With Gudebrod scaling back their thread selection I was wondering what other brands are out there that could possibly fill the void left in color selection by Gudebrod

In replacing size A nylon Gudebrod colors, there's a ton of alternatives (Madeira, Gutterman, etc). To any other sizes, it'll be much tougher.

Pac-Bay has thread in A and C I think. They were nice enough to give out some
samples to the Lamiglas show attendees. I will be trying some soon.

Rice can still be found and Holland if your lucky. There are many many sewing thread Mfgr's
that make threads suitable for rod building uses. Just test wrap them first with & without CP.

Madeira (polyneon), Coats & Clark (trilobal), Sulky, Gutterman, YLI, and Kreinik are a few.

I WAS GIVEN A COUPLE OF ROLLS OF PAC BAY'S RODSMITH THREAD AT THE LAMIGLAS SHOW. REALLY BEAUTIFUL SHEEN ON THE THREAD. ALSO, SOME REALLY NICE COLORS. I'VE DONE SOME TESTING AND HAVEN'T YET BEEN ABLE TO RETAIN THAT INHERENT SHEEN AND SPARKLE: SOMEWHERE BETWEEN GUDEBROD REGULAR NYLON AND A METALLIC. I'VE TRIED CP, WITHOUT CP, PERMAGLOSS AND LS SUPREME. IF ANYONE HAS USED THIS THREAD, I'D APPRECIATE THEIR COMMENTS.

TO THE POINT: THEY HAVE 32 COLORS IN NYLON AND NO CP; SIZES "A" AND "C" , METALLICS IN 12 COLORS; SIZE "A" AND "D". I'VE ALSO HAD SOME DIFFICULTY IN FINDING ANYONE WHO CARRIES PAC-BAY'S THREAD. YES, I'VE TRIED THE SPONSORS ON THE LEFT. DID FIND A LITTLE FLY SHOP IN WASHINGTON STATE THAT CARRIES IT. I SUSPECT AS GUDEBROD PULLS BACK, OTHERS WILL FILL THE VOID.

Keep in mind that with sewing threads, stick with Polyester or nylon. If you don't use CP, you may want to test on scrap first as some have had fish eye problems without CP (and some haven't). I would stay away from Rayon, Cotton, etc as they have been known to sometimes cause problems.

what about using sewing thread for wrapping guides? i've heard some threads aren't strong enough to wrap guides with and recently had an eye in the middle of a blank come out for some unknown reason. was a single foot eye wrapped with the locking frohan

I, and many others, have been doing guides for a couple years with Madiera with no problems. I don't know where that started but a few years ago Mark Crouse posted pix of an unscientific test that he did by hanging a 16 lb box of detergent from a small guide (I think it was an 8 single foot) with no problem. Fly rods(and some regular rods) have been tied with silk for years.

A guide pulling out would hsve nothing to do with the strength of the thread. Just a guess, but I would think that most thread would be more than strong enough.
