Herb, As best I recall I purchased everything for this rod build, except the guides, from The Anglers' Roost, a sponsor of this site. The blanks are UHM12 (ultra-high modulus) 2-3 wt, 4 pc. These blanks are still available on the site for about $80.00. I did not buy a "kit" for this rod, but wandered through Anglers' Roost web site buying the reel seat, seat insert, cork handle, et

A few years back I built a 12' 4 piece 2-3 wt fly rod using components I purchased from The Angler's Roost including the blanks. There was some time between this rod build and two or three others that I built, so--I wasn't quite "on my game" with this rod. Structurally the rod is strong and fun to cast and otherwise fish, but I might have done better with the Threadmaster application

You hit it Daniel. The problem wraps were lonnng ones. I'll have to be more careful in the future though I doubt I'll make such long wraps on any future rod I might build.

Bill, Stupid me. I was shocked to see that Jann's is not a sponsor. Since they are "out of stock" on the Fugi handle, you bet I'll check out the sponsors on the left. Thanks, for bringing this to my attention.

I'm thinking of building a 10', 4 pc, 4/5 wt fly rod using blanks from the Angler's Roost. I'd like to install a Fugi concealed hood spinning reel handle (as sold by Jann's Netcraft), cutting off the rear of the handle at least the 3-4 inch length of a standard fly rod reel seat, installing the same on the rear of the cut-down handle, thus making a "spin-fly" rod. Is this feasible? H

Gulp!!! I did use Thread Master, not Thread "Maker." No wonder I had problems! Thanks for your input.

A few years ago I built a 2/3 wt 12' fly rod using blanks I purchased from the Angler's Roost ( a very good outfit by the way). The rod turned out fine except for two finish blemishes resulting from my clumsy application of covering the wraps on the butt section with Thread-Maker. The first and longest wrap holding the hook-keeper has a "wavey" application of Thread-Maker. How can th

I want to thank all who replied here. I printed out all the responses to assist me in the building of this rod. I now have all the information I need to make this a successful build.

Roger, I agree with you 17 guides is probably over the top. I have two guides on the butt section, five on the second section, four on the third section and six on the tip section (Guide sizes:-,4,2,2). The blanks were purchased from Angler's Roost and is a four piece 2/3 wt fly rod. I probably will build the rod for use on medium size mountain rivers (California) for trout using the so-calle

I'm currently building a 12 foot fly rod that has 17 guides. I admit to feeling a little lazy about wrapping so many guides, so I'm curious as to whether anyone has "super-glued" guides to a fly rod or long spinning rod WITHOUT wrapping the guides and then FISHED the rod. If so, how did it work out, assuming that fish were actually caught on such a rod? I'll probably end up wrapping

Hi, An acquaintance just gave me a Berkley spin/fly rod. It is obviously fiberglass, in good condition, and has a nice soft action. The rod specs are: 7'0'', five pieces, model no. B5C-7Ft, and is called the "Buccneer." What can anyone tell me about this rod, a.e. age, popularity, useability, value, etc.? It seems to be "stuck" in the flyrod position as I think a piece

Hey, what's the best way to apply ThreadMaster II to rod-thread wraps without getting a gazillion tiny bubbles in the application?

Any advice on how to tie a decent trim wrap using metallic thread (five to eight turns)? I had no problem doing the main wraps on the guides (silver) but am having a devil of a time with the trim wraps (gold). I got the thread from Jann's Netcraft along with a set of blanks, guides, etc. Rod is turning out great but for this situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I appreciate the input from everyone. Tom's reply makes the most sense to me given where I am in the game at this point. As I get more experienced and better at casting, then maybe I can step it up a weight or two. I'll hang onto the line I just bought, which is a 9wt, but I will defintely tie on a 7 wt 250 grain for now and throw that into the surf for a while. Pat

What grain weight sink tip is good for use on a Dan Craft 4 pc 7-8wt 9' FT for fishing the surf? I'd like to be able to shoot line 50-75' without a lot of fan fare!

I just finished building a Dan Craft 9' 7wt 4pc fly rod with the assistance of a professional rod builder. The rod is beautiful. I went to the fly shop I usually go to and brought the rod in. The manager loaded a Rio 26' high density sink tip on to my new Okuma 7/8 reel. He did not assemble the rod and try it out with the new line. Regretably, I failed to take the box the line came in home w

Thanks for your imput Larry. I have a very recently overhauled 7' Garcia fiberglass spinning rod that I like to use. I have had this rod for about 43 years. Its action at the tip is soft, and it casts small lures very well. I hope this California Tackle rod will be as nice when casting 14-18 size dries. I will definitely need a heavier reel to balance this outfit and I'll certainly get a syl

I seem to keep coming up with more rods that I thought I had! I found an 8' 3pc bamboo hexagonal rod that belonged to my late father-in-law. Unfortunately, my wife's uncles and a cousin who would know about these things are deceased. There are no markings whatsoever on this rod. It is nicely wrapped, the craftsmanship is generally good, the blanks are well made, and ferrules are quality mat

I recently rediscovered an old fiberglass fly rod that a former coleague of mine gave me about 25 years ago when I was just starting into fly fishing. I have never used the rod; I never even "strung it up" to see how it would cast, etc.. I tried the rod. The balance with a "standard" 3.25" milled aluminum reel is bad. The rod is heavy, and the action quite slow, but i

I can't believe my luck. I "discovered" these guides while browsing the internet sites sponsored by Rodbuilding.Org looking for appropriate guides to fit onto my elderly (45 years old and counting) Garcia 7 foot light action fiber glass spinning rod. I thought that these guides would do the trick since I noted that they are used on Abu Garcia rods. I have the old guides which are OK,

Some time ago I vaguely recall some posts about what to use for making a good wading staff for wading in rivers for trout. I can't fine the thread. Anyway, from those who know, what material or items can be used to make a good wading staff? I have used a modified ski pole with a modicum of success, but I bet there are better objects to use than an old ski pole.

Hi Folks, It's been a while, but I'm back into the game. I want to build a good performing 7 wt fly rod for surf perch fishing in the California coast between Monterey and Santa Cruz. I have some specifics in mind as follows: 1. 9' - 10' length 2. 3-4 sections 3. graphite or s-glass 4. non-cork grip 5. to be used primarily for surf fishing, and secondarily for stripers (surf and inl

I just completed my first rod in 30 years. I intend to use U-40 Permagloss for the final finish on the color-locked guide and ferrule wraps. I don't intend to finish the exposed blank sections. My question: What should/can I use to clean the applicator brush between coats? I understand that I may have to put on five coats to completely cover the threads. I don't have any U-40 brush cleaner

I just received all my "stuff" from Mud Hole needed to build my St. Croix 3 piece blank [2S70MF-3] into what I hope will be an all-around good light "in-shore" surf rod for perch, etc.. My question: I bought EVA fore and rear grips that are a) a little too thick around for my hand, and b) a little too long (both.) I intend to gussie-up the rod a little with 1/4 inch round p

Greetings from the great wet west: I just received all my "stuff" to assemble a three piece St. Croix spinning rod blank (2S703MF) touted as a "trout, panfish, walleye" rod. This rod is different from others I/ve seen. The separate pieces slide over each other in cone or telescoping fashion. The wall thickness on each end simply overlaps the plug or male end. The rod do

Say Everyone, I see that there is a great sale going on at a retailers closing out last-year's blanks for Rain Shadow and Forecast blanks. I am tempted to purchase some sets to build rods for members of my family (fly rods and light spinning rods.) Two problems though before I leap: 1) What is the general consensus (if any) as to the quality of these blanks? 2) Being rather

Hi folks: I'm looking to build my first rod after nearly thirty years when I build an 8' S-Glass fly rod. The new rod will be built on a 3 piece St. Croix telescoping blanks for a 7' spinning rod I intend to use for fishing the surf along the Monterey, CA coast. I need to know if high grade balsa, turned and sanded and center-bored, etc., is acceptable for making arbors for the reel seats
