This is a Castaway production handle with a split grip and a split reel seat. This picture was taken at the Bassmaster Classic ESPN outdoor show in Birmingham Alabama. Looks like custom ideas are spilling into production rods.

Steve, Do you use a standard size tip top, or do you use a 3mm? How small a ring size can you go without having a problem on a spiral wraped rod?

Look at the Batson Rainshadow or Forcast Salmon/steelhead blanks. The Rainshadow IST1142f or IST1141f will work good. It's only 9'6" so you will have to extend the blank 6" to get 10ft. For about half the price of the Rainshadow you can get the Forcast SH1141-2 and also extend the blank.

Graphite arbors work great with cork. I use size GA30, they are a little over 1 inch in diameter. Here is a picture of one of the first rods that I built with a Tennessee handle and arbors to mount the reel on. They are very durable and easy to work with.

I found some 0.014 red brass tube stock at a hobby shop. Has anyone ever used it for extending rod blanks? Will it be strong enough to work? Thanks, JC

I use a gel pen called "Gelly Roll". I write directly on the blank, if it does not go on well I scour the area with scotchbright pad and try again. I let it dry about 1 hour and coat with ThreadMaster or Flex-Coat. The key to not smearing the ink is to not touch it with your brush, just let the finish flow off the brush onto the blank and level out. The pens are made in Sakura Japan and

I like Gudebrod #521 Chestnut with gold metalic trim bands. The chestnut without cp matches the blank very close after the finish goes on.

I posted a picture on the photo page of a Castaway production rod. It is a split handle, split reel seat, and no fore grip bass rod. They had the rod at their booth last week at the ESPN Outdoor Show in Birmingham, Alabama.

I am having Trouble with line slapping the blank between the reel face and the butt guide. How much is too much, and should it slap the blank at all? This rod is set up with Fiji new concept method using a straight edge lined with the spool shaft of the reel. Guides are 25/16/10/8L with the butt guide at about 18 inches from the reel face. The spool diameter is 45mm. While test casting, the

Thanks for the help guys! I have been getting Rodmaker magazine for the last 2-3 years but do not have that issue. I ordered the back issue today! I am looking forward to learning the right way to extend blanks. JC

I am extending a blank from 6' to 6'6". I have a piece of fiberglass that will insert into the butt of the blank to give me the correct length. My question is; should I over-wrap the the area where the extension goes into the blank with thread, or place another peice of scrap rod blank over the area where the extention goes in to give it support?

The Best all around would have to be the St.Croix 3S70MF or the 5s70mf. I use the St.Croix 3S70MF built as a spiral wraped casting rod every time I am in the boat. Just my opinion

I use jumbo size graphite arbors just like you would use under a reel seat. The size is GA30. They are 1.16 inches in diameter and 1.0 inches in length. I cut them in half to make them 1/2 inches long and glue them up along with my cork. It works great! I use them in Tennessee handles where you would tape the reel as well as on casting and spinning rods wehre your hand contacts the handle.

The book Custom rod Thread Art is out of print. I have called and talked to most sponsors and they do not have them in stock. Most web sites still list the book but they need to be updated to show the do not have them. I finally found a used copy online at Abe Books. I had to pay $40 to get one. The last two that I have seen on @#$%& sold for well over $40. check out this post:
