Mark...no apologies are needed. I have never thought of myself as a prominent rod builder. Just a builder that made functional rods to the best of my ability. I actually ran across an article the other day that Rich Forhan had penned regarding the Revolver Wrap. I also typically did a "Modified Revolver Wrap". I believe that Rich also used 4 transition guides spaced 6" apart, to ge

Goodness, Spencer. You make me blush.
I appreciate your kind comments. I did build a number of rods, back in the day. Back surgeries and other issues have interfered with my time at the wrapping table and being able to keep up with all the cool stuff that everyone else is doing. Some of the decorative butt wraps are simply amazing. Billy Vivona and others have been instrumental in making thos

Spencer...I apologize for my SOH. (Sense Of Humor) I appreciate the insight about the colors fading after or during the fight. I had heard that about Dorado but wasn't sure about the others. One thing that I didn't know about tuna was that they were warm-blooded and had to be bled out after you catch them. They are beautiful fish!

An hour? My arms would be mush! I am usually fishing for bass & crappie. I appreciate the additional insights. I went tuna fishing once, out of Newport, OR. My friend lives in NY and will be pursuing yellowfin & bluefin tuna. As an aside, don't they all become "black & blue" after flopping around on the boat deck? Sorry. Just my odd SOH surfacing...

I am preparing to build a couple of 130# Stand-Up tuna rods for a friend in NY. I understand that there was an authoritative article done in the past in RodMaker. Since that issue is no longer available, is there a way of getting a copy of that article? Tom...is that something that you could do? I would certainly appreciate it. Let me know the cost...
Thanks!

Rich...
So good to hear from you! I can no longer find your contact information, thus the post. You can shoot me an email at: georgescustomrods@msn.com. I have been on the edge of rod building for a couple - three years due to back surgeries, etc. Nice to be back in touch.

Can you tell me how long those pieces are? I might be able to reshape them to fit the split grip design that I'm building.
Thank you so much......George

Roger,
That sounds about right. It looks like cork in color. I have a lathe, so gluing and shaping will not be an issue for me. I will need a total of 10". Please let me know the cost of the rings and an address and get you some cash. As long as they are all made of the same material, it won't be like trying to match up two different materials. The Mooseskin is a rather firm EVA which is

Since the take over of Merrick by MudHole, I am unable to obtain the Mooseskin EVA in the color of "Korkalon". I need one, 24" stick with a 3/8" i.d. for a clients rod that I'm in the process of building. I have been in touch with MudHole and they aren't able to find any on the Merrick inventory sheet. Would anyone have an extra piece that they'd be willing to sell? I'd also b

Billy...I was looking for a specific color that they handled. I have seen your work with EVA and I am totally impressed with your attention to detail. Did you recover from Sandy? I saw that you'd been hit pretty hard. Thank you, sir.

I was looking to see about contacting Rich Forhan and ran across this article regarding split rear grip handles. Rich was a mentor through the Bass Fishing Home Page and taught me most of what I know about building bass rods. I continue to build them in much the same way that he taught me. If you are still watching this board and not off on Safari somewhere, I'd love to hear from you.

Can you tell me where I can get Matagi components, now? I have several pieces that I need to purchase. Second question: I need some Mooseskin, 3/8" i.d. and was told that it was no longer available. Does anyone have a 24" piece, or several, that they would be willing to part with? I certainly appreciate your time in advance!

Thanks, Herb! That really helps. I build bass rods almost exclusively, so this is new territory for me. I'll look up Bob on-line and perhaps give him a call if I have further questions.
Once again, thank you for your assistance!

I have a neighbor that wants me to build a spey rod for steelhead. He wants to use this blank, rather than a longer, traditional spey blank. I have not built one of these rods before. Can you give me some direction in regards to handle length in front and behind the reel seat, or placement of the reel seat? What guides do you typically use? Any information would be appreciated. Are there an

I personally use 5-minute epoxy instead of thermal glue, which allows me a bit more time to work with the top. I load the tube then place it on the blank, then twist it a couple of times, distributing glue all around the blank tip. I then reload the tube with epoxy and reapply. As mentioned above, the glue will usually squirt out the end of the tip top. If it doesn't, it will squeez

27. Re: shaping eva
One of the things I do to avoid this is to remove the handle from the mandrel and fit a reel seat onto the EVA to check for fit. It sure saves a lot of time and trouble. When using sheet rock sanding screen, I find that it will leave lines in the EVA. I may use it for basic shaping, but I prefer to use a bastard file when turning on my Jett Mini-Lathe to obtain the shape. I then use emory clo

Question...
I'm building a Calstar GF 700ML Live Bait rod for a client. He was wanting to use the MooseSkin Korkalon...with a .750 ID. The butt is .895. First of all, with this work? I'm not sure if it will stretch that far. He wants a rear grip about 15" long and .750 is about 17" from the butt.
I believe that I'll need to use a 20mm reel seat.
What guides / sizes do you
