I sure wish I could make this. Unfortunately, it is the same day as the Three Rivers Fly Fishing Show in Ft. Wayne. I will most likely be there tying flies at the PHW Indybooth. Hope everyone has a good time.

If it where me, I would skip buying a kit. With all the videos on the net all you need is a wrapper and a dryer. Everything thing else besides the reamers, video and book, are disposable. You can get them when needed. You can also get away with out a dryer but it makes it a lot easier. I myself actually prefer the flex coat hand wrapper. The side supports are adjustable to different lengths. You

I have used Perma Gloss before but just came across the LumiSeal product. These both seem to be the same product. My old bottles of perma gloss are no good. One was solid and the other was thick and gooey. Now I need to get some more. Are both of these same product distributed under different names or are they completely different? I prefer to use a one part finish that dries quickly since I do n

What is the best epoxy to use to mount grips and reel seats? I have used 5 min epoxy on the first two rods I built. I bought some rod bond a while ago which brings me to my next question. Is there a shelf life on epoxy? My rod bond I bought almost two years ago but never opened it. I also have some other epoxy for guides which is old and unopened. Should I just get new epoxy or use what I have?

One thing to consider is if you want full length line or head and running line. If you want a full line, then I suggest using something like the Royal Wulff Ambush line in either a 5wt or 6wt. These lines should have enough weight to help with spey type cast. If you want a head system, then something like the OPST which was mentioned will work.

I am planning on turning my first grip and have a few questions. The first deals with the design concept. How do you come up with the design pattern you intend to use. Since this is my first time turning a grip I do not have cork, burl, or burnt rings on hand to put next to each other and see if I like it. Is there an easy way to visualize the look of the finished grip before hand? Next questions

I recently seen the Redington Chromer switch and spey rods with what they call Polymer Pinch Grip sections. They seem more like a silicone rubber of some sort. I was wondering if anyone is selling pre made grips with this material.

I am building myself a light two handed rod. This rod is being built on the Anglers Roost IM6 9' 10" 4wt blank. I will be using their 19" handle kit. I am needing to know what size guides to use and the spacing to place them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Mike P.

Thanks Tom. I went ahead and ordered the CD. I can always use the info on it sooner or latter. Mel- I have not built the rod yet. I am still in the planning stage. I am not even sure if I am going to do this yet or not. I love fishing UL tackle for blue gills, crappies and the occasional bass and walleye. I am mostly using jigs in the 1/64 to 1/16 size on 2 to 4 lb test on a Shimano Sedona

I was wondering where I might find Ralph O'Quinn's RodMaker article on making multi-piece rods. Would this be the same article on Making ferrules. I would like to get a copy of this if possible without having to purchase the Volume 4 CD. I can understand if I need to buy the CD. I am looking to extend a 4 piece 6'6" rod to make a 5 piece rod at least 7'6" to 8. I was looking at usin

Tom, you said "My feeling is that if you need to obtain more "softness" in order to cast a light lure weight range, you'd be better off buying a softer rod rather than taking a stiffer one and saddling it with a great many more guides than needed." If this is the case then why do you recommend that when trying to build a longer Ultra Light rod, people would be better off exten

The way I had understood this is one wrap before climbing the guide foot you do one wrap behind the guide(blocking wrap). Then you do 3 locking wraps. One locking wraps consists of a wrap around the guide foot and then the rod before starting another wrap around the guide foot. Then 2 or 3 more blocking wraps. I have seen people just wrap the guide foot 3 before making another wrap around the bla

I have a few questions regarding these wraps. The first one is the simple one. Can you use permagloss as the finish between wraps. The second one is has anyone experimented with more than a 2 color base wrap or 2 layer wrap? I will give examples of what I mean using letters to correspond to colors and numbers correspond to pullout thread. Example # 1 Base wrap A,B,C,A,B,C,A,B,C Top wrap D,

I have read the NGC article from the library. I guess I could have given you more info on this build. The blank is a PAC BAY 7' 9" 3wt matt grey being turned into a spinning rod. I am going to be using a Shimona Sonora 2500FA reel. This will be used as a float-n-fly rod and casting micro jigs (1/32 or less). I needed larger guides to allow a rubber bobber stop to pass through the guides with

I am in the process of building my 2nd rod and needed some help selecting guides. I am building an ultra light spinning rod for panfish using the pac bay T2F793 blank. I am planning on using American Tackle Blue Zirconia Ringed Guides. I was planning on the BCSF size 20,16,12 or 10, then the BZFT 8's or 6's to the tip top. Which tip top should I use, the BZTLT or the BZTFT? Would there be much of

I would like to say thanks to all of you for your input. I have decided to purchase the Rikon Mini Lathe from woodcraft. They are presently sold out at the moment but are expecting a shipment in on Monday. I am looking forward to experimenting and possibly turn a few handles and reel seats. Thanks again for all the great help. I would also like to thank Tom Kirkman for a great site. I am looking

I am looking to purchase a good lathe to turn some wood and acrylic handles. I am new to turning and don't know which ones are good and which ones are junk. I have been looking at a few different ones and thought I would ask which one you would pick. I am in the process of building my 2nd rod and would like to have an acrylic reel seat on it. I don't have a lathe or a way to turn one myself and was wondering where I could get one? Would some one here be interested in turning one for me? If you are wondering I am building another UL spinning rod from a PAC BAY 3wt blank. IT is the T2F793 blank. I would like a larger reel seat size either

I have some coats and clark 40wght rayon thread for fly tying. I was wondering if I could use this to wrap the guides on a Panfishing rod. If Ican do I need to add CP to it before I epoxy. My guess is I do if I dont want the color to fade. Thanks again for the help. Mike P.

I would have thought they would have to tell you how much you paid for any tax. If I am correct most excise tax is eligible to tax deductable. If they dont tell you how much you paid in taxes then you couldnt deduct that ammount.

I am not sure if this will work or not but I have heard of people baking wood and using a seasalt solution. Use the seasalt solution like the alcholo bath. You can also back the wood in an oven at 400 degrees for 6 or more hours. Cant recall where I have read this but might be worth a try. Mike P.

I have a question to ask in reguards to this. Please keep in mind I am very new to rod building. Instead of using thread to tie guides to the blank, can you use heat shrink tubes instead before you epxoy them. Or would the heat from epoxy melt the tubes and damage the rod blank. I am curiouse if anyone has ever tried this and wondered how it work. Mike P.
