I finsihed this rod for my Mom. I had finishing problems (see post a couple of months ago and also see favorite photo section below) and followed several suggestions, mostly double wrapping some pink and using two coats of color preserver. It came out GREAT! She caught a 23 inch, 4.6 lb bass on it.

Billy, it was good seeing you and the other NERBS again. I'm glad the weather didn't ruin your trip. I know Jim hated to miss the show this year, but hopefully he can make it next year. Robert and I really enjoyed being there and talking with you guys. Thanks for the stuff for Patrick too, he's going to love it. You guys are really great!

My son Patrick and I have been using LS Supreme for our finish. But now after 3 - 4 years of a lot of fishing the wraps have dulled and yellowed, especially on the top of the rod where the sun hits it. What can be done to save the wraps? These are the first rods Patrick built and really would hate to redo these things. Do you think a light sanding and a recoat of finish would restore the wrap

My son Patrick uses both NCP and Maderia thread and always does a practice wrap on a dowel rod. He puts CP (U40) on one third of the wrap, no CP on another third. Then he puts finish on the wrap. It's amazing how vibrant the colors remain using CP, either using NCP tread or regular thread.

Good Jim, now when we fish together in a couple of weeks, when I catch more and bigger fish than you, when you're chasing me down the street you'll probably drop your rod!

Jim, this is perfect. Go ahead and mount the grips and all on your rod as they are. Now you'll never have an excuse when you loose that big one cause you dropped the rod due to your old age. Congratulations, patent pending! On the other hand, it might not be such a good idea because when you visit me later this month you'll probalby be chasing me down the road swinging that 'ugly stick' at m

We just posted a couple of pictures of Patrick's 5th rod, more to come. This is for my cousin's son who is in the military. It's a Rainshadow blank surf rod with Forecast components. We would like to thank Robert at FishSticks4U for his assistance in helping choosing the blank and components. It's really an awesome combination. We also want to thank Tom Kirkman for his help in choosing the r

You might consider a CTS blank. At the Rod Building Show they had an awesome pink blank that looked just like bubble gum pink. They sold a bunch of them.

This is a big problem for my brother Jim from Indiana. He won't know what airport to fly into, Charlotte where one brother lives or Raleigh-Durham where I live. I think its great, closer to me and more stress for Jim!

I am 16 years old and my aunt wants me to build a surf rod for her son for Christmas. He lives in Pensacola, Florida and fishes off pears and beaches, sometimes on boats. I have built four freshwater spinning rods (you may check them out on the photo page). This will be my first surf rod and need a little help. I would like to know what would be a good surf rod for the fishing that he does. A

Tom, Decal Connection recommends putting some Microset on the decals. Do you do something different or will this do the job?

My son, Patrick, is having some problems wrapping on a Rainshadow blank, which by the way is an awesome looking blank, but is very smooth. The probelm he is having is that the threads keep slipping on the blank while he wraps the threads and the tighter (more tension) he wraps with the threads, the more the threads tend to move on him. So, could he rough up the blank under the wrap section wi

Tommy, My son, Patrick did a pink based wrap on a rod for his Mom (and in fact it didn't scare the fish away...she caught a 4.6 lb, 23 inch bass on it...proof the fish didn't run from the pink). He tells me he used NCP thread with 2 good coats of CP. He did two layers of pink thread for the underwrap and guides. Before he did the wrap on the blank he did a practice wrap on a dowell rod and

Mick is right, the new waterslide decals from Decal Connection are awesome, easy to apply, and won't tear. My son and I have build three rods, used a bunch of the regular decals on the first two rods, then with the third rod using the new waterslide decal material we used only one decal. They are absolutely great, and Jimi is also great to work with.

Phil, it's under my son's name, Patrick. It's on about page 6. Also, put some finish over the color preserver "test" and it's looking pretty good so far. WE HATE PINK

My son and I are making his Mom a pink rod (see Photo page). We put a coat of finish on this morning and disaster struck! You can see every single pink thread on the blank and the blank even shows through. We did a test using color preserver on the pink and you can more easily see the blank through the thread with the color preserver than without the color preserver, but we didn't add finish t

Is metallic thread, size A, strong enough for the main thread in guide wraps, or is it better to use size A thread and decorate with the metallic thread?

Another question, do you use the polyester or rayon thread, and is the metallic thread good to use?

I'm thinking of trying the Madeira Thread and would like to know what are the major differences between this thread and thread from Gudebrod. So far my son and I have only used the Gudebrod NCP thread and metallic treads. Do you need to use color preserver on the Madeira Thread, where do you get it and a color chart?
