I'd reach out to Voodoorods.com and inquire about their Matagi T-Russell blanks. I haven't fished them but I've read very positive things about them and they're offered in very light ratings. All the other Matagi products I've used are top-notch, and I'd expect their blanks to be the same.

I haven't built it yet, but comparing it to the xray SB684 and the xray MB684, it definitely has the fastest action of the 3. It's nearly identical power wise to the SB684.
It should be a good 1/4-1/2oz dropshot rod I'd think if you're talkin

Oh yeah I understand they won't degrade if completely enclosed, I just know I'm not perfect and like the extra insurance that the aluminum affords.
In a perfect world, I wouldn't use any winding checks (and sometimes don't when using hood covers that don't show the end of the reel seat), but when needed I prefer the security of the aluminum. I'd be interested in the weight difference, if any

I only use the aluminum winding checks on the thread side of reel seats to help "seal" the seat. They're not gaudy and they provide a more permanent solution than the rubber winding checks which can degrade over time.
I dont particularly like them on split grips and find them unnecessary (both from a cost and appearance standpoint) if the grips are reemed appropriately. If I need to c

I've never seen a collection of winding checks.
Everytime I need one, I order 3 or 4. I usually buy one each a size up and a size down from what I think I'll need.
I build mostly bass and inshore and 95% of my blanks need between a 11mm and a 15mm winding check so I do my best to keep those on hand in a couple of finishes (silver and dark gunmetal usually)

You're not searching with enough characters. I think 5 or more characters will return results. Less than that doesn't appear to give any results.

Pick your preferred frame and insert combination for the kb and kt guides.
The the SJ765 you may need one more kt.

They're a sponsor of this site so I'd trust them (if you're unfamiliar, look at the list to the left).
They sell thrasher blanks which have a little bit of a cult following if you dig for reviews. I haven't personally ordered from them but I also wouldn't hesitate to if they had a product I needed.

I made a post through the app with a picture and it isn't showing up on the normal website version of the forum.
Is there a way to force the website to see those posts?

I use a spiral wrap with the following angles (starting with the butt):
0 (on top)
45
90
135
180 (on bottom)
I place the butt guide per usual. Then I rotate 90 degrees and place the 3rd guide, then rotate another 90 and place the 5th Guide. Those 90 degree alignments are easy to do without any sort of angle measurements. Then I go back and eyeball the 2nd and 4th guides right in between the 1st,

I'll be spiral wrapping this teal apfg 710 this weekend. Can't wait to throw micro cranks ans other BFS hardbaits on it.

As long as the line isn't going below the blank when under load, you should be fine. Just don't try to lift fish with it. I agree that 12 guides on that rod seems excessive.
Just curious - why are you opposed to the acid wrap? It alleviates the issue you're facing and has really no downside. Not to mention, it's easy to execute (even easier than having all the guides on top in my opinion).

I just finished a cb705 build. I cut mine down to 6'10. It'll make a great chatterbait mini max rod, or even a great 3/8oz jackhammer/stealth blade rod. You can go up to a 1/2oz jackhammer on it I'd think but I'd stick with a spunk shad type trailer if I did that.
If I wanted a dedicated full size chatterbait rod, I'd go with the delta cb706, the apfg 745 or (my personal favorite) the xray neo

Over $75 is free shipping. So 2 of the APFG cost $125

I just finished a Delta CB705 that I cut down to 6'10" for small cranks (dt4, atv 1.0, etc...) and chatterbait mini max. It has very little curve. The glass/carbon junction is pretty far down the blank and there is no noticeable deviation of the blank on mine.
Conversely, I've built 2 of the Xray MB765 NEO blanks and both of those have a pronounced curve over the last ~24" of the blank

My brother is asking me to build a pair of bent butt swordfish rods for fishing out of Venice, LA. We typically drop around 5lbs of weight in the northern GOM and the 60-150lb class rods are preferred. Probably leaning towards a ~6' blank.
The first one I looked at is the NFC Xray Highliner 5880-1 but I have 0 experience with the Highliners. Also considering the Rainshadow RCTB56XXH.

What type of finesse jigs are you throwing on the sj703? I haven't built that blank but my impression was that it was a ML.
For 3/8oz finesse jigs, I like the xray sj736. I recently built a c6o2 mb725 and it's a little lighter but may be a great finesse jig blank too.
The xray SB683 is a phenomenal "power" BFS rod for hard baits in the 1/8-3/8oz range. Insanely light blank. I can th

Definitely need to always adjust guide placement after a load test. I find the spacing I provided to be reasonably close for most fast or x fast casting rods in the 7'-7'3" range. Have to start somewhere. But even on 2 Neos, my end spacing will be a little different since each blank has its own deflection profile.

What's the intended use of the rod? The 2 neos I've built for throwing chatterbaits got a Fuji RV6 butt guide, 3 alconite kb5 and 7 alconite kt5 guides. Tip top was a 5.5 ring and a 6 or 6.5 tube.
My guide spacing (measured from the tip top in inches) started here for both and then had some minor adjustments using a static line test:
2.625, 5.625, 9, 12.5, 16.5, 20.5, 25, 30, 36, 43.625, 52.75

This board is sponsored by many blank manufacturers. NFC is one but by no means the only one. All of them make exceptional blanks for your purpose.
I'd be looking hard at the following blanks:
From NFC:
- Xray SJ725 or SJ765 (just depends on the length you want)
- Xray SJ736 (lighter than the others, probably too light if your total weights approach 1oz)
From Point Blank:
- PB731MHXF
- PB761MHF

You should look into the NFC options.
The APFG lineup is lighter than traditional glass and fishes faster than glass.
The Delta CB rods are composite with glass tips. Kind of the best of both worlds.

I found a 6" piece off an Xray SJ736 I trimmed, and the skinnier end fits perfect as an insert for the NFC Carbon Tech reel seat.
The OD of the middle of that piece of blank is 15.2mm.
I also added a small piece of poly arbor to the barrel of the seat.
All told, that brings the weight of the seat to 15g (the Fuji 16 ECS seat with 13mm ID that I would have otherwise used weighs 19g).

Also, not sure what you're planning to do with the thread hood cover, but the FUJI size 16 ksk/ASH hood components seem to fit it.

Lots of options out there for 15mm OD carbon tubes.
Go here:
Matagi makes colored woven carbon tubes, black gloss and Matte and white woven carbon tubes. Also they have colored aluminum inserts (the ones for the TVS reel seat are 15mm OD).
Please note - the Matagi carbon tubes are sold BY THE INCH so in your "QTY" field you need to put the length in inches of tube you want.
