I have been invited to go fishing with two friends in Key West Florida. I thought I would make each of them a saltwater spinning rod. I am considering either a St.Croix 2S70HF2 blank or a Mud-Hole L904-2 MHX blank. I have always been happy with St.Croix but know that the only way a person can get an MHX rod is for someone to make it for them. I just don't know about taking a chance with a MHX bla

Jay: Thanks for the link to Klass Coat. I saw your reply and almost missed clinking on the link. I was impressed seeing the satin finish used on a feather butt wrap. I will have to give it a try. It might be just what I'm looking for the reduce the glare and see more detail of ones thread work.

Roger: Thanks for the idea about using baking soda. I will do some experimenting and see what happens. I contacted the folks at Flex Coat and they spoke very highly of you and said you were a great resource to them and to try what ever you suggested. I will let you know if I am able to achieve a non glare finish. Thanks again.

Is there is a epoxy finish that provides a non gloss finish? When I look at the beautiful Highlander butt wraps you can see every thread without any glare. I just completed several diamond wraps and when I photographed them prior to applying the epoxy finish I could see every individual thread. After applying the epoxy finish it was impossible to photograph them without a glare and they lost som

I agree with Tom. I don't think you could feel the difference with or without a sleeve but if the client wants direct contact with the blank that's what you provide. Thanks for your comments.

Thanks for the excellent instructions on how to install carbon sleeves in the new fuji reel seats. My question is: Does installing the sleeve take away some of the sensitive feeling you get when your finger can actually touch the blank though the window of the reel seat? I have had clients that did not want a sleeve.

A word of caution about decals. Many do not stay on the blank when applying the epoxy finish. I have had to remove the decal provided by some manufacturers while the epoxy was still wet. The best decals come with all St.Croix rods. I have never had a problem with the St.Croix decals

I was interested in Barry Chapmans reply regarding the thread he uses. I still have a few spools of Gudebrod thread left and every time I use one I wish they had not go out of business. The weave of their thread is much better than anything I have found to date. Is the Maderia thread similar to Gudebrod and where do you get it? I also agree with the replies that the thread should should not b

It was definitely Mud Hole. No question about it. I clearly remember getting a notice to that effect from both Merrick Tackle who I did business with and Mud Hole.

Tom: I was able to upload two pictures of the catfish rod and they are in the guide thread section. The orange is actually much brighter than the pictures show. I couldn't believe how thrilled the client was. In fact his wife give me a huge plate of cookies for Christmas. She makes cookies as a hobby and they were fantastic. You never know some of the rewards you get making fishing rods. H

Tom: I just finished the catfish rod and will try to post some pictures. It really turned out nice and the client can't wait to give it to his son for Christmas. I ended up using dark blue thread trimmed in bright orange. Being a graduate of Syracuse University I like the color combination. Bill

Chris: Glad to hear you are keen to give it a go. Check out the latest RodMaker magazine and you will find an article called the HGS User Guide. Once you are set up to take slope measurements you have done the hard part. SInce writing the article I have concluded that you do not need to put on any temporary guides. Just stress the rod from the tip guide. Also to find the correct weigh you could a

Just noticed some of the comments regarding the new spreadsheet in the Library. Thank you Tom Kirkland for your support. Yes, it is not that difficult to use and it gives the rod builder confidence as to where the guides should be placed on the blank for optimum performance. Using the guide spacing from published tables is certainly easier but as a custom rod builder I wanted to be more exact. I

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. It gave me some good choices since I didn't know the first thing about making a catfish rod. I think the MB844-W-MHX fits the bill for the size catfish he is likely to catch. I decided on the H rather then the MH since he may hook into a big carp where he will be fishing. Each year they have a 3 day carp contest in the Seneca River and catch some real mons

Thanks for the input. That gives me some options to discuss with the buyer. I asked him if he wants a spinning rod or casting rod and am waiting for his answer.

A friend has asked me to make a catfish Rod. He will be fishing the Senaca River near Syracuse NY so I can't image the catfish would be over 10 pounds. Any suggestion on a blank to use. I was thinking about getting a 7 foot MH fast MHX white blank.

I have tried several times to upload a picture of a recent guide wrap that I thought may be of interest. I don't seem to be able to get anything to work.
