I'd consider making some tight-ish masking tape arbors that will hold the grip/seat/butt and move them around to what feels right to you. As above, base it on a rod you like then tweak it a little to test other spacing.

With reference to all of the above, I recently measured twice, then messed up the cut. Once I filed it flat, it was too short. So… measure in a little error factor…

David Sytsma- for what it's worth... You're right to be concerned about this issue, but if I were your customer and you were as forthright and responsive as you appear to be in your post, you're building your reputation- not hurting it. Hang in there...

I am starting another build, and realizing that keeping track of what components I've used before and my likes and dislikes will be useful. I'm just starting with a simple excel workbook, listing components, clipping and pasting images of components I've ordered, etc. It'll likely do it for me, but I'm thinking with this group, there are some interesting and efficient systems out there.

I am building a 9ft 8wt, dark green blank. A couple of commercially built rods around the house have standard wraps using tiger thread, which I think looks pretty good. I know there's a distinction between a wrap with tiger thread, and what appears to be called a tiger wrap. A tiger wrap is not something I'm shooting for. I bought some Pro Wrap Tiger Thread in green, black, and tan. I t

I live in a beach community, and occasionally find a rod that's been set out for trash. Most recently I found a Penn Sabre Rod, not in bad shape, with open, v-shaped wire guides and a roller tip top. It also has an odd (to me, the rod is clearly for offshore use and I don't do that much at all) butt end with a deep crossing fitting, clearly made to fit a rod holder of some sort. I was go

I did a little searching, and find Elmer's wood filler paste as the most returned answer. Does the board have preferences or suggestions? I searched the board without success, perhaps chose the wrong words. Many thanks-

I'm replacing the cork grip on a 4 piece 8wt. After building a few rods and doing a little research, I think I can make it work. The cork I'm replacing finally gave up after about 10 years of pretty regular saltwater use, and a lot of wading and paddleboard use, so it was wet and in the sun a lot. It holding up so well made me think about cork quality as I look for a replacement. I'm gue

I was ready to use tape for an arbor, started to do a little research and found that tape arbors have to a degree fallen out of favor. No problem, figured I'd try a foam arbor. My reel seat I.D. is just under 14mm, and I don't seem to be able to find an arbor with that O.D. There are plenty of larger sizes available. What's the best way to proceed, just turn one down? Or am I just l

I agree with the kit suggestion. It’s how I started (and I’m not all that experienced now). It’s nice to have the components arrive all at once, and helped me research/ask questions about how it all fit together. It’s a fun process, you can’t go wrong either way. This board is fantastic- All the best -

This is a timely topic for me. I throw topwaters (Super Spook down to SS Jr. sizes) almost always with a baitcaster. I acquired a nice spinning rod, threw a reel on it, and have enjoyed using it for soft plastics. I'd like to try a spinning rod more for topwaters. The way I work topwaters with the spinning rod makes the butt end of the rod hit me on the underside of my arm, mid-forearm,

I'm starting to build an 8wt, the fighting butt of course needs to be reamed. I'm trying to think through the best way to carry that out... Chuck up a reamer in a drill and just take my time? Any suggestions? Many thanks! Tom

I just finished sort of a rebuild. I built a 9' 5wt for my wife, and really did not like the quality of the workmanship. Over the past few months I removed the guides and wraps and reassembled the rod. I epoxied the wraps last night, and just got off a work zoom call. I took a little break and took the rod outside into the sun to see what I had. it's- by my standard, just a rod to f

This is not exactly on point, but... I ate some barbecue and drank a couple of Bloody Marys just this Saturday with a guy who worked on a test program with the goal of imbedding sensors in and along the carbon fiber blades of wind turbines to gauge flex and stress (and I'm sure other factors) to anticipate needed maintenance and avoid unnecessary maintenance. I don't have a technical backg

I guess I’ll mention guide foot adhesive- I tried it again after watching a Flex Coat video- seems to work pretty well. I took care to make sure the guide feet laid flat on the blank, then after pressing the foot down slid my finger off the guide straight down the blank, rather than lifting my finger off. I don’t have the experience with super tiny guides, however.

The days are longer and I've picked up a project to finish. I like to have my wrap widths for each guide foot somewhat uniform, about 9mm on the rod I'm working on right now (4 piece 5 weight) I have calipers of course, and a piece of thick paper cut to that size that I use as a quick reference. I'm just curious who's got tips or tricks get that that uniformity. I'm assuming there's a g
