use that blank in both colors all the time and it makes a nice rod. I use the rainshadow IP842, 843, and 844 popping blanks for inshore trout/redfish/flounder rods down here on the Gulf Coast. Even my own rods are made on these blanks. I personally don't think a better value and quality can be found in a blank. Nathan

You definately have it right with Glass Coat. Just put a coat on a rod and I think the working time must have been about 5 minutes. Nathan

I was looking at your photo and it definately looks nice. I think it will increase the popularity of slick butts. Only question I have is durability though. The standard black slick butt material is a type of polyethylene I believe. It isn't very scratch resistant and I'm wondering what the colored would look like all scratched up. Nathan

A triangle shaped case would be good for spinning rods with large guides also. Run the blank along one of the points and then the guides would point out towards the opposite side. You could even make it an isosceles triangle with two sides longer than the third for rods with the high frame guides and such. Nathan
