i always use flexcoat lite for AT LEAST my first coat. It seems to soak in better as it is thinner. runs around the guide foot and threads better than the high build does on the first coat. as far as hardness in epoxy, i don't really want an epoxy that dries super hard. Hard epoxies crack and chip easier than epoxy's that will bend with the rod but will still hold solid as concrete. just my o

Hey guys, know i've seen a lot of posts on custom decals, but i was wondering if i could get some questions answered besides where to get them. Any suggestions on where to get them however are needed and would be appreciated! i have used gold decals in the past and they turn out good and seem to be the #1 option when going to order decals. I was wondering however if anybody has somebody that g

I was just wondering if anybody else ever experiments on wrapping things besides rods. I just wrapped 2 of my duck calls in anticipation of the upcoming season. I just through a few bands on the tweeter (as i call it) end of the call. I've also tried wrapping an old powerbait jar (ok, i admit i've used bait before, sue me). i practiced on a pen when i first started wrapping. I just thought

no problem guys! I know when i was starting out, all the things i read were difficult to understand. Just tryin to make it a little easier on the new guys! I thought it was funny when i would read, "look for the rod to form the 'natural curve'" Just to let these authors know; when you're new, you're not quite sure what is natural. lol

Just a couple of tricks i discovered. thought someone could use them. First, when wrapping butt wraps or cross wrapping (ie chevrons or fish), its very dificult to keep your axis straight (ie, your centerline where your thread crosses up). I've heard some people say use the reflection of the light as your guide, but i think i found something that works better. Figure out your spacing for

i built my bench tall and then i ended up using a short piano stool. Personally i like to be able to get up next to the work without having to bend my back as much. Now i can get close to my work by simply leaning forward. Good question! I made my bench to fold in half as well. I used a person's rollers that they make and sell for rod building (not a sponsor) and then made the table to attac

Thanks for the help guys, also what size thread do you guys use? i always use size A thread. I think it looks good and packs nice and tight, but obviously a thicker thread would fill up the blank faster. Does say a size D thread look bad in a crosswrap pattern? thanks again

Hey guys, i've been reading some posts about guys coloring in an entire butt wrap in a matter of 2 hours on a 6 inch fill in. Now when i do these wraps, it takes me the majority of the day. Granted they come out nice, packed tight etc, but judging by these other guys' work so does theirs!! I was just wondering if you guys had some shortcuts or different way of doing things. Most of my time se

fran, i will get those to you tomorrow evening!! thank you so much! for the mean time i posted 2 pictures in the miscellaneous section of the photo part of this site. Take a look at those and tell me what you think. I really appreciate you're help guys. Also the fly rod was found in a brown fold over canvas bag. It also has 2 of the top section. My grandfather passed about 3 years ago and left me an old Daiwa fiberglass rod. It's a 6'6", fast action, probably for 4-8 pound test. It has a sticker on it that says "daiwa custom built" around a gold crest. The letters are in gold as well. By the style it looks (just a guess) as 70's or 80's. It had a broken tip top, broken tip, and a broken guide in which the solder had bu

yeah, this rod is staying in the family. Whether it was a nickel or 10,000 i don't care. I just want to know the story. My grandfather was from new jersey and then moved to Long Beach, CA in the 50's. I don't know if a friend of his made it or whether he got it from a store. I'd hope it was somebody i could contact. I doubt it based on the age but who knows. My grandfather wasn't an avid f

hey guys, my grandfather passed away a while ago and i was recently going through some of his stuff, reminiscing at his cabin and found a bamboo fly-fishing rod stuffed in his closet. Its hexagonal, has green thread on the guides and then green and purple threads alternating along the blank about every 2 inches. the ferrules are in perfect shape as is the butt guide, the snake guides, and the t

best tip i've heard is put the glue stick in a gun. tip top glue sticks fit right in most small glue guns. take a small piece of finished wood, something that is a little slick to the touch and squirt the glue in lines on the wood. once the glue dries, scrape it off the wood and you'll have glue "rods" of sorts that will fit in tip tops. put glue in the tip top and break off glue ab
