There has been a lot of talk recently about these brands of threads and that one can go into their local sewing/fabric store to buy them. My question is, which ones work well for wrapping guides? Can you just go pick one of the shelf and use it? Or do each one of these brands have specific products that will work for rod building? Thanks for the help.

Stan, I have built rods using the forecast, rainshadow RX7, and St. Croix SCIII blanks. I believe each one fits what your looking for. I'm in the process of building a St. Croix 8 1/2 ft. 5wt 4piece. The new color is much nicer than the old one and it fits what you are looking for as far as ccs data. Good luck. Joe

They also sell is it at Hobby Lobby or Micheals Crafts if you have either of those in your area. If not try other craft type stores.

Ole, I would look at the Forecast Blanks, they are great blank at very reasonable price. 7.5' or 8' would be a good length to start in a 4wt. They would be a good all around rod for trout, bass and pan fish. Check out Hook and Hackle, they have kits at great prices. Have fun.

Antti, I've used acrylic inserts that Dave Winslow of Winslow Rods makes and sells on @#$%&. You could drill these out to fit fairly large diamater blanks. I used one on a six weight. Do a web search for Dave Winslow rods and you can contact him and ask him about the inserts he makes. Joe

Thanks Tom and Rob. When you look a these rods there is a difference in wt. and even butt size but I guess because its slight that most of couldn't tell the difference. I'm sure with the technology these days they can design them to be pretty precise. The only place then we can realy see the difference is $. Yikes. JOE

I had someone ask me recently if there was a difference in action between 2 pc. and 3, 4 or 5 pc rod that are the same model length and weight. I honestly don't know so I decided to find out. I did a search and found a thread from last summer that breifly touched on the subject. I also went to CCS data site to see if I could dig up anything there. For rods that were in CCS site that were same mod

Don & Bob I agree with both of you. My shortest fly rod is 6.5 and I can't imagine going shorter. But this rod isn't for me, the person its for is bound and determined to have very short fly rod. So, if he really wants one and knows that it may not cast that well than I will make him one. Joe

Hi all, I have someone who wants me to build them a 4 to 4.5' fly rod. I haven't been able to find any blanks that size. I was wonder if anyone has ever built one that small and if so how did you do it. Some ideas I had were to use an 1 piece ultralite spinning blank and cut it to size. Or to take a 9' fly blank and only use to tip. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks. Joe

Does the reel fit tightly in the seat when tightened? If so it is probably just fine. Joe

Try the rainshadow RX7, they are about half the price of the St. Croix SCIII blank and I believe just as good a blank. I have two rods built on these blanks and I realy like them. Joe

Check out the rainshadow RX7. I have one and I love it, great action, roll casts nicely. I fish alot of small brush lined creeks in Wisconsin and Michigan and its wonderful. I would recommend it over the RX6. Joe

Tom, Not sure what you mean by eggshell effect. What I have looks like the finish didn't completly cover over some spots. There aren't pits or holesIt was the 3rd coat and it was 24 hours from the 1st coat.

I agree with Emory and the other thing to think about is the warranty. The H&H has a limited lifetime warranty, the forecast is a two year. I have built rods with both of these blanks and are both decent but again it depends on what you will use them for. If money isn't an issue go for the H&H. Joe

I'm in the process of building my 3rd and 4th rods. Each time I wrap a rod it goes well entil I get to the tip then wrapping is more difficult because the tip of the rod isn't braced and its flimsly compared to the butt. Consiquently my wraps at the tip don't look as well as the ones at the butt. Does anyone have tips wrapping for wrapping the tip end of the rod? Thanks for the help. Joe P.

Ray, I have two H&H IM6 rods and they are very nice for the money. I don't know much about the matrix but I think it is a slower action than the IM6. Also, the warranties are very different, the IM6 is limited lifetime and the matrix is a 2 year. Hope this helps. Joe

I've built two fly rods and now I'm going to try my hand at a spinning rod. When putting on the grips and reel seat does one first put the rear grip then the reel seat and finaly the fore grip or is their another way. Thanks for the help. Joe

Mike, I also had a problem with ink smearing and I use perma-gloss as well. Someone on this board suggested using Kryopn workable fixative. I use paint pens and it stopped the smearing. You can buy it at hobby shops. Good luck. Joe

I'm going to be ordering another blank and I'm trying to decide what color threads to use. The blank is described as a dark redish brown (plum). I will do two colors but I'm having difficulty deciding which two colors. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thanks. Joe
