I've done many of them and just use the propaste I use for handles but cover it with thread when done so if you can't wrap over it the color won't look good. I dab some on then use a thread burnisher lightly dipped in alcohol to shape it. Just spin slowly and clean it up and set vertically like you said. Thread wrap over it can be tricky when your wraps try to slip.

I can't imagine flycasting and thinking to myself "dang if I'd had the new orvis helios rod maybe I wouldn't have missed the shot!

I have a GB 890-4 and have airflo gulf redfish #8 on it and it feels great to me. Hopefully I'll be testing it on some live creatures later this week in LA

Just a heads up test your reel first if you are going to try using a 16, it was too shallow for my nautilus but the 17 holds them well.

I've also used the dremel in this situation and seems to work well for me.

I usually glue my tip top first and Ive had that happen when I find the axis then disassemble the sections before placing my guides. Sometimes slight curves in the second or third sections that I didn't notice then reassemble differently Tom and I must have been typing at the same time!

Herb's idea or Orthodontic elastics have been great for me. On small blanks just loop it 3-4 times to achieve the right tension before sliding it down the blank. You can make small adjustments to the guide but holds well enough to wrap. I have some of the ligatures Roger mentioned and they are great for small blanks like he mentioned.

I agree, I probably have been a pain with a few of my orders but they fixed it for me! And when I broke the tip on a blank they replaced it pretty quickly without any issues.

I slipped and fell wade fishing the other day and slammed my rod and reel down on a big rock to catch myself. The fly reel is pretty dinged up but you can't even find a mark on the carbon grip.

I'm not sure on the sizing but I'm using the Fuji KT Ti Sic since the TLSG was discontinued. I think the TLSG used the be the go to. I think a lot of people like the Seaguides that are similar to the TLSG. On the 7 wt I used a size 6 KT and it easily passes a nail knot to my butt section.

Herb might disown me but I think I'm a ceramic convert now in the bigger rods but I don't know if I would on the lighter weights you are building. I have gone back and forth on 7-10 wts and could definitely feel a difference in the rod response after switching to ceramics with the extra weight but it seems to cast every bit as far as with the recs. Fighting fish on the ceramics is also super smo

This has been very helpful thank you. I wish I had another use for a lathe right now but since I don't make cork grips at this time I can't really justify it.

Herb and Tim, Thank you for the help. I'll try that! To clarify, in the past I've definitely driven plenty off center in the past that started concentric. A few times I've been able to recenter them but its tough.

This batch of 4 was clearly off so maybe I shouldn't even have tried in the first place. But helpful info thank you. Makes me want a lathe for sure.

Does anyone have any tips on straight reel seat arbors? I can't ever keep them centered and it doesn't help starting with arbors that are crooked. I just went through 4 flex coat arbors that were crooked and couldn't get them centered up. I have the pilot bits I can try but doesn't matter if its off to start? Thanks Al

Leslie, The lesson went great and yes it was with a guy that is very saltwater oriented. We worked a lot on a smoother power application and delaying the rotation and it has really helped me. It was totally worth it. Saturday I went out with the 10 and the Outbound shooting head and focused on those issues and it was just firing it out there. I have just been trying to muscle it way too much!

I did just notice on my 10 wt I've only fished a few months the rec tip ring is already grooved noticeably. Yeah I've fished a few spots where the line got a little dirty but if that's the type of fishing I do I might need to consider ceramics.

Leslie, You are describing my problems exactly and lots of tailing loops with the tarpon line. On the 10 I've actually been throwing rio tropical outbound with a 425gr head for big streamers. It took me a long time to even learn that they are designed to be cast the way you describe with just a few feet of running line out of the tip. I would try to carry more and it would fall apart. My typic

A lot of good info, thank you for the help. I love the idea of being able to compare power to other blanks down the road. I ended up finding CTS's power measurements in their knowledge base and my measurement was very close. Also this tells me the overpowering is due to poor technique which I assumed was the more likely problem!

Well talk about embarrassing! I guess I did screw up the "simple test" maybe I should try to edit my previous posts ha ha.I just repeated and got numbers in the 11 ERN range. I guess I flipped my measurements on the easy math. Definitely learned something... watch the simple math and I have a 10 and 11 blank that are pretty much the same ha ha Thanks for the help

I was surprised also that it was lower than expected since I always hear reports of them ending up higher. But gosh that seems like a pretty simple test. The 10 was a CTS and the 11 was a Northfork.

David, thanks for your help. And good point on the conditions and line weight. I throw some huge streamers so maybe the answer is a bigger rod ha ha

I need a little clarification please and I realize this might not even be a rod building question but given how many use it here I thought I should ask. I had to dive into the CCS/ERN stuff to try and learn more about what lines work with certain ERN's etc. I just feel I'm overpowering my rods when I try to carry more line for distance and just for background I've been throwing liquid crystal t

That's how I feel and I have some of those on hand so I think I'll go that route. It seems to me that the two legs have to be similar to a single thicker L style. Thanks a lot

I was ready to try some ceramics on my next rod but when searching for some tlsg's discovered they are discontinued. I want to keep them as light as possible so wish there was another Ti option. What is everyone going to use? Are the KT's actually much heavier?
