Mel, Try alternating the heat with an ice bath. The hot and cold treatment helps with those stubborn epoxy removal jobs. It seems to be the temperature extremes rather than a sudden change, so change the temperature gradually. Ed

Similar story. I have a 9' 6 weight Matrix that is my favorite still water rod. I use it so much that I wore out one of the male ferrules. Called the American Tackle folks up to order a replacement section. I clearly told them that I wore it out and wanted to buy a replacement section. They sent out an entire replacement blank for no charge. Not even the postage. These are not isolated

Hello Sandra, A couple of thoughts. I gather you all enjoy driving? I might consider flying straight into Arizona and save the time and expense of driving there. You can see it all on the return trip back to the coast. It's a lot of desert, and after a few hours, it all looks the same. The central part of California is dominated by the Sierras. A very large mountain range that conta

Justin, Yes there is. w3.uwyo.edu/~metal/motors1.html It involves rewiring the motor internally, so be sure you know what you are doing. i.e. can be dangerous! Ed

I use the @#$%& tensioner on a Pac Bay wrapper. Pros. Thread goes directly from spool to rod. No thread damage with metalics and silks. Compact. Smooth Consistent tension Cons. No continuous fine adjustment of tension. Spool pulls over on long spools and high tension. Ed

Emory, Finite Element Analysis would allow us to perform about any static or dynamic analysis we might ever want to do. On the other hand, I'm reminded of the old joke from college. The one that starts with "a physicist, mathematician, engineer and a". . . . . . and ends with "because the engineer knows that he can get close enough for all practical purposes." On a ro

Emory, You are of course correct. The secondary line is intended to be a visual guide only. The curvature of the blank is fixed for a given amount of deflection. From that, the vector forces are calculated such that there is only a perpendicular component (to the rod blank) for a given number of guides. This would give us a mathematical model of the static method. On the other hand,

John, It doesn't seem like you are factoring in the effect of the line and guides. You have a model of the blank and a force applied to the tip. From your model you have created an expression that represents the curvature of the blank. However, a line under tension through spaced guides will create force vectors at each guide. The magnitude and direction of these vectors will distort t

Use the Forhan locking wrap and the hook keeper will not pull out. See the Library section above for details. Also consider extending the wrap beyond the hook keeper to protect the blank from the sharp hook points. Finally, be careful with the epoxy. It likes to wick up into the "hinge" when finishing the wraps. Ed

HI Tom, I'm in the process of building three rods on this blank. The first one I finished is what you might expect. It's long so it will cast some distance. It has a fast tip which took some getting use to on a long spinning rod. I went with a rather long grip to make it easier to cast with two hands. It will cast some weight also. I used EVA grips and don't feel that the rod is noti

If the motor is a universal type, the speed can be reduced with a speed controller such as the type used with a router. Places that carry wood working power tools might have these types of speed controllers. However this may not be an ideal set up for a drier. When universal motors are slowed way down, they tend to "cog". That is, the rotation of the motor is not smooth, but jerky.

Manny, I've managed to inject epoxy under a grip. I have needles that are about 1.25 mm ID. They are used in electronics. First you need a clean hole to an area under the grip that is loose. I used a small diameter tube to cut a clean plug that I was able to glue back into place after the repair was done. Inject the epoxy slowly and work the loose grip to spread it around. I put a s

Thanks Tom, My thought was that the metal winding check would give me additional hoop strength, which is sort of what the outer sleeve would give me, except over a wider area.

Hi Everyone, First of all, thanks to everyone for their willingness to share their knowledge and opinions. I've received priceless advice and information from this forum. I'm in the process of repairing my favorite fly rod. It is a high modulus 9 ft 4 piece 4 wt. It broke about one inch below the winding check in the cork grip. The winding check is metal. I've read Ralph O'Qinn's ex

I broke off the top 3 inches of a 6' 6" graphite spinning rod. Using the excellent Ralph O'Quinn rod repair article mentioned below, I was able to make an effective repair. Use a matching thread and you will only notice the change in profile at the site of the repair. I've caught quite a few fish with that rod and it is still going strong. The Ralph O'Quinn rod repair article is wonde

Aaron, If you indeed have a universal motor, (brushes, foot speed control) a switch can be installed to reverse the direction of the motor. However, I would not recommend that you do this unless you are comfortable and qualified to open the motor and rewire it internally. Perhaps you know someone who is. These are hazardous voltage inside these motors. Basically, the motor needs to b

Tim, Sounds like you might have a universal motor. It will run on AC or DC. The speed is varied by adjusting the input voltage. Check for brushes. These types of motors are common in mixers, hand held power tools and sewing machines. There will be a lower limit to the speed that the motor will run. This is a function of the motor's construction. As far as over heating, this will be re

As far as accuracy is concerned, shouldn't cents be added to the total count to represent the gravity deflection of the rod tip? For example. Let's say gravity alone deflects the tip 2 inches. Weight is added to get the tip to deflect to the correct height relative to the butt. Before the ERN is looked up, shouldn't cents be added to the actual weight added to represent the defection due t

Greg, I've built on two of the H&H XT51 blanks. A 7' 6" 4 wt which was fast. (AA=70) and a 9' 6 wt which was moderate (AA=60) I like the banks a lot. The prices are great and Bob's customer service cannot be beat. I just changed the guides on the 7' 6" to Alconites and it is quickly becoming my go to rod. Regards Ed
