The person I am building the rod for wants a light surf rod for small stripers and bluefish. A Salmon/Steelhead blank may be just right.
Thanks

Chris look at the Lami CGBT 84 1ML it is a good all around 7', 20lb blank. it is a little heavy for fluke and a little light for bass and blues but it is the closest you can come to an all around rod without having a rod for each. I have several customers that i built that rod for that purpose and they love it.

Sorry guys the rod is an old fiberglass rod with a wood handle my guess is from the 50's. the rod is only going to be used as a keepsake and not used.

10. Rod Restoration
I am in the process of restoring an old rod . After I strip the old varnish off the rod I am going to recoat it with Gudebrod rod varnish. My question is what should i coat the guide wraps with? Shoud i use the same varnish? I want to stay with the period the rod is from and not use a finish of today like a high build.
Thanks Rick

Al For a 30lb rod you may want to check out the calstar grafighter 700L or the Lamiglas CGBT841M, both are composite blanks, the 700L has more of a taper than the Lami . For 40lb check out the Calstar 700M and the lami CGBT841MH, these are also composite. I have caught striped bass into the 40's on my 700L it has a soft tip, fast action with plenty of back bone. The Lami's are more of a medium

David, no where the thread comes in contact with the rod blank is OK. The problem I am having is where the thread comes over the top of the guide feet . and to answer your question, yes after I did the light sanding i cleaned the area with Alcohol. I hope this makes my 1st post a little clearer. Thanks for your responce. Rick

13. Finish Problem
I am having trouble getting the finish to stay on the threads where they come off of top of the guides. This is a heavy stand up rod using sprial roller guides and size D thread. I have four coats of flex coat hi build on the guide wraps and I can still see the lines of the threads. i tried a light sanding around the guide edges with 600 paper between coats 3 & 4 but the same thing happ

I agree with Tom on the Elmer's wood filler, it works great and if you mix a little natural with the golden oak it matches almost perfictly.
