I am building my brother a 9' 5wt and am in need of some guidance. I am not a fly fisherman so I am at a loss for how to set up his rod. He is a beginner as well so taping up guides and casting probably wont work there is also the added problem that he lives 2 states away. Any advice on guide spacing and how to test for proper spacing would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to thank the folks at Batson Ent. I recently broke a rod I was working on for a trip a week and a half before I left. I called the folks at Batson and told them my situation they made sure to rush my rod through the warranty department so I could get it returned to me and built in time for my trip. I felt this was going above and beyond So Thank you Bill, Karry, Adam and the rest of

4. Cork Clamp
I recently purchased a couple Irwin quick grip clamps and would like to turn them into handle clamps. I saw a couple of examples of these clamps at Lamiglas and was wondering if someone could give me directions on how to construct one. Thanks

I would like to try building some rods without fore grips and was wondering what is used to plug the top of the reel seat so you don't see all the glue inside.
Thanks

I would recommend a Rainshadow IST 1085. It is a 9' with 10-17 lb line. It is a very nice rod it is not as sensitive as the XST models but it is more durable which is good for a beginner. The length makes it a great all around rod you can drift fish, float fish or throw hardware with it. It is not the best tool for anyone of these individual techniques but it will get the job done very well. Thi

I have the Sedona 750 as my Sea run Cutthroat reel and it is very nice. Like stated earlier you can use it in salt if you rinse after each use. I have had mine for over two years with out any problem.

Try the Rainshadow line by Batson Ent. I use them for Salmon Steelhead float rods and love them. Then come in the black/grey you are looking for.

I think you are saying that you are having problems with epoxy gumming up the works. My advice use less epoxy and take more time. You could also try stopping your wraps a few turns shorter so you don't need to get epoxy as close to the folding part. If you are putting epoxy on with a motor try hand turning your rod when you put finish on the hook keeper wrap.

I hand turn my blank to put my finish on. It gives me a little more control and I think better results. I would give that a try when you first start if something goes wrong with the application it is a lot easier to see and correct without to much effort.

Try the batson seats if I am not mistaken they are designed to not need arbors.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the casting seats with the locking nut being the area I was most interested in. Does anyone know if I can get that style nut?

Tim- All three of those rods will work. I use the IP series as a plug rod and it works well. I even had to drift fish with it on one trip due to unforeseen circumstances and managed a nice fish. However I am with the others when I suggest trying something a little longer and lighter like the IST993. However If you have ample steelheading experience in your area and 7' rods with lots of power are

I really like the looks of the reel seats on the Daiwa Steez line of rods and was wondering if anyone knew if they were available to the custom rod builder. Here is a link to an few pics if people are not familiar with these seats

19. Epoxy Question
I am working on re-fiberglassing a wood and fiberglass boat and I am using 5 minuete epoxy to adhere the fiberglass to the boat. My Problem is that the epoxy hardens as I am mixing it. At first I used a cup to mix in then I switched to a piece of tin foil but the results remained the same. The epoxy began to heat up and cure as I was mixing and was beyond workable in about 30 seconds and solid wi

The length sounds about right for a good light action rod. I would be carful with the hook setting ability. While it is true that added length will help with the hook set a slow soft action takes a while to load up and deliver and power to the line. Not only do you have to pick up your slack and stretch in the line you also have to pick up the flex in the rod. I built a fly rod blank (9' 5wt) int

If you try to shim it and force it to work you will only end up redoing it later on. Believe me I know from experience. The fact that it doesn't fit right will eat away at you every time you look at the rod. Just cut the hood out and try again.

The country code for the good old us of a is 0011. I am not sure how that works with a toll free number though but if you have another number for them the area code is 360. I hope this helps. They are great people and always good to talk to

Try a round cork float. They sell them in the local tackle shops around me. They come in several sizes and I think the smaller one might work out. I have seen the rods with round foregrips and think they look kind of nifty. Or else don't use a fore grip and fill with epoxy painted black until you reach the end of the real seat and install an epoxy winding check

I am working on my first spiral wrap and am hoping that some of the more experienced builders could give me some tips on what to watch out for as far as common mistakes. The blank is a Rainshadow BP1025. I am using roughly a forhan revolver wrap.
Thanks

Rich- You do HAVE to buy the dream reamer. I used to hand ream my grips until I got the dream reamer. I don't know how I survived without I used to hate fitting grips now it is quick and fun. Power tools just make life better. They work great but they are made of glass so heat is a problem.

I like the Rainshadow that I have for Searun Cutthroat fishing. It is a IS721F. Two piece for storage purposes. The Rod has a soft enough tip that pulling plugs works well with it. I live in Washington so have only fished crappie once but this rod seemed to do the trick.Perhaps the IS720 would be to your clients liking.

It sounds to me that a steelhead blank would work great for that application check out the Rainshadow XST 1084 or 1025.
