1. Kodiak Rods
Has anyone ever heard of Kodiak brand flyrods? I came across one at a flea market recently. It was a 7 foot, 2 piece, 5 weight graphite rod. Seemed like a nice little rod but I've never come across that brand before. A Google search brought up a post on another forum in which a person thought they were made in Michagen back in the 1970's.

Well, I just did a search (should have done that first) and see it was mailed April 2 so I guess mine got lost. How does one e-mail Tom directly? I've looked all over this site and cannot find a link to e-mail him directly.
Thanks

I've not received issue 10-2 yet and was wondering how long ago it was sent out. Has everyone gotten theirs?
Thanks

Mary Lou,
I also live in Missouri and fish the trout parks a lot which is probably where your brother will be doing most of his fishing. For the parks I would suggest you go with an 8 to 9 foot five weight rod. I think he would find that quite satisfactory.

I recently asked the same question. This morning I heard there were a few being sold by a tackle shop on @#$%&.

Sage has discontinued their XP rods and a number of shops are selling leftover stocks at a pretty good discount. I was wondering if anyone is discounting blanks. I'm particularly interested in the 9 foot 6 weight. I'm hoping to make the Expo this year perhaps someone will have some there.
Thanks

Well, I booked a room at the Econolodge located 5 blocks from the show. It is mentioned in the list on the Expo post. Rate was reasonable at $53/night for two people.
Has anyone ever stayed there? Wondered how it is.
By the way, the Atrium Inn listed on the Expo web site is sky high. Rooms ranged from $160 to $260 a night. Rather spend that on blanks, reel seats and other goodies.

I'm thinking of attending the Feb Expo if I can work it out and wondered if anyone could offer any info on the other motels (other than the Radisson) mentioned on the Expo website. Curious as to their cost and quality.
Thanks

Speaking of George Herter, there was an interesting article on him in the latest issue of Field&Stream magazine. He was quite a character. I still have one of his 1976 catalogs and several of his books including the one Tom mentioned above.

Does anyone know of a solvent for removing cured epoxy from metal. Would Acetone work?
Thanks

Ed,
I forgot to mention that the description also said it was hollow fiberglass construction. Probably a sweet rod. A lot of people collect old fiberglass rods so it might be worth some money. You might check out the ez-board fiberglass rod web site for more info on it.

Ed,
My 1976 catalog has that rod listed. It is described as an 8-1/2 foot, 6-1/2 oz. dry fly rod that is 2 piece with 5 guides. It takes a 7 wt line. Color was stated as buckskin with red wraps with chrome V-frame guides. It sold for $10.37.
I was in a Herter's store in Waseca,Mn back in the late 60's. It was a fascinating place with hundreds of stuffed fish and animals. I've heard

I have a 1976 Herter's catalog. If I find anything on that rod I'll get back to you.

Tim has some DVD's posted on the buy/sell page for sale and I have tried e-mailing him twice to buy one but have had no responses. Thought I would post a message here and perhaps he will see it.

I used the cork handle from Jann's that Jeff referred to and was quite pleased with it. I used it on a 6 ft 6 in 2 wt Pac Bay blank along with single foot guides.

Thanks guys. I guess it's a Pac Bay blank, which is ok as I have made other rods on the Pac Bay blanks and was pleased with the outcome.

I recently picked up a used custom made rod at a flyfishing show and wonder what blank was really used. The seller said it was made on a Tiger Eye blank but the color looks exactly like a Pac Bay Tradition as it is a plum color rather than the sort of bright golden tan/brownish color of a recent Tiger Eye blank I bought.
My question is: were older Tiger Eye blanks a plum color?
Thanks

Can someone recommend a good, but not overly expensive, fast action 5 weight, 8 1/2 foot flyrod blank? I'm interested in something that is fairly fast action.
Thanks

Frantz, I was like you and thought the ERN was indicative of the optimum line weight to use if you had around 30 feet of line in the air. Apparently not. As Tom says, I guess the best way to use the data is to test some of the rods you already have and then go to Dr. H's web site and see if a blank you are considering buying is listed and then see if the numbers match up.

I have one of the older blanks that I haven't worked up yet. I can't decide what color it is. I can take it outside in the sunlight and swear that one section looks blue and the other section looks green. The problem is-what color thread do I use?

I was thinking of using a piece of thin wall PVC pipe to make a simple rod case for a 9 ft 6 in rod I recently made and was wondering if anyone had played around with one of these tubes to "dress it up".
My first thought was to merely paint it but not sure if the paint would adhere to it. Has anyone tried this and,if so, what kind of paint did you use? Also, any other ideas. Another

Bailey,
One thing I did on a flyrod was to take the button that fits into the butt of the reel seat to a local jewerly store (before gluing it in) and having them engrave it with the rod length and weight. Obviously not enough room for info on maker and date but it was my rod so I didn't need that on it anyway.
On a spinning rod I made last year I found an old cuff link and cut the tab off

I seem to recall from somewhere that you should wait several days after applying the epoxy thread coating before you attempt to use the rod. The reason was that it took several days for a full cure of the epoxy and that any premature flexing could cause the coating to crack. Any thoughts out there on this?
Thanks
