Cork Sealer?
Basically I used the same size sandpaper with the exception of the 600.
I have and old blank I could turn into a reamer. Still has the handle on it so I guess thats a bonus. I have read some of the articles and posts about homemade reamers. I may give it a try.
Thanks for all the input.

The next time I am going to use wax I think.
I was really happy the way it worked. I used scrap wood for the jig and spent $5 at the hardware for the metal rods and hardware. The rest was no special tools at all. Just a drill and sandpaper.
It was longer than 20 - 25 minutes. I was really taking my time and using a caliper to measure a handle I already hand on a similar sized rod. It took

I don't have to ream anything. I did that before I put them on the madrel. I dry fit it last night and it fits well. Being my first one I thought maybe dumb luck got to where I was.
I am pretty pumped about the whle thing. I thougth making the handle might have involved a little more labor.

6. Cork Handle
I am putting together a Cork handle. I fit each piece to the rod by filing each hole individually and then putting a small mark on the outside of the cork, so as to assemble them in the same order.
I tapered the mandrel with masking tape to simulate the rod taper and match that of the inside diameter if the cork. I then coated the masking tape with a thin plastic bag I spiraled up the blank (I

I have done a search on this and cannot find an answer if it is there.
I ended up using NCP thread and CP thread in a chevron wrap I did. Will this cause any problems? I have read posts where people used NCP thread and applied CP to it, but not where NCP and CP thread were used in conjunction. I would think it would not matter too much.
Also, when applying the CP to the chevron. It is an &q

I would recommend Clemens "Advanced Custom Rod Building" it has patterns and discusses setting up the rod axis for various patterns. The "Custom Thread Art" book is basically a book full of patterns, and while I think it has its worth I have got a lot more out of "Advanced Custom Rod Building" being new to the game.
I also think Tom Kirkman's book has a great pho

I have the epoxy in syringes, but that is what they came in. I don't think I could get an accurate measure out of those being full, but maybe I could. What do you buy your epoxy in that facilitates you being able to draw it out with a syringe.
I could use the syringes I have when empty if O could draw the epoxy out of a container. Do they sell it like that?

What is a good rule of thumb for how much epoxy to mix? I thought 5cc total was overkill based the amount I had left. I mixed it in the cups that have the "cc" marks on the side. I guess I can search for that answer.
I am not sure I needed a new batch mixed up, but maybe just mix up more next time. It was workable for as long as I needed.

The tip end of the rod I don't think will need any more. I look at it this morning.
Its mostly the stripper guides. They have big(tall) feet and high wraps. I was wanting to fish with it this weekend even though I have not settled on a butt wrap. It look like that will be no problem.
BTW I ended up applying the epoxy in my basement which a local old timer told me not to do (she has built a

I applied epxoy last night on my guides. I still need to put a butt wrap on I like and have been practicing butt wraps for the last month.
When I put epoxy on my wraps last night the larger guides seem to have an uneven coating because of the guide feet. On the end of the wrpa they are nicely covered, but when it get to the guide foot the epoxy is "thinner" and the thread is noticeab

I don't think a single diamond wrap is all that bad either. This is coming from someone who is doing thier first rod and constantly tearing off the wrap and practicing another.
The set up is similar to the chevron as far as marking goes. Do a center wrap that is the width you want, say 4 threads. this will create an "X" then wraps the sides of it with contrasting color. Once you

I know the amount of Carbon Tetrachloride is very slight, but do you really want to use soemthing like that?
I am not a bark crunching tree hugger or anything, but it seems that it is pretty nasty stuff even in small quantities.
I know Dave Hughes says the used to use parrifin and gasoline back int he day.

Dave when you described the process for applying the epoxy to the outside of the wrap you said:
"This is used to transport and draw a narrow bead of finish along the outer edge of the wrap where it meets the blank."
Do you position the spatula on the thread side of the wrap on the bare balnk side of the wrap to do this?

Can you tape the different guides on and do some test casts with the different guides?
I actually do think a large spool makes a difference when casting a UL spinning reel. I have never used aspool that large though.

I use a business card that has a 1/4" wide strip cut into it. I got this from Garcia's book. I think I saw (can't remeber, but maybe a video) used masking tape -- too much work and also marking the blank with a pencil or something and basically starting the wrap one thread over so as to cover it to -- too much also as far as I am concerned.
I personally like the business card. Its fast

I have a rod that was not black crome, but rather blue. Its about a year and a half old. I would not say it looks terrible so much as it looks used. THe inside of the snake guide finish has worn off. I bet ti would be more noticalbe with black though.
Over all I like the look even after some wear.

Hooked is right.
Laying in bed at night and thinking about it is the least of my problems. I have to start paying attention in meetings at the job. They drone on for a while and I am thinking about the next rod I build and what type of wrap I will do. Then some says "what do you think Joe?". I 'm thinking I might try a more complex wrap next time.

To quote Tom's book:
"Again, the tip-most guide should not be located farther back than 4-5 inches from the tip. In fact, I'd almost go so far as to suggest you put it 4 inches behind the tip and leave it at that." Pg27
