Thanks for all of the input. Eric, if everything I have read on this phorum about the dan craft blanks are true, and they cast as well as you all say they do, I just might give him my sage and keep the dan craft.

My 12 yo son and I had a deal, if he got straight A's on his last report card, we would build him a fly rod. he got a 3.85, (close enough in my book). It will be his first rod. we fish mainly for trout on small to medium streams in WV. He really wants a multi-piece rod and I want him to have one with a medium to medium fast action (8-9ft). However, he is very hard on equipment and I don't

Mr. Kirkman, I saw the picture of the camoflage rod you posted in the photo gallery. How did you lay out the pattern and what paint didi you use? The rod looks great!

eric, from my experience, it was a very easy process. I used krylon paint (two coats) and a finish coat of Testors dull-cote (for a matte finish). If you want a gloss finish, krylon has a clear coat also. Let each coat dry very well in between coats and let the final coat dry 8-12 hours and you should not have any problem whatsoever. The process I used seems to be consistent with all the

I have just built a rod on a blank that I painted. I sanded the blank with a grey scotchbrite pad and painted it with Krylon spray paint. For a top coat I used Testors Dull Coat (wanted a flat finish). In researching ways to paint a blank, I swapped e-mails with Ken Preston (you can locate him by doing a search of this message board), who was very helpful with the whole process. I also let th

Is it OK to use 5 minute epoxy to attach your grip and reel seat? What I have is your basic stuff from the hardware store. It says it is water resistant, is this going to be durable enough over the life of the rod?

I have been reading about staining grips on this phorum for a while and appreciate all of the information availiable. Grandpabob's pictures inspired me to stain the grip of the rod I am working on now (my first rod). I had read about the stain basically not penetrating too deep and had read about different builders heating the stain and some even putting them in canning jars overnight. I a

Mark, I do not know if they sell their blank, but I had been looking at rods from www.marchbrown.com for the very same reason. Also Global Dorber has a 6 foot 3piece in 3/4 weight.

I posted a couple of weeks ago asking for information about changing the color of a blank. I got a lot of good feedback and also exchanged e-mails with Mr. Ken Preston who was extremely helpful and encouraged me to jump in and build it. Just wanted to let ya'll know how it turned out and again say thanks for all the information provided. I am building a 3wt for native fishing and wanted

Thank you Cliff Hall. I have my first rod laid out and started to practice wraps today. I was getting very fustrated when packing the thread because they would get loose on me. I was going to post a question about it until I read your post. It is so simple, I don't know how I missed it. Packing your wraps toward the butt of the blank is one of the little tips rookies like me need to hear.

I am in the process of building a 3w 7' 3piece and the guide spaceing recommendtions that the manufacturer sent indicate that a guied should be placed "on the ferrule". Does this mean to incorperate the guide in the wrap I use to reinforce the ferrule, or should I lengthen the wrap to incorperate the guide. this is my first rod and not sure about what to do. pat ryan

Randy, The process you use sounds extreemly easy. I was wondering if you encounter any problems with multi piece blanks, that is does the 4 coats of paint affect the fit of the pieces?

I am in the process of building a 3piece 3 wt. got the blank from Global Dorber. I am very happy with the blank, but it is only my first build and not sure how it stacks up to other blanks. I did a search of this nessage board for dorber and the comments made were favorable. very affordable and the kit comes with good hardware and a nice rod sock and alum. rod case. their support when I have

Thanks for all the responses. I had thought about getting someone to paint but was worried about how well the paint would hold up and if there was a type of paint touse or not use. Once again, Thanks

I was wondering if anyone knows where I could get a blank "painted". Some time back I found a builder (in virginia I think) who would process a blank and return it to you in basically any color that you could want, but have lost his contact information. I have found very little information about this topic and would welcome any input that ya'll might have. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

20. 1st Rod
I am going to be building my first rod over the next month or two. It will be a 7', 3 wt, 3 piece, to use on native streams. My wife got me the blank from global dorber. I think that it is an Ozark blank. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these blanks.
