I wish I had seen this earlier so I am sorry for the late posting. It is best not to snip the tip down. Splicing or scarfing takes some skill and you should get plenty of practice before applying the technique to a customer's rod. The easiest and perhaps the best way to fix the tip section is to very meticulously place sewing needles under every single splinter. You need to lift every single one,

Really shop around for the deals. It may be difficult if not impossible to test drive them so you may have to settle on advertising and word of mouth. I started off with a simple wooden hand wrapper that you can buy for cheap or build yourself with instructions from the library link above. After I was sure that this was a real hobby for me and not some flash in the pan I went out and bought th

I own both of these reels in the 3/4 sizes. They are indeed very sweet, but I have found that they just dont hold a lick of backing. The President was so tight that I had to trim off a few feet of my line just to be sure the spool didn't chaffe the line. I only fish for trout and the only fish big enough to test my skills was an 18" fat rainbow. I reeled him in before he could even touch

What I am looking for is to put some distance between me and some ultra selective trout who can very easily see me and everything I am doing because one can only cast so far so well with a light line. I have spooked some on 3 and four weights, even with long tippits. I need it for delicacy with distance.

I went back to look and I guess my eyes decieved me originally. Orvis announced an 8ft version of their one weight in the Trident TL series. I have a soft spot for science and innovation though and I have to say that what may not seem normal or possible based on past experience will be possible one day. Scientists thought that the atomic bomb was a big goose chase and same with putting man i

I just happened to notice this intriguing blank on Dan's site and was wondering if anybody has fished with this blank? I built one of the 6'10" one weights and love it for small mountain streams, but the 9 footer would never clear the trees. I am thinking of using it on some Pennsylvania limestone spring creeks where the water runs gin clear and presentation is extremely technical. At 9

I have a Batson power wrapper and enjoy using it. I cannot compare it to any others since it is the only power wrapper I have ever used. It does just fine for me for turning grips and wrapping.

Dan will likely have them for sale within the next 4 weeks or so according to earlier posts. Personally I think he is worth the wait. The best thing to do is give him a call for an estimate. His Five Rivers blanks are sweet and a bargain.

Mike, I am going to take a wild stab and say he has several reserved for warranty repair. My understanding is that this is industry standard practice. If a supplier warrants the blanks and does eventually run out then they usually reserve the right to replace it. The Sig V's are still a fairly new line so I imagine that he had to reserve a few more of his stock due to the very sudden discon

Well then I think I may be giving you a call in a few weeks. I could use a 5 weight and was eyeballing your sig V's

Since I only build a rod every month or two for myself I am not looking at profit margins, but if I were to add up the cost of the rod and compare what I would have spent at a retail fly rod maker then I know that I have still saved a lot not to mention any customizations and improvements I might accomplish. I liken this to fly tying material. I can cut corners and buy cheaper hooks and hackle,

This reel seat is perfectly round and the diameter is too large to squeeze a reel between the slidebands. Should I take the diameter down slightly or should I make a flattened section for the reel seat? I have seen Orvis flatten them out on their Superfine series. I am just leary on how to go about it. The picture REC gives looks exactly like the one I received and judging from the picture th

In all fairness... All metals rust or oxidize in one for or another. Some are obviously more prone to it than others. Titanium coatings can fail and that may present a place of entry for rust. I have a swiss arm knife that I found after forgetting in a tackle box for 15 years and it has rust on it. It happens. I have seen rust on aluminum. It is white and chalky. Aircraft maintenance manua

I just ordered my 6'10" from Dan the other day. He helped me pick out some appropriate parts to finish the rod that he had on hand. I figure who knows the rod better? As far as the reel goes I am having some difficulty choosing. I think when I have the money I will settle on the Sage 3000. The magnesium Forbes reel looks tempting, but how well will it hold up? I went with Orvis Wonderl

I bought my spatulas from @#$%& a few weeks ago. I have not used them yet and figured I would just have to experiment. Thanks for the tip to the link for the tutorial and more importantly thanks to Joe for the excellent tutorial!
