google "fade wrap rod building" first image is a pattern I keep track of it on a graph sheet so I don't lose track. It is also in Rodmaker in one of the past issues, in Billy Vivona's book, probably lots of other places also

using coasters, you can cast with the reel in the low position and then move it higher for fishing and hopefully catching. never tried to catch anything with the reel down low and usually only really need long distance casting when the pompano are further off the shore.

I use the blue painters tape to get the diameter of the blank where my cork tape wrap starts. I then use that piece laid on the cork tape to get my angle for the wrap. I lay the blue tape at an angle starting at the corner of the end of the cork tape. that corner to where the blue tape end lays on the opposite side gives the angle of the wrap. This probably doesn't make as much sense as just

As you know, Billy's shade packs are Madeira and need Cp. After doing a dec wrap, The tie off was done with prowrap and I've used the madeira from the shade pack as an inlay. The whole thing gets Cp so it is not a big deal I think to mix the two. Did not seem to cause me problems

Cameron, I primarily surf fish and this lead to me building primarily surf rods for the couple years I have been building my own rods. here is my 2 cents. Guides - I seem to be going more to Fuji. I have used there BVSLG and like them and they are a good price. I find myself going to Alconites more though and don't mind the extra price. I usually put double foots all the way up the rod. Of

Fred, Would you care to elaborate? What is "very obvious"? I have only been doing this for a couple of years but it seems to me innovation and creativity abound. Thanks.

You need to get him to be more specific on what he needs for a surf rod. My drum rod and my pompano rod are pretty different in capabilities. What are his intended species, method of fishing, etc. Good Luck.

When I build my surf rods I consider the following when choosing guides. What weight will I be casting What line diameter What Shock Leader diameter (the guides needs to be able to pass the knot) Heavier rods I stick with double foot all the way Lighter rods I transition from double foot to single foot. So, it really comes down to what your primary purpose for the rod is.

I typically use Mod-Fast. The two most recent builds I did for this type of fishing were Rainshadows (SUR1385 and 1386) but they were discontinued. Good Luck.

Phil, Fair enough. just a thought on why some people may not be inclined to post a thank you. (i intended to state, the time was not a waste for the person posting the thank you, but the person receiving it, thus taking the time to open a response to find a thank you) in the electronic world, it is common to not post a thank you to a question's reply. My point was only to express why someone

It is generally considered poor ettiqette to reply to emails, etc. when the reply is a "thank you". it is viewed as wasting the time of the recipient. i don't like clicking on replies thinking there is an update to find a "thank you". my point is, people may not see it as a lapse in courtesy, but actually the opposite. thanks to everyone for any info I've used, past, prese

you could look at the Gator Pomp-13 or the gator Pomp-light-13. They are less than $100. That's the only ones I can think of in that length without going considerably more expensive. I have not used them though. Ive been building a SUR1385 but it is shorter than you are looking for. Good Luck. I'd be interested what you find as I am going to build a longer pomp rod eventually, but havent de

Bill, In all fairness. I looked at your site (willierods.com). Probably best if Batson does not take website advice from you. You should probably get a 10 year old kid to help you out with your site design. Good luck. In the mean time...Batson has a nice new site. Keep it up Batson.

Russell, To do what you say use a Breakaway Saddle Clamp. Build the rod without a reel seat. Then use the saddle clamps to mount the reel where you want it. Low for distance casting, thumbing with your off hand and then move it higher for fish fighting.

What would a beginner distance caster look for in a rod? when you say they buy rods that are too powerful, how is this determined?

like Roger said. the ring dia. is listed in mm but the tube size is listed in 64ths of an inch. You would need to do conversions if you measure the rod tip in mm. I use one of those plastic tip top guages they sell. It's relatively accurate in determining the tube size I need without doing much math. You could also look for a conversion chart online and it would tell you the mm to inches. g
