For clean, precise cuts nothing beats a razor saw in a miter box. The original application for them is for cutting wood strips to length in building flying model airplanes. The saw has a 5 inch by 1 1/2 inch blade which is only 0.01 inch thick (that is 0.28 mm) and has very very fine teeth. The miter box is an aluminum channel 5 1/2 inches long by 1 1/2 inches wide and lets you do 90 and 45 de

The current issue of The Canadian Fly Fisher magazine has a short article saying that Gudebrod will no longer be making fly tying materials.

If you have only a few cuts to make, then you can get a hobby miter box and a razor saw. Any store selling supplies for building remote control airplanes will have them. I forgot what I paid for mine but it was about $20 for the set. The saw will will dull fairly quickly but it is cheap to replace. The cut made with the razor saw is very, very narrow and the little dust which is produced is n

Lucite/perspex/plexiglass rods of larger sizes can usually be obtained locally through industrial plactic suppliers. My local supplier, for example has rods up to 1" in stock. Larger sizes and black colour rods are special order. For turning, you want to use cast rods, not extruded. Jan

I don't know whats going on at Rocky but I can tell you about my experience. I ordered a number of items from them over a year ago, they shipped what they had in stock ... and forgat all about the remaining (and paid for) items which included RX7+ blank and a nickel silver seat. After straightening everything out, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and placed a second order with them. Unfort

That is indeed a very nice logo. It has an artistic feel to it which matches its intended use. You would not see a logo of this type on a factory made rod. I would suggest that you print it out with an inkjet printer on an acetate transparency sheet ( for overhead projectors ) in the sizes that you intend to use. You can wrap the acetate around a blank and see how the finished decals will l

Robert, the $25 fee is on top of the shipping charge and is proportional to the declared value of the shipment so it may be higher or lower. My main problem with this fee is that I pay for shipping first to the dealer, and then a brokerage fee to the courier on delivery. The brokerage fee is not disclosed at the time of the purchase because it has nothing to do with the seller, so the seller i

It says on Mud Hole's website that they will reluctantly ship international orders via Air Parcel Post if specifically requested by the customer. Apparently they had some problems with this method of shipment. Myself, I'd be glad to take the risk rather than to be hit with another ridiculous $25 "customs brokerage fee" for items which are duty free! Jan from Edmonton

You could also have your logo made in rubber at a rubber stamp company and then glue it into the recess of the butt cap.

When you are looking for the blank, keep in mind that 4'-6" happens to be the length of the tip section of an average 9' two-piece fly rod. You can then use the bottom section to make reamers or practicing guide wraps etc.

There is a product called varnish preserver. It is basically compressed nitrogen gas in a spray can. You spray it into a can of varnish to remove oxygen from the can before closing the lid. I have never used it, but I have a hunch that it could be used to blow moist air out of a permagloss filled can. Naturally it also should work great with Tru-oil, spar varnish etc. I think I'll pick up a

Well, the inks that we are talking about will spread more on the blank than they will on paper so it is best to use a dip pen nib with as fine a point as practical. A decent art supplies store should have Speedball C-6 nibs which will work pretty good. These nibs have a brass ink reservoir on them which you can bend to regulate the ink flow. You should probably start experimenting with this n

Fountain pen inks are dye based. A dye dissolves completely in water producing a very well flowing ink which will unfortunately fade when exposed to daylight. For rod building we should choose inks which will not fade over time, and this means using pigmented inks. Pigments are solid particles, in many cases finely powdered minerals, and they will clog up the feed of most fountain pens. If t

Rob, I collect fountain pens and play a little with calligraphy so if you post what you intend to use the pen for then I can suggest a specific model you should be looking for. Fountain pens are not tools, but fine instruments. They often have very specialized applications and can be tuned to fit the needs of the user - just like custom built rods. Jan

Another good sourse for plastic trim rings are old vinyl records. Everybody is familiar with black vinyl records, but during the 1980's some records have been pressed in transparent vinyl. A couple of weeks ago I was in my local antique's mall ( in Edmonton, Canada :) ) and have seen them in clear, red, burgundy, pink, purple, and many shades of blue. Look for records with colours in the ti

You can buy a drill press stand for the Dremel. The stand allows you to mount the tool vertically for drilling and contour sanding, or horizontally as a sort of mini bench grinder. The top of the stand has a hook so you can hang the tool from it whan using the flex-shaft attachment. If I recall correctly, the stand is Dremel's most expensive accessory but probably the most usefull one.

Some scale model makers make markings for their models by first inkjet printing the design on regular printer paper and then photocopying it onto a blank decal sheet. The decal sheet is taped on all four sides to a sheet of copier paper so that it is the right size to be run through the machine. The graphite toner used in photocopiers will never ever, ever fade. It will literally last forever.
