I was looking into shrinking "Winn grip" or a "X wrap" shrink tube over existing cork grip. Cork is in good shape but is rather small in diameter. A shrink wrap might be enough to fix diameter issue without removing reel seat and replacing cork handle. But, I read water can penetrate behind shrink material. If that is the case, water would never evaporate. Couldn't trappe

Anyone familiar with T.L. Johnson SLS, fast action, Saltwater rod blank? One color offered.....Copper. Only information found so far online: "SL . A fast action rod delivering improved control and accuracy. SL rods are very light and performance-driven for those who demand a powerful fast action rod. Beautifully built with nickel silver reel seat or all-aluminum reel seat on heavier

Looking at reel seats with wood inserts to fit a Fiberglass rod blank having butt diameter of. 0.471. All wood inserts I have looked at (over 30) have a inside tube diameter between .312 and .380. Is it common to bore a wood insert to a limited larger size? Whey are wood insert inside diameter so small? Outside diameter of wood insert is generally .620 to .640.

Is there any side to side slop of reel foot when snugged onto reel seat of rod? Like when tightening down a reel onto a hidden hooded or any tube style reel seat? I don't like that once a reel seems locked tight. Right and Left movement of the reel results in further setting and tightening of threaded tightening nut, until finally the reel cannot be moved on reel seat. A graphite tube style, with

I "always" keep the mixing cup that is normally dispensed after using 2 part finish that was mixed in it. Reason is to check bottom and sides of cup for proper mixing, and hardening of all finish. I don't want to find any tacky material after sufficient dry time. If any material is tacky in mixing cup, I expect to find a problem with one or more thread wraps. There was one time that

Will new era Channel lock reel seats accommodate older reel feet? Or, is it common for the need to grind a reel foot depending on reel brand? Examples of older reels: Pflueger 1595RC, Lamson 1.5 and 2, SA 6/7L, SA System2 8/9? Is there a downside to having a channel lock reel seat on a 6wt rod used primarily for Saltwater use? Would the rear hood of a Channel lock reel seat self center due to

Is there a downside to using channel lock reel seat on a 9' 6 weight fly rod? For example: Older fly reel feet being to big for a newer model channel lock reel seat? Older reels such as Lamson LP 1.5 or 2, SA system2 8/9, SA "L" series 6/7, or Pflueger 1595rc?

When installing a channel lock reel seat, using tape to build up rod blank for proper reel seat fit before gluing, does a "channel need to be cut in round tape build up for a Channel lock reel seat to slide over tape? Or, is tape build up same as if using a reel seat with round tube?

Blue Halo rod blanks appear, in pictures to allow light to pass through them. I did notice both Charcoal, and Cappuccino were subdued colors compared to other colors. Raw seemed to have good light penetration too. is it safe to say the lack of responses translates to Blue Halo rods not being that popular on rodbuilding.org? A search produces nodda!

What quantifies as a "well stabilized wood insert"? lI have scene a filler tube that is installed under a reel seat, is it common for a rod builder to use one? Can a wood insert be easily refinished while on the rod? I do a fair bit of Salt Water beach fishing, Using a rod with wood insert is not recommended. Sage, Loomis, Echo, Redington, are just a few manufacturers offering Salt

Was it mentioned: how many epoxy wraps have a dried lump? Instead of cutting off lump and having a flat spot to shape with sandpaper, consider sanding lump off. Sanding will give you total control of shaping that spot to existing contour, takes very little effort to remove. Area will have a matte finish from sanding, but after recoat that area totally disappears, will not show! I have sanded 2

A search for past threads comes up empty. I would like to know if BH is worth there purchase price? I have a Cabelas CGR 4/5wt 3pc in 7'. Would there be a noticeable difference between rods when casting? I think the BH 5wt is offered in 8' only. Blue Halo is like having a light saber in your hand, is this distracting when in use?

Tom Kirkman, I had wondered how single foot and double foot guides effected action of fly blank. I have read that double foot guides do stiffen rod blank, but I wondered if combined weight of epoxy, thread, and eyelet overcame rod blank stiffening in the 1" rod blank area a double foot guide would occupy. Another point not mentioned is weight created by each ferrule? Sure, 4pcs rods are

Motor is a variable speed.........interesting. Flexcoat "high build", isn't that thick? Thin coat was suggested 20 years ago when I first started dinking around with rod guides, repairs.......ect. Doesn't high build allow for one coat vs two thin coat applications? I would think the combination of high build viscosity and amount applied would be the problem. While dryer was spinning,

I have seen reel seat with wood inserts for $30 - $40. As a base price for graphite or all aluminum reel seat: Woven IM6 graphite insert, ported hood, with all aluminum anodized hardware for 13.50 shipped. All aluminum batson, ported reel seat is $18.00 shipped. I would surmise that a wood insert would not be a good choice for durability in any long term wet environment. Refinishing a wood i

I noticed non of previous posts mentioned rod turning speed, could that be a factor? Also, could rod be slipping as it turns? It seems to me that if the rod is tight in the chuck, spinning at one continuous speed while applying finish, and is level. If finish is applied to thick, or is too viscous, a puddle of epoxy would appear, first as a very slight sag. If, more epoxy is applied, that s

Ooooooh, what have we here? This could be the cats meow right here. So, no problem passing cork borer over rod blank? What length ported reel seats were available during your search? What reel seat was used as replacement to damaged seat? I don't see a measurement for inside of bore tool that passes over rod blank, could you provide that I.D measurement? No picture of actual cuttin

Donald A, I was wrong about cork handle type........a full wells is on the rod. Phil E, it seems from pictures of 5 and 6 weight fly rods that 6 weights are more likely to have a fighting butt than a 5. It could be that a 6 weight with fighting butt has Salt water components? Rod I am considering a reel seat swap, and possible fighting butt add on does have 2 stainless with ring inserts strip

Roger, I did think of that. But before going to town on existing cork handle, which this rod and components are 25 years old, but in new condition. I don't mind the cigar shaped cork handle, and cork is in excellent shape. Rather, if little cork needed removal to complete task, that is what I would like to shoot for. If cork was of bad quality or damaged I would remove handle. I am consideri

Basically, there is a 4" reel seat butted to cork handle on existing rod. If I were to remove that reel seat there would be 4" of exposed rod blank to work with, not including porting. If wanting to add a ported reel seat and fixed fighting butt: 1) How would I hollow existing cork to properly fit a "ported ring" with 4" of rod blank protruding from center of handle?

Presently, I have a older 6wt 9ft moderate fast graphite fly rod, with lifetime warranty that I like how it casts. That rod came with a exposed hood, graphite, up locking real seat. I am entertaining the thought of removing that stock reel seat, replacing with a hidden hood reel seat. A hidden just looks better. What I have seen for hooded reel seats length options are 3.5" and 4".
