Anyone know how to put a reverse switch on the motors you can buy from Mudhole - the wrapping motors - they call their "Electrfication Kit." Re: Reverse switch on motor

I will probably be corrected if I am wrong but I don't think that motor can, AC motors aren't as simple to reverse direction as a DC motor, usually the switching for that kind of motor is in the AC motor itself or has a specific control box. As I said before I'm no electrician so I will probably be corrected by someone who is. Re: Reverse switch on motor

Aaron,If you were to mount the motor facing the other direction it would turn the other way(Pulley pointing away from the rod rather that towards it)if this is possible. Freddwhy (Rapt-Ryte) Re: Reverse switch on motor

I purchased a rod drying motor from mudhole, set up the butt section of a rod to coat various parts with flex coat, turned on the motor switch, and the butt was turning toward me instead of away from me. Just as I was getting ready to set the whole thing up from the other end of the work bench, I decided to spin the rod by hand for some reason and it wouldn't turn while still chucked up to the motor. I turned the switch on again and "viola", the rod is now spinning away from me. Don't ask me how this works but if I want to change the direction of the motor, all I have to do is preload the chuck in the direction I want the rod to turn, flip the motor switch on, and the motor now turns that way. It may work with the motor you have also.....has anyone else noticed this on thier motors? Re: Reverse switch on motor

Bruce: I also have a "bi-directional drying motor", and the instructions that came with it said to gently twist the chuck in the desired direction as you turn the switch on. Have no knowledge of the "innards" of such motors, but not all motors will do this. The drying motor that is part of my Forecast wrapper also has this property, the direction it rotates is sort of random, switch it on and off until it's going the way you want. (The wrapping motor is uni-directional.) Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/11/2005 08:19AM by Tom Doyle. Re: Reverse switch on motor

The picture of this unit on Mudhole's website, shows that this is a typical AC/DC Universal brush type motor and foot pedal. Just like most sewing machine motors. You should be able to reverse the direction of rotation by using a switch between the foot pedal and the motor to reverse (exchange) the two leads going to the motor. Re: Reverse switch on motor

on my pac bay wrapper/drier all i have to do is flick the toggle switch and my drying motor turns the other way
also if i grab the rod by the grip wile turning in the dryer to try to stop it from turning it simply starts turning the other way i bought a dring motor from neals fishing tackle to make a second dryer this motor does the same as i just mentioned Sante Morrone the fisherman Re: Reverse switch on motor

Aaron,
If you indeed have a universal motor, (brushes, foot speed control) a switch can be installed to reverse the direction of the motor. However, I would not recommend that you do this unless you are comfortable and qualified to open the motor and rewire it internally. Perhaps you know someone who is. These are hazardous voltage inside these motors. Basically, the motor needs to be opened and wire connections brought out to a switch. The internal connections between the field windings and the armature need to be broken and the four wires brought out of the motor. By proper wiring of these four wires such that the armature is reversed will cause the motor to reverse direction. Here's a web site with better instructions. w3.uwyo.edu/~metal/motors1.html Remember, there are real hazards in doing this, so be sure you know what you are doing.
