Thanks for the quick reply Tom. So then if the tip top was treated as the choker I should only use a max of 4 reduction guides. That seems like way too few! Using the tip too as the choker, how many reduction guides should I be using (pending static testing of course)?
Side note on static testing a spinning reel this large, I’m assuming I position the bail in the “mid position”? Positioning

I’m building a Rainshadow RCKJB600-250 blank to be used with a Shimano Saragosa 8000 spinning reel for tuna, so its going to see some stress. When I attempt to use the “New Concept” for guide placement on this 6’6” rod I wind up past the tip top for the choker. My question is how do you determine guide placement for a 61mm diameter reel spool on a shorter rod? Or is there another method I should

Thanks for the quick and detailed reply. Makes sense. I think thats probably the cleanest look. I’ll have to measure the OD off one of the forecast grips I have made in the past. Much appreciated

I'm taking a stab at making my first set of customer carbon fiber grips using the CFX kit from mudhole. I'm making a split grip for a casting rod, and my question comes in on how is everyone finishing the butt end of the split grip as there will be a not insignificant hole from the ferrule.? Are you just using metal or EVA butt caps, or doing some sort of inlay that you're epoxing in place? An

Thanks for all the suggestions. I’m going to have to give a few of these a try. I was intrigued by Taipan blanks as well, but haven’t had much luck getting my hands on one to build.
Anyone have any first hand experience or thoughts on how sensitive one blank is vs another without me building and fishing them?

Looking to build a few new casting rods over the winter and thought Id reach out for some suggestions other than whats become a recent favorite blank. I’m looking for a Medium Power - Extra Fast Action Blank capable of handling 10-12lb line and is roughly 6’8” in length. Lure rating around a 1/2 oz. Will be used for jigging stripers, but looking for something closer to a smallmouth setup than an

Hey guys,
So in looking for s little wisdom here. I'm relatively new to rod building and decided to tackle my first standup rod. I chose to marble the under wraps and double wrap navy thread on top of them to hold my guides in place. Anyways the rod came out great EXCEPT I bumped my roller stripper when I was epoxing everything. Like an idiot I assume I didn't knock it out of alignment but sure

So I'm getting ready to undertake my first Standup rod build and thought I'd tap into the knowledge of this board. I'm looking to pair the rod with an Avet 50EXW for yellowfin, bluefin, Sharks, and mahi in the Atlantic off of Maryland. We fish wind on leaders with windon swivels so I'm planning to use all rollers. Up until this point I've only built light weight jigging & topwater rods for fi

Tom - thanks for pointing me in the direction of those issues. Exactly what I was looking for! Also some useful info on Riley's site although can't seem to view most of the content. Not sure what's going on there?
You mentioned carbon skinning? What's involved with that process??
Don- thanks for the Intel on Mike at Riley Rods. Will be giving him a call once I figure out what I'm looking

I'm looking to build my first graphite handle for a spinning rod. I'm not looking to not break the bank on this project, but am drawn to the increased sensitivity and light weight of these grips. That said, anyone have any experience building them and have any insight on the do's / dont's and best parts to use?
I've looked at the Tenessee style tubes as maybe a first attempt, and they look pr

Randy - Thanks for the insight. I'll be sure to keep those guides consistent, and only adjust the other guides according to static testing.
Don - I'm looking at an LS7 8-14lb blank and will be building a spinning rod (2500 series reel). However, I'm not set in stone on the blank and open to suggestions. I tend to try and keep my gear on the lighter side when possible.
Thanks for the

I'm new to rod building and the forum, and looking for some advice from wealth of knowledge on this board. Ever since casting one of my friends top water rods with Microwave guides, I've been itching to build one of my own. That said, given the options of AirWave Nanolite, Duralite, and the titanium TidalWave guides I'm leaning towards the latter given that I fish brackish water for stripers, b
