Thank you,
I’m going to look into the 20 & 25 options.
Shame I can’t find anything here in the UK.

Thank you.
Yes, spinning reel.
I’ll look into the 20mm set.

I'd be grateful of some advise regarding microwave guides on a rod I'm about to build.
The rod will be used on small ponds to catch carp between 4-15lbs.
I will be free lining very light baits that weight roughly 1g, using a fixed spool reel and lightish braid.
Casting distance is very important, as I'll only have 1g on the line.
I'm considering the American Tackle Microwave guide system.

I started this thread 5 years ago, and bought the blank shortly after, but life got in the way of me building it.
I now want to buy the rest of the components to complete the build, and would like to get in touch with Joseph Arvay, who I believe from his posts in this thread understood and had experience with the rod I aim to build.
Is there any way to send him a private message?
Thanks

I know this is an old thread, but I'm considering the microwave guides for my first rod build and had a few questions.
1. How many guides did you use on a 10' rod?
2. If I was advised to use sizes 17-7mm conventional guides, should I also aim to use the same size microwave guides?
3. Does anyone know of a UK supplier?
Thanks

Thanks Joseph,
I agree, carp rods are definitely out of the question. The float, ledger and lure rod I've used so far would be a better option over a carp rod.
Yes, I will be building the rod so that the blank feels balanced with the rest of the hardware, but may step up a tad with the guides. But not basket ball hoops like you say.

Hi Joseph,
By sloppy, I meant that the total through action may be too floppy and waggly for the job I intend to use it for. But that may just be my misconception of a fly rod as I've not held one for 25 years.
I honestly don't know, because I'm inexperienced in rod blanks.
I have an idea in mind how I want the rod to feel and cope, but have no idea where to go from there.
I'm not sure

Thanks Joseph.
I contacted 2 blank dealers this morning, both have recommended against using a fly blank, and have suggested stalking rods with a test curve between 1.75 - 2.5lbs.
Having no experience in this is awkward, as I don't want to buy something that isn't going to be right for me, and I won't be able to try it until it's built.
My feeling is the blanks the dealers have recommended

Thanks again Joseph!
I've started looking at 2 hand fly rods, and I'm going to see if there's anyone local with a few fly rods I can have a waggle of.
Much appreciated
Dave
EDIT: One thing I've noticed about the two hand fly rods, is that the reel seat would be in an awkward position for me. Would it affect the action of the rod if the reel seat were placed further up, so that the but o

Thanks Gene,
What kind of action would that type of rod have?

Thanks for the info and links Roger.
What type of blank would you say would be suitable for my needs?
What kind of action would be perfect for setting the hook, as well as perfect for casting light weights?
Like I mentioned in my original post, I don't know much about rods, but I do know that having the right one for the job makes all the difference.
I mainly fish with lures. I only hav

Thanks Roger,
I bought a rod a few weeks ago hoping it would work well after reading reviews.
It's a Maver Abyss X 10ft match rod.
Out of all the rods I've tried this was the worst regarding casting distance, I'm guessing because of the guides and tip eye being too small, even though I was only using 6lb mono and the rod was rated to 6lbs.
On the other hand, it was the best on the strike

Hi John, No, would a steelhead blank be suitable for my needs?
Any blank in particular?
Thanks

Hi, this is my first post on the forum.
During the warmer months I enjoy free lining for carp on the surface of a couple of small local ponds.
The fish range between 4-15lbs.
I've tried 4 different commercial rods so far, none have been great.
I don't know much about rods, but I'd like to have a go at building one that is perfectly suited to this job.
This is what I'm looking for.
