Someone had too much time on their hands! Guide placement and sizing just isn't that complicated. Nice graphs though! Re: final rod guide spreadsheet

It's the instructions for a system outlined in RodMaker in the last issue by William Hall. It's not at all complicated. You plug in a few numbers, and it spits out your spacings.

use the KISS way of doing it
get a spacing chart from most any manufacturer Put the guides on and then STATIC test the rod Size the guides Butt guide to size of the spool face Casting Depending on the flex of the blank so the line does not hit your hand under pressure Why do people make things SO COMPLICATED O yea -- Test cast and try different guide sizes Bill - willierods.com Re: final rod guide spreadsheet

Just noticed some of the comments regarding the new spreadsheet in the Library. Thank you Tom Kirkland for your support. Yes, it is not that difficult to use and it gives the rod builder confidence as to where the guides should be placed on the blank for optimum performance. Using the guide spacing from published tables is certainly easier but as a custom rod builder I wanted to be more exact. I just tested 2 different blanks yesterday and it only took 15 minutes each. Once I entered the data In the spreadsheet I could then quickly evaluate the spacing for 6,7,or 8 guides. To make the testing easier I agree with Tom Kirkland to flex the rod with only the tip guide to get a true curvature of the blank. So no need to put temporary guides on the blank prior to testing. It would be interesting to compare guide spacing results for identical spinning rod blanks using the static guide and HGS method. My bet is they will be very similar and will provide the customer with a truly custom made rod. Re: final rod guide spreadsheet

Chris: Glad to hear you are keen to give it a go. Check out the latest RodMaker magazine and you will find an article called the HGS User Guide. Once you are set up to take slope measurements you have done the hard part. SInce writing the article I have concluded that you do not need to put on any temporary guides. Just stress the rod from the tip guide. Also to find the correct weigh you could also use a container of coins rather than water. Finally don't let the Excel Spreadsheet intimidate you since all you use is the first page as shown in page 28 of RodMaker. Tom Kirkland is going to update the Library soon so all you see is page one. Good luck. Sorry, only registered users may post in this forum.
