I have a full compliment of wood turning equipment. One of my hobbies it turning bowls. (another addiction!) There are no chucks better than the Oneway chucks in my opinion. The Nova would be a step down. That being said, If you are just going to be turning handles and such, you don't need one of these. A drill chuck (any) do many things. YOu can do this with jam chucks which are nothing more tha

No need to finish antler. A fuper fine sanding will be the most permanent finish you can use on one. There are finishes that will work, but all will wear off. I've made pens out of antler and sanded to 4000 grit and the finish was awesome. I'd say a wet sanding to 1200 will make an acceptable finish for most, but the higher you go, the shinier it gets. As the others stated, sanding stinks to high

I was taught to use a mylar type tape on my guides to get the small area of spiral for trim approximately 1/8" from the end of the guide wrap, but I always thought that looked tacky. I'll use the Team Daiwa LT series rods for an example to those that know them. These rods have what appears to be 2 silver metallic threads approximately 1/8"-3/16" from the outside end of the wrap and

I'm a wood turner. Kiln dried wood will vary depending on where you live. Most kilns take it down to 7 - 8.5%. It would be my recommendation to let it adjust itself to your climate by leaving it in the garage for a little while (week or so) to gain some moisture. This is not to help with the finishing but rather to let adjust a little since it will pick up moisture from fishing. Your comment abou

Ok, I have been investigating these blanks on the Shakari website.

I have stepped down considerably on power for all my rods and I know what you mean by the broom handle bunch. I didn't think I'd run into much of that on a custom buidling site. The shorty is a special application rod. I fish lots of tournaments on Lake of the Ozarks which is loaded with docks. One of the better patterns for fall fishing is topwater along the docks. I have the 6'6" topwater

Ok, the email should be working now.
I found this reel seat that looks like it will make a comfortable trimmed seat. This post was more or less a curiousity issue. It won't be a problem to make a nice one. I just wasn't sure how they would finish up with a little sanding.
The post I am very concerned about is the one about the blanks. I am totally lost on that issue.

Well? I don't want to spend $100 on a reel seat. I guess what I'm asking is there one out there that comes in 2 pieces. The trigger rear support and the front with the screw clamping mechanism. If none are available, can you recommend a good one to do some carving on to get what I want? I'm not sure what the cushioned in your post refers to.

Forgot one thing in my last post. I like the new skeletal designed reel seats with the blank exposed. Is there any places out there or can I take a good Fuji and do some shaping to get what I need and still have a good finish after proper sanding? If they are not good ones available, which reel seats are the good ones for bait casting reels. I'll be building a bulging wood handle split grip desig

Hi all,
I used to enjoy the art of rod making many years back. I have since got out of it but the desire has set in to build myself some customs. I could use some help in making choices in good blanks, but don't have a local shop that caters to rod builders to help me out. I'll have to order over the internet. I do not have to have the best, but would like a very good quality light rod. I'll
