Howdy All! How do you figure out which tip top to use? I know they come by ring size and tube size. Do you want the ring size of the tip top to be the same size as the last guide? When repairing a broken tip then you would need a bigger tube size with the same ring size. I would sure appreciate some advice!
Thanks,
Micky

I have noticed the bracing was shorter on one side of the casting guides that I am using. So the main thing is that both sides of the guide have the same length of wrap? My thoughts have always run towards function over form but you spend the time building a rod, even if it is a rebuild and you want it to function properly but look good too.

Howdy Dennis -Thanks for the tip! I have never used a center finder rule but I can understand the process your talking about. As my guides get shorter, do I keep the same number of wraps leading to the foot for all guides, whether that is 3 wraps or 10 wraps or however many? I can see where the total length of wrap would get shorter due to the length of the guide getting shorter also but the lea

Hey Zachary, yes, it is an old faded blank, painting would be an option. What about a very thin light coat of paste wax? It would have to be after the guides are finished and very dry.

Sorry, but Yes, I was referring to the bare rod blank between the guide wrappings. Makes sense about the added weight.

Hey Tom, What about a rebuild? Guides and handle stripped, epoxy scraped back to the blank. So just sand it easily to 600 or 800 before starting the rebuild?

Howdy all,
Beginner Question - what do you put on the bare rod blank ( for finish ) between the guides?
Thank you

Howdy All,
I had no idea that a simple question would raise this much discussion. That shows me that this board is definitely worthwhile. With just this 1 “thread” my ignorance in rod building has been greatly reduced. From an old retired shop teacher who is barely past wrapping with a V notched shoe box, sewing thread, and 5 minute epoxy, I want to thank all of you!!

Howdy Chris, I like your philosophy! Thank you for replying. You are correct on my first build. It’s pretty sad but boy have I learned a lot!! Same thing I would tell my shop students when they were disappointed with how their first project came out. I’m just having fun learning a new hobby.

Thanks Roger! Lots of good info in your reply. I don’t understand what you mean by “wraps after the guide”.

Well, they won’t be jumping into my boat anytime soon if bling is what it takes. I’m still trying to get my wrap lengths the same. Lol. I am however interested in trying a weave.

Howdy Rob, this entire conversation has had the main theme that you are saying, ‘excess is bad for performance’ better to go a little small. Lesson learned!! This was an older Tournament Choice rod that I fished saltwater bays and light surf. Lost 4” of tip so I stripped it down and put new handle and guides on it. Put a new handle on cos the spine was off from the handle. (I think I did the righ

Thanks Guys!! Awesome info and perspectives. Minimalization (sp) sounds like the key to retaining the characteristics of the blank. Tom - GREAT forum, lots of SME’s, thank you for your time!!

Thank you Michael! When you say a quarter of the stripper guide length, are you meaning a qtr. of the length of the guide foot I am about to wrap? Seems to make sense to my mind. Measuring would be key. I’ve got Starrett dial calipers and use Siri as my conversion constant.
To repeat: 1/4 of the length of stripper guide foot for stripper and all reduction guides. All runners are same measured l

Wow! That means I have been using way too much thread and making too many winds. Been doing 1/4” or more and not all are the same number of wraps. Counting winds would solve my inconsistent winding lengths. I think part of that problem is my not being proficient at starting my winds. CURE = practice starting winds!!! Thanks Spencer.

Howdy All! Very new to all this and am learning much from this forum. Thank you! Question please. Is there a rule of thumb about how many wraps (or winds?) to make before starting to walk the thread up the guide foot? Does that length depend on the size guide, ie: gets shorter (or fewer) as you work your way up the rod with decreasing size guides?
