Craig, I caution you on accepting a gift from the Swamps of Louisiana !!!!!! It may very well have teeth, could be poisonous and will have a high chance of emitting a strong crude smell of some sort. Do not get me wrong. I really like the State of Louisiana and the people are fine ........... just not the swamps. .

Darby, Go back to March 31st. A post by Marty Martin. Greatest Distance with 1 oz. I had a shore casting distance problem to overcome in the Yukon. I just downsized Tom Kirkmans' surf rods that I saw at the rod building show. Worked great for me. Emory has a valid point about casting vs spinning reels for this application. Dan Miller

Michael, It was obvious what point you were making. I just thought I would do some quick math and have some fun. I have used some Salmon / Downrigger Trolling blanks to create my own version of special light lure, long casting rods. My goal was to cast far out , from the shore of a lake, in the Yukon, for Lake Trout. I could not see towing my boat, round trip, for 8,000 miles. The rods ar

TCSD-16 frosted silver. TCSM-16 frosted silver Both these trigger style Fuji reel seats show the same ID, OD and length dimensions in the catalogs. Is it just a matter of the extra finshing trim ring for the upgraded visual effect? Do I give up any mechanical properties by going from the Deluxe to the Standard seat? The holding or clamping power strength? The grade of the plastic graphit

Tom and Jim .......... Thanks. Mark ........ These are blanks that have not been finished at the factory. They were removed from their mandrels and sanded. They were not coated with a finish and the ends were never squared off. I will need to remove about one inch or so as the ends are somewhat ragged looking. Dan Miller .

I have some graphite spinning and casting blanks. These need to be squared off on the butt end. What method do you suggest I use? I have thoughts of using a vertical belt sander with something like a 220 grit belt. What about chucking the blanks in a lathe and using some sort of grinding or turning operation? Am I thinking overkill? Should I just pick up a smooth mill cut hand file, wrap a

I have some All Star blanks I am trying to identify. LB9042 HLB668 HSP905 SWS540 CSWS696 Think I picked these up at the rod show within the last few years. Some super friendly guy had a number of garbage pails full of blanks. Price was right so I bought a bunch. Maybe someone has, or can guide me to, some older All Star catalog listings on these blanks. I have the blanks in h

Riley, Your idea is O K if you only work on one rod design, using the same diameter and taper blank ,of the same length, every time. You want to be much more versitile than your suggested wrapper design will allow. Go to the photo section and let it be your guide.

Bill, Those wheels look pretty good. I can find a matching O-rings at a local supplier. What objection do you have against inline skate wheels? Dan Miller

Bill, Take a look in the photos section about page two. The Doug Cox wrapper uses a similar style of extruded aluminum structural channel that I am working with. I will use aluminum 4" angle and some 1/4" plate to construct the uprights. Inline skate wheels will be used as rollers. My headstock will be a small lathe. Dan Miller

Bill, Would you say that I can get by with four uprights? My longest blank would be 8' maximum. The vast majority of rods I will build will be 2 piece with maybe 6' sections at the most. I could see using only three uprights with care but thought that the fourth would be handy now and then. I can see that the smaller in diameter, longer blanks need more support. That is why I think I wil

Stan, My bed will be extruded structural aluminum channel designed to fabricate machine guards, tables, automated machinery, etc. The shape is 2" x 4". It has " T " channels running its entire length to fasten down my uprights with using 5/16" bolts. There are two 1/4" dowel holes running up the center of these aluminum extrusions. I will simply plug in dowels a

Fellows, Thanks for your rod wrapper answers in the recent past. My bed has now been chosen. It will be extruded aluminum channel 9' long. Comprised of two parts, the main section will be 6' and I will have a 3' extension. Most of my blanks are two piece averaging 3' 6" to 4' long. The longest single piece blank I would use will be 8' in length. Can I get away with making and using

Bill, You can also try an Exacto razor saw. Get the very fine blade with a bizzillion teeth. I have one and I also have the matching aluminum mitre box . Comes in very handy for triming off butts too. .

My wrapper will be just for wrapping. I have separate lathes for all other duties. How much clearance height from the base to the rod blank? Is 4 inches enough? That would seem a comfortable hand held height for me. Looking at the blank, mounted in the wrapper, do I want the rotation to be top of the blank coming at me or top of the blank rotating away? Top rotating away seems right to me

Have a chance to build my own wrapper. The main bed rail I wish to use is 9' long. I have the provision to create four upright supports with wheels. From what I see in photos and read in various publications, I figure this is a good start. Do you agree? Also, how close to the drive chuck would you say the first upright should be capable of being place? Are the lower rollers of your uprigh

Eric, I cannot comment on the entire lineup. I do know that the IMU series of one piece Musky blanks are hard to beat for the money. They have given me some great service. They are priced right, work well and I do not have to babysit them. When you get a big Musky, coming to the boat, alot can happen, in a short period of time. Your rod is not shown a great deal of respect, at that point. T

Permagloss users ........ Is it necessary to use a color preserver when applying Permagloss to thread wraps? It would seem to me, that the general opinion of this forum, is no. My blanks are all dark in color. Black, semi-gloss or matte graphite and unfinished graphite. I will be using Gudebrod A and D regular nylon. My thread color choices, at this time, are all dark ,such as black, deep

I gather that my application of Permagloss will be 4 - 8 coats on the tread. Do I or must I rotate the rod? Would the multiple thin coats of Permagloss find their own level or should I turn the blank over? How long? What speed? Also, I have brand new Rod Bond, unopened, sitting on my shelf now for 1 year. Is it still O K to use? Thanks,. Dan Miller

What web sights or forums deal with reel modification and/or servicing reels? I would be most interested in conventional reels. Maybe also ways reels can be modified or tuned up regarding bearings, drags and the desire to cast further. Also, where can I go to catch up on some of the mystery behind reel lubes and oils? I mean, what does a produce name really tell me? Right now I use Atomic,

Guys, Thanks for your comments. Lynn, Thanks for the information on Hatteras. Somewhere out there I recall a British sight that dealt with Abu maintainence but can't seem to find it now. Also, I have come across comments on various forums about reel modifications but there seems to be no central information about this. I will call Tres Irby and check out what he has to say. I nee

Started building my own Muskie casting and trolling rods just this year. This forum sure was and is very helpful. Looking for information on the many various older models of Penn and Abu Ambassadeur reels. Models, capacities, parts scources and self inflicted maintainence. Most interested in keeping them up and running, adding optional parts and making modifications for improved performance.

I have a few Bass Popping and Flipping, one piece, 43M graphite blanks standing in the corner. Can these blanks be used for spinning rods? My goal is to use them for Pike and Walleye. Lures used will be the full range of spinners, spoons and plugs. The range of these blanks is 7' to 8' long and ratings are 6 - 12 to 10 - 20 lb test line. I would say that I am looking for general purpose rod
