I've turned a handle out of Rosewood for a fly rod. I searched the phorum and found I can do away with the resin by soaking in denatured alcohol. Tom Kirkman said after doing this you could apply the finish of your choice. Would this include Flexcoat which I have use alot of because of how it brings out the grain and for its waterproofness? Has anybody had experience doing this. My second qu

If you go to Batsons web site and look up your Batson blank it will tell the guide spacing and the guides. If you need further help just call Batson and Kerry or someone will be glad to help you with that information. They are great people to deal with. They have personally helped me in the past. Lon

I couldn't help but notice that no one mentioned that the guide feed should be ground and honed to keep the angle going up the food not so steep as to cause the thread to slip back down making harder to wrap and stack the wraps. Also doing this will make the tip of the foot flexable with the blank and help to keep the finish from eventually cracking at the point where the foot meets the blank.

Tom, My spool diameter is 45 millimeters. The distance to the butt guide is 592 millimeters with the second guide at 1062. The choke guide is 1282 millimeters. The NGC (spool diam 45 mil x 27 mil) suggest the choke guide at 1215 mils. The actual spacing I gave you was after I did the static deflection test and moved them a little. Sighting down to the choke guide did give a pretty g

I'm rewrapping a spinning 10'6" float rod using Fuji's Concept Guide System. I followed Tom Kirkmans instruction. When fiished I did the deflection test and everything looks good. As it turned out I used a #30, #16, 8"(intersect guide) and 11- #7 guides out to the tip spaced at 5 inches apart. In total 14 guides where used. Does that seem to be too many? Even using this many guide

What is the best way of applying Perma Gloss to a blank? In the past with other finishes (Flex Coat), I was successful in using two mixing cups with the bottom cut out and a piece of latex in between them with a pin hole in it. Drawing the blank through it left a pretty smooth finish. Perma Gloss how ever eats the latex out. Brushing Perma Gloss on with a brush is tricky and leaves brush mark

I'm building a 41/2ft. light spinning rod and was going to use the concept guide method but found out on this short of a rod that I did not have and intersect position. What is the best way of doing this? Should I cheat a little with the angle so it will intersect or should I use the spool diameter to calcuate the intersect guide. When I did the latter it came to be a little over 37 inches.

A friend who does alot of catfishing on the Snake River here between Idaho and Oregon wants me to build him a custom rod. He would like a casting rod that can handle a minimum 20lb. line and be able to throw 6 ozs. of lead. He prefers a 2pc rod. He uses an Ambassator 5600 reel and would like to beable to cast around 100 ft. His old set up, a 7 footer will do only about 60ft. To achieve this

I can't express enough of my thanks to Tom Kirkman and this rod forum and all you guys out there that contribute to it. I wouldn't be so brave or successful in my rod building if it wasn't for you. Often my wife asks me what I am doing on the computer so long and I tell her I am studying or doing my homework assignment. My current project is about done and I thought I would share it with you b

I have read some of the posts on applying permagloss. They recommend a sponge for doing this. I was wondering what type of sponges and where you get them. If permagloss eats away at plastic will it do the same to a sponge? Or are sponges made out of different material that will not be affected? Would those sponge type paint brushes work? Thanks for the help

I don't know where this went so I will try again. I just stripped an old boat rod blank and was wondering what type of finish or paint I should use to cover up the white blank. Also how to apply it so it looks more prfessional with no streaks. Are there a variety of colors? Finally, do I need to put some sort of clear protective finish on top of it? Thanks for your help. I have just stripped the old finish off of boat rod. What is the recommended type of finish to put back on it? Any special kind of paint etc. How is the best way to apply this so there is no streaks in it. Does it come in different colors? Do I need a clear protective coat on top of it? If any of these products are special items, where can I get them? Thanks for your help. This phorum is

I'm going to build a casting salmon rod for a friend who doesn't know too much about it. I tried to ask questions that would help me determine his needs. What I do know is that he will be fishing from the bank and a boat here in the northwest and will be using a Garcia reel, probably a 5600 model. The salmod will be "silver" and "kings. I thought maybe a 9 ft rod rated for up t

I just need your help or confirmation on using the concept system on a 6ft UL rod. This is the first one I've done on a 6 footer. I have done it on longer rods and liked the results. When I got through and done the Static test I had 7 guides altogether. Does that seem like too many? The spacing from the tip measured 4 7/8, 10, 15, 20,25 1/2, 32 3/4 and 41 3/4 inches. The guide sizes from th

Here it goes again. I must have done something wrong the first time. My son is getting married this spring and is going to spend his honeymoon in the Bahamas. His wife to-be likes fly fishing too. He has hinted that a nice wedding present would be a 4pc fly rod to take with them. I'm seeking your help on recomendations. Is a 9' 4pc good or would I consider a 9'6"? Is 8wt sufficient or

Peter, I build custom wooden handles for spin, cast and fly rods using various woods. I purchased a set of mandrels from Lamar Reel Seats which dictates the size hole I drill in the wood before turning it on the lathe. I use the size that fits the rod blank that is just a little larger. I then us masking tape to shim it to the correct diameter. I check this by sliding the wooden handle and

Brian, I recently purchased a set of mandrels from Andy and they work like a charm. I have now turned 3 complete ultra light spinning handles and one fly rod handle with matching barrell real seat. Every one of the center holes remained true. He gives great service! Lon

I read Rich Pedros listing, 2/21/05, about casting reels. Nothing was mentioned about the Shimano Corvalus 401or the Cardiff 401. And while we are at it how about Pflueger Trion 66? I have been looking at these to use on a 9 foot heavy salmon rod. They fit my budget better and I wonder if anyone out there can give me information on them. Thanks, you are All a great resource!
